@Newgirls

I do stretch out on my bed and think great I’m not on a submarine bunk
Or a torpedo tube.

Newgirls · 22/09/2021 12:00

Aghhh yes!

Shrinepod do a good job of unpacking a lot of storylines this week. I forgot about 90% of them. I'm trying not to get invested with them all after Line of Duty.

@Ekofisk

I thought the same thing about Inglis / Ingles spelling.

Inglis is a Scottish surname, Ingles is English.

Surely it’s one of these things that evolves over time when people spell names wrong, like McDonald/MacDonald? My mum and her siblings are a mix of mc/Mac because my dgf kept forgetting the spelling when he went to the registry office.
Piggywaspushed · 22/09/2021 17:18

Need to double check but I don't think the writer is Scottish. I assumed subtitler had spelling wrong until a character spelt it out.

Piggywaspushed · 22/09/2021 17:26

Yeah, it's Tom Edge who has written for Cormoran Strike and The Crown. Not Scottish.

I don't want to get into the bunfight but I do wonder why that surname , which to any Scottish viewer sounds so specifically Scottish and then is not spelt in the Scottish way but hey ho. Casting comes afterwards so the doctor's name doesn't match the actress's name or ethnicity either.

hairybakers · 22/09/2021 17:41

Was she bumped off or just careless in handling?

I assumed cook committed suicide with a big sniff of the nerve agent. Didn't she say something like "tell blah blah I can't do it" or something?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 22/09/2021 18:57

I know people of different ethnicities having names that don't 'match their ethnicity' iykwim.
The back story of the character Tiffany Docherty, she reasonably could have an Irish paternal ancestor who happened to marry & have children with an Indian woman. Their children married other Indian people & so on.
I know & have worked with people of Indian ethnicity with Portuguese/Spanish surnames e.g. Fernandes, Olivera, Cruz etc as a paternal white sailor ancestor travelled to Goa, India c 1500/1600 & married & had children with a Indian woman.

Piggywaspushed · 22/09/2021 19:14

Yes, agreed , but the actress herself has an Indian name. It doesn't matter one jot really. But screenplays, interestingly, are still rarely written with eg Indian names, unless it's a specific aspect of plot.

Maybe, but Inglis is still the traditional Scots surname whereas Ingles isn’t.

Palmtree · 22/09/2021 21:03

At the risk of way over thinking this....there is an officer of (possibly) Chinese descent on board....or is that just another Way Too Obvious red herring?

VIGIL - thread 2
TheUnexpectedPickle · 22/09/2021 21:24

@Palmtree oh yes!! Been lurking about and was there for the drill but not named... hmmm.

Just though as well, we know the coxswain said he went to look for Jackie when he heard the summons announcement, but he didn't actually say why. Possibly because he is responsible for the crew so wanted to be with her- but why not meet her at the control room if he knows that's where she'll be heading? Could be nothing, especially as he new seems to have redeemed himself but still, seems like a question Amy should have asked.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 22/09/2021 21:24

Just a thought *

Not just though 🙄

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 23/09/2021 21:26

@GlacindaTheTroll
”Yes, just like Shivon can be a first name. It would still be grating in a series set in the very country where the traditional established spelling originated. Pandering to the English, I tell you!! grin“

Hardly, seeing as the character that you’re so mortally offended that I correctly named was Russian but disguised as English. And much of the rest of the cast are also English.

GlacindaTheTroll · 23/09/2021 21:40

I'm not 'mortally offended' FFS!!

I am mildly surprised at a mildly jarring note, Nad teasing about pandering to the English

(And I would have expected a GRU officer to choose the traditional Scottish spelling for a persona to be deployed in Scotland, because they wouldn't want to stand out)

And I clearly should have festooned my posts with more Grin and !!!!!!!!!!!

ScienceSensibility · 24/09/2021 01:56

I’m enjoying the story, but I can’t cope with the wobbly camerawork, and the seasick inducing submarine churning motions.
I have to look away, which means I keep missing parts of the action.

I do wish Directors would get over this shaky camerawork /quasi realism schtick, I don’t think it adds anything to the telling of the story.

Don’t get me started on soaring drone camerawork just to ‘set the scene’. 😡

Oh God! Me too. DH and I comment on it every single time.
It's meant to be cool and edgy, but it's so annoying.

iklboo · 24/09/2021 11:01

S'ok @GlacindaTheTroll - I knew you were having fun about the name. You weren't exactly 'the hill on which I will die'. Plus it was interesting about the etymology of the name.

Reading a review earlier that said Silva must be the only woman to have developed Post Traumatic Lesbian Disorder Grin. I must admit, I'm kind of at a loss why that part of the storyline was needed.

Stiff drink needed for the finale. I've changed my mind about the plot. Silva actually died in the crash and this whole series is her death dream. Let's face it, it would make more sense!

Piggywaspushed · 24/09/2021 11:16

soaring drone camerawork just to ‘set the scene’.

Cheap these days, innit? Sooooo annoying!

Gilmorehill · 24/09/2021 14:04

How on earth was he able to get Silva into the torpedo tube single handedly?

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/09/2021 14:07

Apparently, Patterson Joseph said in an interview that the only member of the cast who knew 'whodunnit' before the end was the perpetrator themself. Like a Murder Mystery dinner party.

HenriettaBadger · 24/09/2021 21:52

Ooh interesting Captain. Is he trying to deflect suspicion from the captain though? It's hard to trust any of 'em!
