GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8. Possible spoilers

Given we are only a week away from the final season, I thought we should have a shiny new thread to discuss the episodes as they are broadcast.

Anyone else going to be starting their watch at 2 am on Monday 15th?

I've watched the trailers and teasers dozens of times, and I am READY!

I have a theory that the Battle for Winterfell in Ep 3 will be lost, and they will have to move south, re assemble at Dragonstone or Kings Landing. After all, here are three episodes to fill after that!

There are no male Starks to carry on the bloodline

The surname, rather. Jon is from the Stark bloodline.

SweetSummerchild · 28/04/2019 08:48

In the books Robb’s Will exists which most likely names Jon Snow as heir to Winterfell. One of his heirs could easily inherit Winterfell.

Or, as I mentioned upthread, a child of a female Stark could be named as Lord Stark - legitimate or otherwise.

TheInvestigator · 28/04/2019 09:02

Would House Tyrell be able to do that too? Olenna had other granddaughters. There is a surviving female line from the Tyrell's. Could one of them reclaim the lands and titles for themselves of their sons and call them Tyrell?

SweetSummerchild · 28/04/2019 09:06

TheInvestigator anything is possible, and would be supported if a political marriage was made with a powerful house.

The Tyrells themselves were stewards who took over Highgarden when the Gardener house was wiped out during Aegon’s conquest.

ElenadeClermont · 28/04/2019 10:18

The Tyrells were Targaryen loyalists, so Dany might care about their fate. Otherwise the Tarlys (Sam) could become Wardens of the South. They are Tyrell bannermen after all.

BlackCatSleeping · 28/04/2019 10:32

The cast have definitely lied about stuff that's going to happen before, so they aren't really trustworthy.

JH made a big deal about how when Arya saved the 3 of them, they owed 3 lives to the Faceless God or whatever it's called. For this reason alone, I feel that Beric and Jon are unlikely to survive. But, it's hard to tell for sure. I love reading fan theories, but some are definitely more bonkers than others.

SweetSummerchild · 28/04/2019 11:13

I love reading crazy theories, but some of them are definitely clutching at straws. There are still plenty of ‘flat-earthers’ out there who refuse to believe that R+L=J.

What Jaqen was doing in the black cells and why he was going to the wall is definitely a mystery. I have read loads of theories - including one that he was going north to try to find and kill Bloodraven - but nothing particularly convincing. The fact that he later shows up at the Citadel is even more mysterious.

I saw this video and throught it was very interesting. I can certainly see a final confrontation between the NK and Dany/Drogon and I definitely buy the idea that when the Mad King said “burn them all” he was referring to the Weirwoods.

Giggorata · 28/04/2019 12:45

As I said upthread, they played Jaqen's distinctive signature tun in the scene where Arya got her spear from Gendry... perhaps Gendry is Jaqen? (Although that would be a bit creepy if he had sex with her later under false pretences)

Aberforthsgoat · 28/04/2019 14:41

@giggorata they’ve played that tune before for Arya though when Jacquen wasn’t around, I think it’s just become “her” music like some of the others have their tunes that play in important scenes

I love reading theories, some of them are so well thought out and researched. A lot of them hinge on book lore though that hasn’t been touched on in the tv show or not enough detail given for me
To think those aspects would be featured now with so little episodes left

Giggorata · 28/04/2019 15:03

Have they? Oh well, another theory bites the dust! 😀

Aberforthsgoat · 28/04/2019 16:14

I mean at this point ANYTHING could happen so who knows, you can pop back on and lord it over me if gendry rips off his face at a later dateGrin

SweetSummerchild · 28/04/2019 18:11

Any guesses for the Episode title for 8.03?

My guess is ‘The Long Night’...

LunaMay · 28/04/2019 18:48

Does anyone think Qyburn and his experiments will have any kind of a role to play or are we to far along for that. I remember him picking up the hand of the wight and having a good look, he's smart enough to come up with something surely. Or will it just be kill them with fire.

OneInAMillionYou · 28/04/2019 19:38

I've not yet read the books. Decided to wait till after the tv series/GRRM finishes writing them. So my knowledge is based entirely on the show.

However, I am IN AWE of the level of detail and knowledge being demonstrated by poseurs on this thread. Seriously impressed.

This is why I think it is such a pity the series is being wrapped up in a hurry in S8. There is SO much material and so many storylines the show runners could have explored if they had so chosen.
GRRM has gone on record saying he didn't think it should end so soon, but I think the two Ds are getting offers right left and centre to move on to other things.

Although I am excited for tonight and the rest of the season, killing off half the cast for expediency doesn't sit well with me! I love the fact everyone is in Westeros, mainly at Winterfell, and think so many amazing plots could have come from this.
When you think of the pace of the first four seasons and the detail they went into... Practically a whole bloody season on the High Sparrow and Faith Militant (ultimately irrelevant ) and Arya spent so many episodes in Braavos!

Oh God, sorry! Posters NOT poseurs.

Please forgive 😳

TheweewitchRoz · 28/04/2019 19:47

I agree @OneInAMillionYou , although who are the 2 Ds?

CalmConfident · 28/04/2019 19:53

Is it 2am yet....Grin

SweetSummerchild · 28/04/2019 19:55

who are the 2 Ds?

David Benioff and Dan Weiss - producers of the series.

JasperRising · 28/04/2019 19:55

OneInAMillionYou so right about the pacing! I mean the faith militant kind of had a purpose as it was tied up with wiping out the Tyrells with all their wealth but it does seem a bit pointless now they are all dead... You can see the pacing change as soon as they were fully past the book material.

That said I think the books go too far the other way and have so many side characters and plotlines and slow pacing that I can see why GRR Martin is struggling to bring it all back together and to a conclusion!

SweetSummerchild · 28/04/2019 20:12

I do get why the pacing has had to increase. D&D must have had an ‘oh shit’ moment when they sat down with GRRM and realised how many plot points had to be hit by the end of the series. They would have needed 10 seasons at least (which means we probably need another 5 books). Whole stories have been totally dropped or, Doran Martell style, simply cut dead in the middle of a story.

However, they are working with ‘real’ actors - some of whom want to get on with other projects as well. The ‘per episode’ fees for the actors have increased dramatically. I get why they want to call it a day.

To me one of the biggest issues has been the quality of the script. There are glaring plot holes, the dialogue is lazily written and too many important events happen off-screen. Character development and motivations seem inconsistent and the reliance on Deus ex Machina to save the protagonists from the stupid situations they get themselves into is very jarring in a series where people are supposed to suffer the consequences of their errors.

That being said, I really enjoyed the last episode.

Aberforthsgoat · 28/04/2019 20:26

I agree @sweetsummerchild some of the dialogue is actually quite jolting because it doesn’t “fit”
I think it’s also fallen victim of becoming too Hollywood as it’s increased in popularity and run out of source material - now it seems we need to have everything spelled out to us instead of trusting we will work it out for ourselves. There also the love of the spectacle even if it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense plot wise - ie in Beyond the Wall, and the plot devices are really clear. You can see the whole sending Bronn to kill
the Lannister brothers a mile off for what it is -
Just a way to get him in the thick of it.

Having said that, like you, I really enjoyed the last episode. The dialogue wasn’t top top quality but better than it has been - aside from the “damn good job” Grin

OneInAMillionYou · 28/04/2019 20:29

Totally agree with you sweetsummerchild

Some of the writing has been shocking. Underwritten, clunky dialogue.

As if Jon and Arya would spend the first minutes of their reunion comparing their bloody swords.

Don't get me started on Dany and Jon riding the dragons. Should have been an epic moment, but thrown away in a 'Mr Bean Rides A Dragon' sort of style...

Having said that, it's still GoT so I love lots about it and much enjoyed Episode 2 last week.

I just hope someone paid the lighting bill for tonight's episode so we can bloody well see what is happening 😀

Only thing that works for me is to turn all the lights off and watch the show in the dark...

SweetSummerchild · 28/04/2019 21:25

Ha, yes. I’ll be watching at 6am with the lights off and two feet from the television so I can see what’s happening and don’t have DH moaning at me that I’m blocking his view!

LazyFace · 28/04/2019 21:28

I'll try and put the brightness up on thw screen otherwise won't see a thing.
