I’m not sure if there is a thread already, please direct me to it if there is!

It’s summer which means its the time of year I start musing about which celebs might be up for the glitter ball trophy this year! I was a bit worried we might not be getting a series this year but a quick google reassured me plans are in place.

So it looks like they are hoping for bubbles between the stars and professionals families, possibly weekly CV testing and temp checks. Hair, make up and costume to be done with PPE. Sounds like they could put on a fairly similar show to normal. No audience though, which will be weird. And I guess no gathering of contestants for the scores, which will be weird. Will the whole thing lack atmosphere?

I do wonder if some dancers would have been against dancing with a same sex partner. As said Nicola Adams is paired with Katya Jones.
I would imagine a heterosexual male dancer wouldn’t want to partner with another male celeb.

It shouldn’t matter-they’re not having sex and I’m sure the gay dancers don’t object to dancing with women since they’re not sexually attracted to them. I’m fascinated by the potential for Nicola and Katya to challenge the strength, dominance, lead/follow dynamic of dance..!

@JamminDoughnuts

stacey dooley won it that year, beating Fay
So it was. But my point about being a ringer up against a good non-ringer stands.
JamminDoughnuts · 19/10/2020 10:00

yes Stacey Dooley had a big following

I think the only potential issue with a same sex pairing is how do the judges treat Nicola? Should she be judged as “in role” - so if dancing the lead to be judged in terms of movement and strength against the other male dancers, or should she be judged as a woman dancing that role and some sort of allowance made in that her body won’t move in exactly the same way? Does that make sense?!

My main hope is that they don’t take the easy options - I’ll be very disappointed if the dances that are harder to lead are danced with Katya as leader. Of course there are no “easy” dances, but I hope you know what I mean!

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2020 12:10

Cave Why? IMO Katya is the professional and will be teaching\leading Nicola. The same with a professional male gay or not, dancing with a non dancer, beginner or not male.

I don't get why you should make something out of nothing.

CaveMum · 19/10/2020 12:25

I think I’m expressing what I mean badly. I don’t mean that she “should“ be judged differently, just that it can be hard to dance the opposite role.

With regards to switching roles, in some ways it is easier for them as they’re allowed to switch between roles (as far as I’m aware they haven’t said that Nicola must dance a certain number of dances as leader or follower). A male/female partnership can’t do that, so a cynical person might say that if Nicola is struggling in one role for a particular dance she can try the other and see if it’s “easier” for her.

Don’t want to sound like I’m criticising, I’m all for this being done more, I’m just thinking out loud!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/10/2020 12:25

Isn't CaveMum saying that Nicola could "opt out" of leading if she found it hard, whereas a man in a mixed-sex partnership wouldn't have that choice?

I think they might sometimes choreograph it so the lead changes even within a dance (imagine going into a oversway, go through a practice hold, and come out with the other leading).

It won't be be exactly comparable, but then I'd really like them to do side-by-side style latin, which would be directly comparable either.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/10/2020 12:43

I realised we were on page 40, so thought I'd start a new thread in plenty of time.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 19/10/2020 13:44

I dont like Karen's hair either.
But agree with a pp that was done to tell her and Janette apart

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 19/10/2020 14:00

Was Gorka given the same instructions Grin

dementedma · 19/10/2020 18:37

I like Nicola but thing the same sex pairing is trying too hard and unfair on the others. It’s not as if being gay on Strictly is a big deal is it?
also, if Nicola is wearing more traditional male outfits as in the first show, she gets to wear flat shoes so doesn’t have the additional challenge of dancing in heels which the other female celebs have to cope with

SoupDragon · 19/10/2020 19:26

I'll be very disappointed if they just make her a woman in man's clothing dancing the male part. If she's said she wants to lead and (pure supposition) doesn't want to wear the dresses then it's a bit of a cop out.

lynsey91 · 21/10/2020 11:09

I really like Karen's hair. I think it really suits her. I also like Gorka's hair although I seem to be very much in the minority
