Marking place and enjoying the theories. It is a good point about Burke’s death and the motivation of an enemy country.

Things I’d never come up with on my own!

This is why I like to read these threads then pretend to DH I thought of it Grin

Didn’t the messages between Ingles & someone else (the fishy ones with hidden text about the sub’s mechanics) stop just before Vigil originally set off? So an original crew member is also a Russian/Russian asset?

GlacindaTheTroll · 21/09/2021 20:55

I think it could well be an original crew member.

Though the cook could have been ordered to murder Burke via family message. Or perhaps her role was simply to bring the advanced Russian nerve agent on board and keep it hidden in a larder. And someone else on board was the murderer.

Was she bumped off or just careless in handling?

This really, and rather irrationally, annoyed me

It should be spelled Inglis!

iklboo · 21/09/2021 20:59

It should be spelled Inglis!

Why is that? Genuine question, not being snotty!

GlacindaTheTroll · 21/09/2021 21:08

Because it just is

It's one of those names that isn't spelled as pronounced, and as it's from a Scottish word meaning 'English' it's just wrong to anglicise the spelling to match how it's said

(It's like having a character in a show in Ireland called Siobhan, and then saying it's spelled s-h-I-v-o-n)

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 21/09/2021 21:11

WTF @GlacindaTheTroll Hmm.

Not according to iPlayer subtitles it shouldn’t.

Palavah · 21/09/2021 21:15

You mean the famously comprehensive, accurate, infallible iplayer subtitles?

GlacindaTheTroll · 21/09/2021 21:15

Yes, I know what they said in the show, taking a very normal Scottish surname and giving it a yoonike spelling

Just another of the many 'wrong' things to ignore as we suspend disbelief Grin

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 21/09/2021 21:24

Saying my post annoyed you because you don’t like the spelling of a surname has - rationally - pissed me off.

Btw, Ingles is an actual surname of real people, and is also the spelling in the cast list.

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 21/09/2021 21:26

And the cast list then. FFS.
MrsFin · 21/09/2021 21:31

I used to work with a Mark Ingles.

Ekofisk · 21/09/2021 21:35

I thought the same thing about Inglis / Ingles spelling.

Inglis is a Scottish surname, Ingles is English.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/09/2021 22:04

To be fair, the Russian dude was effecting an English accent so maybe that's why it was the English spelling?

I learned on the real life submarine documentary that crew members share a bunk so all the bunk searching doesn't fit (unless Vigil has extra space as a bigger boat. Although presumably bigger boat = bigger crew so who knows!)

Ekofisk · 21/09/2021 22:28

The Trident subs are big enough so that the crew doesn’t have to hot bunk according to this website:

www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-latest-activity/features/protectors-of-peace

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/09/2021 22:43

@Ekofisk ah ok, I'll let them off that one then!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 21/09/2021 22:55

The thought of sleeping in those sub bunk beds gives me the shivers!
I can't even sleep on the bottom bunk of a normal bunk bed without feeling extremely trapped.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 21/09/2021 23:24

@TracyBeakerSoYeah I know- like a coffin 😬

thaegumathteth · 22/09/2021 00:33

Ingles is a surname ......

GlacindaTheTroll · 22/09/2021 06:26

@thaegumathteth

Ingles is a surname ......
Yes, just like Shivon can be a first name. It would still be grating in a series set in the very country where the traditional established spelling originated.

Pandering to the English, I tell you!! Grin

They hot bunk on Trenchart. They covered that in the documentary last week when it was on (worth a watch if you’ve not seen it). They have 3 bunks high which gave me the shivers and have rest periods of 6 hours on, 6 off from what I remember.

Newgirls · 22/09/2021 08:05

Good point Gazelda about a big red button

Let’s hope they don’t need to fire at the Russian/Chinese maybe American sub

Newgirls · 22/09/2021 08:06

I do stretch out on my bed and think great I’m not on a submarine bunk

Ekofisk · 22/09/2021 08:37

@escapeyou

Trenchant, whilst nuclear powered, isn’t a Trident sub - it’s much smaller (85.4m x 9.8m) compared to say Vigilant (149.9m x 12.8m). Both classes of sub have similar sized crews (130 for Trenchant and 135 for Vigilant) though - so much more space available on the Trident subs to accommodate the crew without hot bunking.
