Strictly 2020, Bubbles and no Bruno?

I’m not sure if there is a thread already, please direct me to it if there is!

It’s summer which means its the time of year I start musing about which celebs might be up for the glitter ball trophy this year! I was a bit worried we might not be getting a series this year but a quick google reassured me plans are in place.

So it looks like they are hoping for bubbles between the stars and professionals families, possibly weekly CV testing and temp checks. Hair, make up and costume to be done with PPE. Sounds like they could put on a fairly similar show to normal. No audience though, which will be weird. And I guess no gathering of contestants for the scores, which will be weird. Will the whole thing lack atmosphere?

Have just rewound.

There was a hint of the Gwendoline’s to her smile. You could be right.

Nicola’s smile seemed genuine though.

Clawdy · 17/10/2020 22:07

Really like Ranvir, loved her summary of the Indian dancing " putting in a light bulb and patting the dog" !

ThursdayLastWeek · 17/10/2020 22:11

I missed it! Will watch tomorrow before work hopefully so checking in to get my place on the thread and wave hello to you all.

Best thread on MN each year this one Glitterball

Facelikearustytractor · 17/10/2020 22:11

Looks promising. Final four will be Nicola, Maisie, RV (got rid of a couple more letters for him) and Max (although I don't think he was the best dancer, just think he will be popular with the ladies) It will be between Jackie and Jason week one, Jason because I don't think he is that well known here, although he seems like a nice chap. I am most excited about Bill and Oti though!

Everyone seemed nice and down to earth. Caroline really stuck out as a posh Luvvie type, even with BVB there.

I'm getting a whiff of a strictly curse this year though. I think it's the living arrangements.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 17/10/2020 22:18

I really like the line up this year. I hope they stick to a less hyperactive format however it's early days 😂

Will they be adding a 4th (guest?) judge as the series progresses?

Clawdy · 17/10/2020 22:21

I thought Bruno was going to be 4th judge? On a zoom type thing?

CaveMum · 17/10/2020 22:27

Bruno is going to join in on the results show to give gets, but no official judging. They’re planning on bringing him back once DWTS finishes on 23 Nov, but if he has to quarantine that means he won’t be free until the 12th December show which is set to be the semi final.

CaveMum · 17/10/2020 22:27

I have no idea what “give gets” is! That was supposed to be “give feedback” 🤔

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/10/2020 22:28

I really hope Bill doesn't get that thing anomaly where he's clearly better at ballroom than Latin but gets landed with Latin for the first 5 weeks so gets booted off as a result.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/10/2020 22:31

I think the plan is for Bruno to come back when DWTS has finished, so perhaps the last two shows.

I feel a bit sorry for Gorka having to live with Maisy, although he must be happy to get a partner who can dance this year.

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 17/10/2020 22:32

Can't believe Nadia has been axed this year. That's probably it for her career.

CaveMum · 17/10/2020 22:32

I’m like an old broken record, but they really should go back to the old format of alternating ballroom and latin, it’s not fair that some celebs get much harder dances early on.

Obviously there are no “easy” dances, but there’s a vast difference between getting a Cha Cha Cha or a Samba in week one!

ThrawnCow · 17/10/2020 22:36

Maisie is living on her own, not with Gorka. That's what she said anyway.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/10/2020 22:39

CaveMum I agree entirely. And that leads to my biggest bug bear of strictly. how can you compare all of the dances as equals and give them a score on the same leaderboard????

They are all different dances with different characteristics and some people suit some dances more than other dances. It's human nature

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/10/2020 22:40

@ThrawnCow

Oh, good. I don't know how I got the impression that the pairs were living together. If everyone is on their own then at least they get a break from each other.
TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 17/10/2020 22:43

I think it has the potential to be good fun this year - which is what we need right now!

I never thought for a second they'd put Oti with Jamie - can you imagine the pressure of not being as good as Kelvin and imagining her constantly wishing that she had "replacement Jamie" back?! So am glad that they didn't do that. Bill looks as if he will try hard and has some moves!

Can't believe Tess already brought up Jay to the Wanted guy - talk about putting the pressure on. He must be devastated too by the news about his bandmate - I imagine that he's probably finding everything quite overwhelming at the moment.

Hate Gorka's hair. Hate it. He and Maisie will make a talented couple but she needs to win the audience over...

CaveMum · 17/10/2020 22:43

Gin totally agree! I even got into a heated discussion about it on Twitter a few years ago and got told by actual Kevin “From Grimsby” Clifton that my suggestion was not exciting enough and the audience don’t want it 🤔

I’d just jumped in on someone else’s thread and didn’t realise he was tagged in it 😂. I commented that the choreography should be limited to no higher than Silver level for the first 3-4 weeks so that everyone was on a more level playing field.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 17/10/2020 23:11

CaveMan Not sure whether to be impressed or scared of you now that I know you had a Twitter argument with Kevin from Grimsby. Some would say that's the stuff of dreams GrinGrin

Starksforthewin · 17/10/2020 23:12

I don’t think the public will warm to Maisie, not the most engaging personality.
I think Clara and Aljaz is an inspired pairing and they should reach the final.
Hopefully Jacqui will be first out, how on Earth she was selected for this, heaven knows. A failed Home Secretary with a very dodgy record on expenses (not just the porn used by her husband).
She really shouldn’t be turning up on a flagship entertainment show.

Like others, sad to see Graziano didn’t get a partner, guess that’s because of the same sex pairing and the reduced numbers for Male professionals this year.

Am loving the lack of out of time clapping and whooping from the audience. It’s also great that social distancing means that Tess has to keep her claws off the celebrities. 👍🏻

I hope they are going to drop the covid rules statements now. Just get on with the show so we can try and forget the life-ruining pandemic outside the Strictly bubble.

PawFives · 17/10/2020 23:24

Really enjoyed that, bit of normality to have Strictly back. Liked the reveals more too, reminded me of the earlier shows. Also really liked the 20s style group dance with the singers featured as part of the production (even Anton!). Think Maisie is annoying but good so likely finalist. Harvey is DD’s favourite, I’d never heard of him but she knew who he was. Clara looks good and Bill is funny and better at dancing than you might have thought (although he is very musical). First boot probably Jacqui.

CaveMum · 17/10/2020 23:32

😂😂 Gin! I was bricking it when I realised but thought, in for a penny in for a pound! He’s never been one of my favourite pros so there was no bubble burst!

gleegeek · 18/10/2020 00:14

Hooray! Think I can survive winter if there's still Strictly sparkle in it!
Am intrigued by the celebs. Some of them are much older than I realised! I thought Clara was in her 20s... It might be a close run competition this year🤞
Love BB and think Oti will get every last bit of dance potential out of him. Maisie is good but exhausting, poor Gorka will have his hands full. Love Clara and Aljaz!
Bottom two, Jacqui and BVB...

SoupDragon · 18/10/2020 00:15

@BadlydoneHelen

One of the other members of the Wanted is terminally ill I think I read- incredibly sad
Yes, Tom Parker has a brain tumour. Really sad - 32, 1 small child plus one on the way. :( Just awful.
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 18/10/2020 00:16

Years ago, I remember you could give them your phone number and they texted out the list of partners when they they were released to the press.

I wouldn't thank you for a paso in week one. At least something like a samba can be endearingly sloppy if you're all enthusiasm and no technique. I'd much rather they had one ballroom and one Latin dance for the first couple of weeks (two of each if they really think our attention spans are that short).

I'm also hoping some of Nicola's quiet competitiveness might rub off on Katya (well, the quiet part!). I've done a few workshops with good pros, and (generalising horribly) the Latin couples often seem to have a lot of excess energy... ballroom workshops are usually much calmer!

Ellmau · 18/10/2020 00:16

Hopefully Jacqui will be first out, how on Earth she was selected for this, heaven knows.

I think they had the scrape the barrel a bit this year finding people willing to isolate for the show. Not too bad a lineup generally considering.
