Just finished episode one and need to talk about it!!!

Didn't like much of the episode to be honest. But the ending! I'm floored! Was not expecting that.

Just been sobbing watching it.

Loved seeing how happy Carrie and Big were after all of the ups and downs. Though it seemed obvious that they're planning to incorporate the bloke behind the screen-producer?-from the podcast into Carrie's love life and I sa a annoyed when it looked like they were going to get her cheating on Big.

Digs at Kim Catrall in episode one we're a bit uncomfortable. Pulled it back a bit in episode 2 but no way would Samantha not have been at that funeral!

Charlotte's face. Why has she done that to her upper lip?

Sad that they made Miranda like that and that they're setting her up for alcoholism. Seem to also be paving the way for her being bisexual?

letstryagainnow · 09/12/2021 22:53

Think I'd have been happier if it had been a little catch up series with them all living the lives we wanted for them and maybe Sam providing the things to dissect over cocktails and brunch!

frogswimming · 09/12/2021 23:03

What a pile of shite.

Discussion on Samantha was bitter and made them look bad. She would definitely have gone to the funeral, unless it was covid and they should have said that then.

Miranda would not be like that. She's a lawyer working in Manhattan. If that's how she acts in her job she'd have lost it. It was like she had never spoken to a black person or a non binary person in her life or thought about what she would say if she did. Even though she lives in New York and interacts with all sorts of people every day. She would be confident and have proper formed opinions about sex, gender and colour already.

Charlotte might have been bossy about the piano lessons but I don't think she would have been about the dress or Miranda's hair. She was never unkind about peoples appearances close to her and respected their opinions.

I like new Samantha replacement lady. She's confident and sassy like they all should be.

Carrie would not be grovelling around someone else's weird masturbation podcast. She'd be in charge of her own successful one. I don't think laughing about masturbating in public places is funny. It's offensive and criminal, it's a sex offence like flashing. Sex offenders start with that then move onto assaulting people. Like that policeman who murdered Sarah everard.

All in all it made out that mid life women are blundering idiots incapable of functioning properly in the modern world. And it wasn't warm, charming or witty as pp said. Except for the bits with big and now he's dead.

Bigs death was very well done and I loved carries hair and outfits.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/12/2021 23:06

I thought the masturbating in public discussion was VERY weird Confused

DaisyNGO · 09/12/2021 23:12

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

I thought the masturbating in public discussion was VERY weird Confused
Isn't that the point though? They talked about sex in a way that made people uncomfortable - peeing on the politician etc - and now they're in a world where that age group talks about sex in a way that makes them uncomfortable?

And the masturbation talk goes alongside Brady also saying "don't sex shame me" when he was making out with his girlfriend at the concert? Such a good portrayal of where we are now.

Fuuuuuckit · 09/12/2021 23:19

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. I'm in bits.

Doesn't help I'm going to a funeral tomorrow and the fella is similarly big charactered.

But fuck. Big. Fuck.

frogswimming · 09/12/2021 23:25

Just because some of the younger generation are so 'sex positive' doesn't mean they are right. Talking about masturbating in public is fine, actually doing it is wrong. Making out in the audience is just rude to the surrounding people and the performers. And actually, Carrie and Miranda made an old man feel uncomfortable using the gents. There's just a nasty undercurrent to this new series. I hope all of that is tongue in cheek but I'm not convinced.

frogswimming · 09/12/2021 23:27

They never talked about peeing on politicians in an aspirational way, as if it was a good thing to be doing.

PumpkinCrumble · 09/12/2021 23:32

I really thought Miranda walking into a bar named Smith’s was going to go somewhere…somewhere with Smith and Samantha….alas not.

I can buy Miranda being a functioning alcoholic, I mean the brunches were always boozy and SATC was basically responsible for the cocktail trend of the whole naughties, but more in a downing two bottle of wine with Steve in an evening, rather than drinking before the day starts.

I think they are going to mirror Cynthia Nixon’s real life, with Miranda coming out as at least bisexual….is this the reason for the drinking though?

No idea how this links to Steve going deaf.

Gilda152 · 09/12/2021 23:48

I guess Steve is either a bit deaf IRL or it's linked to him working in bars for years?

EachandEveryone · 09/12/2021 23:56

Wasnt that Mirandas realife daughter now son in the college group at the beginning? The one who said thats the professors seat? I think it was. I take it Cynthia Nixon had some say in what was happening as she is in touch with all the pc crowd these days.

I think they've left it open for KC to return.

How hard must it have been for Stanford filming Big dying knowing it would be his funeral next?😒

PumpkinCrumble · 10/12/2021 00:21

Also, I didn’t watch the second film and it’s been awhile since I’ve watched SATC but did we ever know Big’s name was John before? Or his last name? I found it heartbreaking when Carrie shouted “John” !

PumpkinCrumble · 10/12/2021 00:27

Ignore me! I’ve just re-read about basically the ending of the series! Grin

ChimpyChops · 10/12/2021 00:28

Pumpkin, yes, in the last episode of the series. His name comes up on her phone.

TedImgoingmad · 10/12/2021 00:33

You find out Big's first name, John, in the very last episode of the original series - his name flashes up on Carrie's mobile in the final scene. The rest of his name is filled in in the first movie.

TedImgoingmad · 10/12/2021 00:34

X-post!

HangingOver · 10/12/2021 00:39

Yeah Willie Garson, consummate professional. That funeral must have been surreal and terrifying for him, all of them really.

HangingOver · 10/12/2021 00:48

What's wrong with Steve being deaf? You don't have to be ninety to have progressive hearing loss, there's lots of us!

DaisyNGO · 10/12/2021 01:36

It's funny how we interpret this

I'd say that the whole thing with Brady and Louisa making out in the audience is that it IS wrong, that the show is pointing out the problems with current attitudes.

I'd say shock jocks talking about that on the radio is actually wrong as well because the way they did it made it sound like it's okay.

And I think Miranda going in the gents and making an man feel uncomfortable is a deliberate comment on the issues around all that.

The "nasty undercurrent" is what we have in society now and I think they're just trying to shine a light on it.

Xyzzzzz · 10/12/2021 02:17

I wasn’t shocked re Big I’m sad though.

user1481840227 · 10/12/2021 03:40

@chiefcha

I think they're trying really hard to make up for the 2nd film.

Does anybody else think they're gearing up for miranda to question her sexuality and come out as bisexual?

Yep, I thought Che seemed really into Miranda!
user1481840227 · 10/12/2021 03:48

I agree about the Samantha conversation, but it would be silly to say in the show that she would come back for the funeral if it wasn't for covid...because then there would be an assumption that Samantha is definitely going to show up at some point (next season for example).

Netaporter · 10/12/2021 04:45

I don’t think I’ve ever cried as much during a Tv show (other than most episodes of This is Us 😂) at the ending of Ep1..

Things I liked..
Carries clothes. Obvs. Although I remember the wedding shoes as blue not purple (they looked purple to me in this ep). The fact that they’d kept the apartment as per the movie. Carrie’s closet 😍 Brady looking like the kid who played him in the film. The fact that the new dog is called Richard Burton 😂 Scenes with Big that did not involve wanking. The accuracy of men being obsessed with their Peloton (speaking from experience here 😂). Lily smashing it in the recital. The thinly veiled salty digs at Kim Cattral. The reaction of the funeral parlour employee when Carrie leaves. The fact you can rent a casket in NYC if you are opting for a cremation (genius). Stanford and Anthony. General subtle nods to the series/films for the fans.

Things I didn’t like…
Why on earth there had to be ‘a look’ for the funeral Confused. The general tone of the funeral. Carrie’s speech at the funeral (surely she’d have used something from ‘Love letters from great men’? 😉 The in-your-face wokeness. The podcast content (WTAF). Big wanking (brain bleach required- up there with the cringe SATC 2 film scenes with Samantha that get them thrown out of Abu Dhabi). Miranda’s wardrobe - just when you though it couldn’t get any worse, it did. Miranda suddenly becoming out of touch with everything despite having been a shithot lawyer. Harry looking like a twat on a skateboard. The setting up for Miranda to be a drunk. Charlotte’s facial work (she’s such a beautiful woman, no idea why she’d do that).

Obviously I’ve not thought about it at all since watching 😂😂😂

BarkminsterBlue · 10/12/2021 06:40

Was there a subtext to Carrie’s comment about Gloria? It felt like we were supposed to pick up on something but she’s never been seen or mentioned before. I thought she was Steve’s mother at first.

Lottapianos · 10/12/2021 06:48

'Although I remember the wedding shoes as blue not purple (they looked purple to me in this ep)'

Yes, I noticed that too. The wedding shoes were defo royal blue

I agree that Big's death was very well done, and really shocking. Im absolutely not feeling the heartbreak though. I'm with Susan Sharon - 'am I the only one who remembers what a prick he was to her?!'
