@TedGlenn

Was Poppy her daughter or her step-daughter?
Step daughter but a completely irrelevant sub plot really wasn't it?
TedGlenn · 27/09/2021 07:48

Thanks - it was the final "Mummy!" that confused me, when on all other occasions she had called her "Amy"

She called her Mummy when they were getting out of the car in the accident as well, which confused me over whether she was her mum or stepmum.
Dillyjones72 · 27/09/2021 08:55

We’ll, after all that trauma I’m glad Amy gets her girl back and a shot at a happy family life! God knows she’ll be in therapy one way or another for years anyway…

‘ Thanks - it was the final "Mummy!" that confused me, when on all other occasions she had called her "Amy"’

She’d called her both, and the grandparents had said the wee girl was depressed and thought they’d take her ‘mummy’ away. They were about to get married, Amy and the dad, pre-crash weren’t they?

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 27/09/2021 09:00

Certainly was!

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 27/09/2021 09:06

I’m a bit confused about why the cook opened the nerve gas container.

In the MI5 interview, they said she opened it because she didn’t trust Doward & wanted to protect the crew. So why open the bloody thing then?? Presumably she didn’t know it was gas, but surely NOT opening something you’re not sure of makes more sense Confused

Dillyjones72 · 27/09/2021 09:06

‘ Step daughter but a completely irrelevant sub plot really wasn't it?’

Wasn’t that whole back story around why being in the sub was even more claustrophobic for her? And showed she had a streak of toughness/heroism in her by saving a child from drowning?
I suppose they could have had her so insular/depressed/anxious from just to day life it it wouldn’t have been quite as interesting.
Or it could have been an ex- boyfriend helping her out onshore - but that would have been a bit more run of the mill too. Having her with a woman added another element, with the pressure of being in the closet on top of everything else…

FreezerBird · 27/09/2021 09:30

Did any one else think Doward was going to drop himself into the sea at the end? Given that we were told in episode one that if you raise your arms you'll slide out of the harness I thought they'd given him a very convenient 'out'. He could have done it even in handcuffs.

EsmaCannonball · 27/09/2021 09:50

I was so gripped by Suranne being trapped in the torpedo tube that I watched Secret Army, a drama made in the 1970s and which I've already seen at least twice, instead. It was a good decision. The ending of Vigil was so perfunctory, and I just wasn't remotely interested in Suranne's personal life. It was a bit like those episodes of Homeland which focus on Carrie's relationship with her family while all you care about is her stopping the baddies.

Yes, that thought did cross my mind.
workshy44 · 27/09/2021 10:01

I really enjoyed it. The only thing that let it down was the lack of motivation on Dowards part for spying for the Russians. That was never explained- why would he do that- there was zero gain for him and to say it was because it made him "special" was daft
There should have been some story behind why he did it.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/09/2021 10:17

Weak ending. Stabbing was grim. I can still hear the noise.

Who killed Burke and how? The cook, but how, missed that.

All a bit rushed at the end. What was the purpose of the goldfish?

I thought he would be the son of the one of the earlier fishing boat disasters

Poison in his food

Dragonpox · 27/09/2021 11:27

When the posh xo guy gets her out of the torpedo tube it felt like they'd edited something out in between as it just jumped to it.

Also wouldn't you send more than 2 men to fix the bilge leak thing if it going to sink the ship?

Also given how messed up Amy was before she got on the sun there is no way she'll function normally after all that trauma. So the happy ending will be about 2 mins long before she starts having nightmares about being trapped in torpedo tubes with mad Scottish Russians.

JacquelineCarlyle · 27/09/2021 11:34

I need to stop reading this thread now as I did enjoy the ending but you're all making me realise that it was actually a bit shit Grin

What was the story behind Jackie’s son getting out of prison early, was that another to do with anything?
I just got more confused to be honest!
How deadly was it to kill Burke but not anyone else who handled it? And if it was in a tin when she put it in the food how was she able to seal it back up? And what was supposed to do with it, who was she supposed to kill next?
Also, doward hardly seemed to have any motive whatsoever to do any of it!!

iklboo · 27/09/2021 13:22

The Russians got her son out o notoriously horrific Indonesian prison in exchange for killing Burke & setting the nerve agent off. The toxin used to kill him wasn't in the nerve agent tin. It was probably mixed in with something else.

She was meant to open it somewhere more 'public' in the sub forcing it to surface.

poorbuthappy · 27/09/2021 13:35

I was afraid ep 6 would be a let down.
Just like the last ep of LOD.
Seems there is a pattern here.
Perhaps next series they should just stop at ep 5 / penultimate ep and really leave us hanging.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 27/09/2021 13:49

I didn't mind Prentice being gruesomely murdered. Adam James always plays an annoyingly nasty smarmy character who gets away with it so to see his redemption arc end in his brutal murder was vaguely amusing Grin

NashvilleQueen · 27/09/2021 13:50

Sorry if it's already been asked but ...

Jackie had to kill Burke so the Russians could get their man on board as his replacement. The message for Jackie to release the nerve agent was presumably given by Dowden. But who gave her the instruction to kill Burke? There wasn't another Russian agent on Vigil at that point and it was clear that they couldn't have comms sent to them on the boat.

NashvilleQueen · 27/09/2021 13:52

Doward I mean

May have been given before they set off?
