I’ve binge watched for 2 days as I’m ill. I never tire of it. I have one niggle: about Pete and Dawn’s children. Why do they look so young in the vow renewal scene? If they were that young, they’d have been round at Pam and Mick’s all the time too.

Was a bit weird yesterday seeing Pam Ferris in G and S followed by Matilda.

My favourite characters are Ness and Bryn. I like Ness the way I liked Father Jack. Every single thing they say is funny and you just want to hear more.

Did Ness and Smithy end up together? That was how i interpreted the last scene (ordering the takeaway) when I watched it (and what I choose to believe!) but I gather that others think otherwise?

TheEfficientBaxter · 12/01/2019 12:15

I wonder where that caravan site is exactly?

The one where Ness, Dave and Neil, the baby, lived.

Ness was a fab clairvoyant, wasn't she Grin

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 12/01/2019 13:06

Literally just finished watching the last episode now - might I add it is perfect 'poorly' viewing. I was crying at the moment Nessa told Gwen she was basically her mum and thanked her for everything, then snogged her right on the lips - that's pure Gavin and Stacey perfection, touching but then humour slicing right through it so it never gets mawkish.

I don't think Smithy and Nessa end up together - not as a proper couple anyway. I think they stay as friends who occasionally shag when they get drunk. I don't know, maybe they do, but I think it would take a while. Can you imagine the arguments?! 'OH Smithy! Stop being a twat!' He would definitely be under her authority in any relationship they had Grin I think they sort of gravitate around each other but I think they would probably clash too much to really make a proper go of it. But neither would be chuffed to see the other get with anyone else. It's telling though that just about the only time Nessa properly smiles in 3 series is when she says to Smithy 'there's only one of you isn't there'.

Anyway it definitely gets my vote as my favourite ever sitcom. The whole thing is pure joy to watch - I'm glad it stopped when it did as you wouldn't want it to get flabby and old as things do when they go on too long.

What's everyone's favourite episode then? For me it has to be the Christmas special, or possibly the one in series 3 where they all get absolutely wasted at Pam & Mick's. Love it all Grin

ItsJustASimpleLine · 12/01/2019 13:36

Stacey says in the first episode that she's going to start giving up smoking when she's 28 so she's younger then that.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 12/01/2019 13:38

We often say 'you and me are gonna fall out Mick'

My 5yr old is confused but she has started copying...oops

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/01/2019 13:40

When we are thinking about where to go out for a meal, if it's an Italian we say " let's go to Carpricios " in a cockney accent.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 12/01/2019 14:14

Bryns computer when he's getting a route plan for Gavin is really dating Grin. Then he gives him a computer lesson lol.

TheEfficientBaxter · 12/01/2019 17:00

I love all those throwaway lines (usually from Ness) about things that have happened in the past, and get us wondering about what went on!

That one about Bryn 'having had his chance' was brilliantly clever.

The fact that they are never explained just makes it even funnier Wink

Whatabloodymessthisis · 12/01/2019 17:27

I love how hospitable they all are ... both families allowing the others to stay round and going out for meals together, cooking for each other. I just don’t think that true level of hospitality would happen in real life.

Iwantedthatname19 · 12/01/2019 17:54

When they all come down and stay in Essex (Jason included sometimes) where exactly are they sleeping? Not in the sitting room because they come downstairs to go to the kitchen. Do Pam and Mich have two or three spare rooms?

LuckyLou7 · 12/01/2019 18:03

@Iwantedthatname19
It's a 5 bedroom house, and you do see a couple of house guests on foldout beds in the sitting room.

The very last scene of the very last episode shows a heavily pregnant Stacy with Gavin and Nessa on the seafront in Barry. Smithy comes along and says 'what's occurring?' and they all laugh and accuse him of becoming Welsh. I took that to mean is he now living in Wales with Nessa and Neil.
Or is that just my wishful thinking?

Iwantedthatname19 · 12/01/2019 18:07

Yes that was one of the reasons I thought he and Ness were now an item. The other is that they're out as a foursome without the baby Neil the baby. If Smithy was just there to visit tbntb, they'd have him (tbntb) with them. So I take that to mean that Smithy is living with them and Gwen's having tbntb for the afternoon.

Too forensic?

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 12/01/2019 18:11

He affectionately put his arm on her shoulder as he arrived. So I reckon living in Wales and in an embryonic 'romance' with Nessa. Neil keeping it all friendly and on an even keel.

Iwantedthatname19 · 12/01/2019 18:12

On the other hand, factors that suggest that Ness and Smithy are not an item:

  1. As another pp pointed out, in the final scene Smithy sort of pats Ness's back. More of a friendly gesture than a partner one.
  1. Smithy and Ness do find a lot about each other repulsive (as they confirmed at the non-wedding!)

So Smithy's use of the term 'what's occurring' may just be because he's visiting a lot more, to see Neil the baby.

Practical question - where did Vanessa and Neil the baby go to live after the non-wedding? Obviously they had to leave the caravan. Bryn's place maybe?

Iwantedthatname19 · 12/01/2019 18:15

Ah, cross posted! So you saw the shoulder pat as indicative of a romance, MsChook, rather than platonic? I hope you're right.

Though I think Nessa would do well living in Essex with Smithy as well - she, Cath and Rudi would be....interesting housemates.

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 12/01/2019 18:16

Well, yes, but maybe it's because I want there to be a romance... Grin

ItsJustASimpleLine · 12/01/2019 18:25

I think Smithy is living in Wales but not in a relationship with Nessa but that they've become friends.

TheEfficientBaxter · 12/01/2019 18:39

I've had to dig through my CD collection to find that Snow Patrol track. I'm going to listen to it now.

LuckyLou7 · 12/01/2019 18:50

Well in my imaginary ongoing Gavin and Stacy series, Nessa, Smithy and Neil live together in Barry, as do Gavin and Stacy and their child. Pam and Mick come and visit regularly and are looking at relocating to Cardiff to be nearer their little prince and grandchild. Uncle Bryn is now out and proud and has a lovely boyfriend. Grin

I would love it if they did one more special to show what they are all up to - but it's never going to happen, not now James has made it in America. I doubt many of the other cast members would be available either, and who could replace Doris, may she RIP?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/01/2019 18:55

I always took it as Smithy and Nessa having some kind of relationship at the end, after all she ditched Dave at the alter. I think we are meant to read into that that they were a couple, making a go of it as a family for Neil the baby

TheEfficientBaxter · 12/01/2019 19:35

Oh yes! I would love to think that Bryn has a lovely furry bear of a man as his live-in boyfriend.

Even better would be a special wedding episode for them!

So do we all think that Bryn is gay then?

LuckyLou7 · 12/01/2019 19:52

Uncle Bryn is definitely gay but deeply in denial. One of the funniest scenes is when he volunteers to apply sunscreen to Mick's chest on the beach in Barry. Mick's discomfort and Bryn's enjoyment is so funny to see.

Helipad · 12/01/2019 20:33

Thanks a lot, I now have to re-watch all the episodes too Grin

I've already started today, once kids are in bed, I shall carry on. Tidy like.

My DH is from Dynas Powys, lovely village. I really like Barry Island too, we often pop over there when visiting his family. The sea front promenade has been re-generated in recent years, it's a great spot to take kids for the day.

Kelpiex2 · 12/01/2019 20:37

Pam calls it 'Barry's island' Grin

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 12/01/2019 20:45

I wonder why the black & white dog is always seen running across the promenade at Barry.
