Something you loved years ago, but looking back, it's shit

I loved a kids' series in 1984 called The Box of Delights. I remember it being a magical Christmassy adventure. I got the DVD and tried to watch it at the weekend. Considering it was aimed at kids, it was unintelligible and unwatchable.

I also felt the same about The Goodies. Laughed myself silly at them when I was a kid. Watched a rare repeat and didn't laugh once - utter, utter rubbish.

What are yours?

I love the Box of Delights! Was actually too young for it the first time round but now I watch it every year. Weirdly the animation style special effects seem to have aged much better than the more 'advanced' effects on the BBC Narnias which followed it.

PlantyPotts · 15/12/2021 21:46

Sex and the City. I know it's de rigeur again now thanks to the reboot but it's hasn't aged well. I bloody adored it when it was out originally but when trying to rewatch it's just so shallow and cringey.

IgneousRock · 15/12/2021 21:48

The Cosby Show Shock

EventOfTheSeason · 15/12/2021 21:50

I didn't watch it but I was jealous of my friend who got to watch Noel's House Party 🤦

3luckystars · 15/12/2021 21:50

@PlantyPotts you are right.

Cuck00soup · 15/12/2021 21:50

Rentaghost. I cried with laughter back in the 70's and genuinely thought it was the funniest ever show.

Got the DVD to show DC a few years back and it is complete shite. So disappointed.

Lifewith · 15/12/2021 21:53

I still really like Ab Fab.
Fawlty Towers Shock it's really not funny

jay55 · 15/12/2021 21:53

Chocky, watched it all on dvd a few years ago and it was just awful.

PiddleOfPuppies · 15/12/2021 21:53

A lot of the late 80s / early 90s comedies, particularly After Henry, Birds of a Feather and Second Thoughts. Seemed funny at the time, now it's just women shouting or being exasperated all the time with the same catchphrases running through each episode.

Lifewith · 15/12/2021 21:54

And I was a massive fan of friends. Massive! And even until recently. But it isn't ageing well now. There's something about jt

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 15/12/2021 21:56

I loved Box of Delights! I might have a rewatch.

Did anyone ever watch The Stotyteller? John Hurt was captivating in that when I was a kid.

Notconfident · 15/12/2021 21:56

Spice Girls Grin

Hockeyboysmum · 15/12/2021 22:04

I used to love robin hood prince of theives too. Remember watching it every day for a few weeks. Watched it a few months ago and it was dire

CaptainThe95thRifles · 15/12/2021 22:06

The Box of Delights was, and shall ever be, awesome. I can understand finding the effects dated, but I'm not sure how it's unintelligible, unless you really weren't paying attention.

Friends, on the other hand, is the biggest pile of crap going.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/12/2021 22:17

Another mention for Rentaghost. Looking back, it was SO bad. And on the same theme, Mulberry. Blandest sitcom ever. I liked it.

Shang-a-lang. Cringe!

onemouseplace · 15/12/2021 22:33

To be fair, I thought Rentaghost was pretty bad at the time!

Politics4me · 15/12/2021 22:36

Lovejoy has not aged well, not sure why.
Big disappointment recently for me was MASH. Some of it was edgy, Klinger in his dresses, no one else did that at the time.

Ubiquery · 15/12/2021 22:37

Buffy Sad

I wasn’t a big fan of Friends but it was at least watchable before.

Early episodes of The West Wing are tough too.

Stiffcondomhat · 15/12/2021 22:40

I used to love the movie Clerks in my teenage years. Caught a bit of it recently on late. You definitely need to be high to watch it Grin

SkylarFerris · 15/12/2021 22:41

Not TV but a film
Rocky Horror Picture Show

The original moomins that looked more like and sounded more like ghosts

The Wombles

RaraRachael · 15/12/2021 22:44

I watched the first episode of Box of Delights but it just seemed so disjointed and none of it made sense to me so I couldn't think how it would appeal to kids - not any I know anyway.

Gossip Girl

WreathSupreme · 15/12/2021 22:58

Not tv, but I was obsessed with Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas. I wanted to watch it every day. I wouldn’t have blamed my mother if she stamped on the damn video 😂

Theunamedcat · 15/12/2021 23:03

Have you ever read the box of delights BOOK

CrispAndFrosty · 15/12/2021 23:03

Titanic. Seemed absolutely epic at the cinema as a young'un. Seemed utterly risible on the TV as an adult.

Not seen the Box of Delights but, OP, your post seems a bit contradictory... You loved it as a child but now you don't think it would appeal to children? Your experience would suggest that it was perfect for children and not great for adults! I'm curious to watch it now, having loved the books...
