Apologies if there is already a thread but I missed it? Been watching since episode 2 and always adore it... did I miss something in episode 1 about change of presenters? Is this just because it is previous contenders or is it permanent? I miss George et al. Loving seeing all the old faces though! Thanks

This was filmed at the height of the first Melbourne lockdown. (We're just enduring the end of the second one now). That's why it feels less glossy. There's not much else they can do other than cook in the main kitchen.

There were some outdoor events early on before the lockdown. I actually quite like this version. I can't help thinking they must use the equivalent of my weekly shop to make a stock for one dish.
IWantToBeMelissaWhenIGrowUp · 21/10/2020 10:26

Awww last night was quite sad, and going home on veggos too! If I hear "plant based diet" one more time though...

Now I have a question for you dedicated eagle eyed MC viewers, frequently Jock has a little wooden string of beads - bracelet(?) held in his hand and fiddles with it. He was doing it last night when they were sitting at the table. I wonder if it is like a fiddle thing or worry beads? DH is convinced they are rosary beads but I can't see it myself...

Has anyone also noticed that when the contestants are cooking and the judges come talk to them, Melissa is usually on her own but Jock and Andy are together (well Andy is basically seven steps being Jock all the time Wink)

I think we need Jock on for a Masterchef AMA...or Melissa! Imagine Grin

IWantToBeMelissaWhenIGrowUp · 21/10/2020 10:33
@IWantToBeMelissaWhenIGrowUp OMG I bet he DOES smell gorgeous. He's like a bad, good looking boy done good who can cook too. What's not to like??
I forgot to say, I'm at the age where I don't really like bad boys whether they've done good or not Grin But I'll make an exception for Jock. He is just so twinkly eyed when he smiles at people. The looks he gives Reynold especially make me smile.

Also, (I know you all want to know this). I have now generously allowed DH to play Jock. I am attempting to play Melissa which involves me saying "sweet...salty....sour...umami" whilst punctuating each word with a sort of jazz hand wave effect and swaying slightly from side to side. It's much more impressive than it sounds.

I don't think that when people talk about role play in the bedroom, this is quite what they mean Grin

XiCi · 21/10/2020 10:35

Yes I noticed those beads last night IWantToBeMelissaWhenIGrowUp. They looked like worry beads to me. It was just a little bracelet and the beads looked too big to be a rosary

BigFatLiar · 21/10/2020 10:56

“These are worry beads,” he said, holding up the item. “I’ve got lots of different types of worry beads and when I’m feeling anxious or a little bit stressed, basically I worry. So I flick through them … and the more anxious … I get, the faster I do it.”

Zonfrillo said he has had the worry beads in his pocket during every single MasterChef episode this year.

MN really answers any possible question anyone would have about anything - I love it!

Thank you big. So he is not a fiddler or extremely religious, he is a worrier. I find that strangely endearing as he doesn't "come across" as someone worrying, he seems so calm and confident on the surface. I'm probably explaining that badly.

Viewfromtheisland · 21/10/2020 11:38

@HeronLanyon I was thinking Olivia de Havilland.

HeronLanyon · 21/10/2020 19:34

viewfrom you are absolutely spot on there. Yes. A bit ingrid but hugely Olivia and I’ve never realised they looked a bit similar.

HeronLanyon · 21/10/2020 19:38

And to think Olivia de Havilland died just in July this year - just seems like a whole ‘nother epoc.

Viewfromtheisland · 21/10/2020 19:39

Agreed, they really do. Have watched far too many old films......

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/10/2020 22:11

Me and DH were laughing last night at how obvious it is that he doesnt like her. His voice changes and he almost seems irritated when he is speaking to her.

DH and I thought he might be a bit fed up of her fan girling - it’s so obvious she looks to him and he just seems a bit over it all.

StartupRepair · 22/10/2020 01:23

Laura was pretty badly bullied on Australian social media when MCA was shown here. People criticised her adherence to pasta and the perception that Jock gave her an easy path. She got support from the judges and other contestants over the trolling.

icklekid · 22/10/2020 05:07

Pleased to see the thread remains strong! I keep forgetting to check back - I’m not sure I’d twigged the lockdown link and makes a lot of sense now why they haven’t had so many guests in etc or been out and about. What date is the final airing as my dh has said I can watch it (he hates it normally and I end up catching up in snippets!)

OP posts:
HeronLanyon · 22/10/2020 05:57

I don’t know what night the final is and date not look anywhere for fear of spoilers - tonight will be three cooking with one going. That will leave three. That’s all I know. Is the final a three way cook off ?? Ie could the final be tomorrow night ???

BigFatLiar · 22/10/2020 06:40

I think tonight is an elimination, tomorrow is semi-final which makes Monday final (odd day to have final).

XiCi · 22/10/2020 06:53

Yes I had a quick look at the schedule and its Monday the final. I dont really take to Laura at all but feel sorry for her re the online bullying. Explains why she all all of a sudden stopped doing pasta dishes as well.

AiryFairy1 · 22/10/2020 07:35

I’m sad to hear that Laura had problems with bullying - she hasn’t been my favourite but I think she stuck to her strengths in the early stages. As Callum said, in the beginning you’re trying to not get eliminated and nearer The Pointy End of the Competition, you’re trying to win - so trotting The Big Guns Out (sorry not sorry for MCA lingo Grin)
And she must be good to have made it this far (beating all my favs anyway!)

FelicityPike · 22/10/2020 07:41

My 5 year old is OBSESSED with Laura!

BigFatLiar · 22/10/2020 07:49

Can't blame Laura for doing so much pasta as they all tended to stick with what they were good at, pasta, veggies, deserts etc. It's just some looked more 'wow' than others.

puddlesuit · 22/10/2020 07:55

Ooo I've just come across this thread - a bit late considering the final is Monday!

I love this programme, it's great.

MrsBungle · 22/10/2020 08:08

I’d like Calum or Reynold to win. Reynolds really is truly exceptional. I’ve warmed a bit more to Laura. I’d forgotten how young she is. She was only 18 in her season of masterchef and came second, that’s pretty amazing. She’s only 24 now.

I cannot get on with Meelsy at all. That speech about how she’s an exceptional cook turned me off even more. I honestly think though that either her or Laura will win it. Over the course of the competition I really don’t think they’ve been anywhere near the best.

AiryFairy1 · 22/10/2020 08:10

That’s it @BigFatLiar (what a name Grin) ... I think I like Reynold’s dishes because they LOOK amazing. A bowl of pasta, however delicious, is still a bowl of pasta (it’s one of my main food groups so I’d still woof it down though)

XiCi · 22/10/2020 08:23

I hope you're wrong MrsBungle I couldn't bear it if Meelsy won. I've been hoping she'd get eliminated for weeks now. I was shouting at the telly at her contrived 'exceptional cook' performance for the judges

Viewfromtheisland · 22/10/2020 09:43

The exceptional cook speech was awful, was it editing or did she recover quickly? Team Callum here but I don’t think he will win after last night. So pleased final is Monday as going camping tomorrow. Would rather be watching TV but never mind.
