A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

I enjoyed it too. I'm definitely going to do this Season again, they often flow better without waiting a week in between. Loved Ian and Jamie. Loved Murtagh and Jocasta too.

Whisky2014 · 28/01/2019 20:00

I absolutely HATE Roger

Abra1de · 28/01/2019 20:09

I don’t find Scotland convincing as Carolina/New York state. There’s not enough sunlight. Scotland is such a lot further north.

The scenery looks too small and closed in.

Loving the series otherwise.

Holidayshopping · 28/01/2019 20:49

I quite like Bree in the TV series-she was so annoying in the book! It felt like all she did for 3 books was breastfeed! I feel for poor Roger.

Abra1de · 28/01/2019 20:54

I like Bree, but Roger has always irritated me.

blibblibs · 28/01/2019 22:55

I was a bit worried about tonight's episode but it was better than I expected.
Still think it was wrong to not have J&C at the birth though.
And I do love Murtagh but chesty Murtagh doesn't not make up for the lack of chesty Jamie!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/01/2019 08:16

Murtagh was quite buff with his shirt off, wasn't he?

I'm afraid that my 21st century sensibilities keep intruding. During the big Bree/ Roger reunion, all I could think was "I bet he smells to high heaven"
And the little wedge of hairy Rankin chest he shows all the time is annoying

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/01/2019 08:19

Bu seriously, considering how much happened in Series 1 and 2, I don't feel that very much happened in this season.
If they had edited out scenes of various characters tramping through Scotland New England woods, the season would have been 2 hours shorter.

Lessstressedhemum · 29/01/2019 09:18

I'm sorry but shirtless Murtagh will never make up for a lack of shirtless Jamie. I also thought that Murtagh's chest was as unconvincing as a 70-odd year old man's chest as Claire's boobs were last season as a 50-year old woman's boobs, if that makes any sense.

Does North Carolina have a lot more sunshine than we do? I've never been to America so don't really know very much about that kind of thing. I just thought that the scenery was beautiful and showed of my country well, apart from the fact that they all looked frozen a lot of the time.

I thought there were less episodes this time, but a quick Google shows I was wrong, only Season 1 had more, at 16 episodes. It just shows that it seems like it.

Perhaps, they will put in a different bonding scene with Jamie and Brianna next season. They really did seem to spend a lot of this season setting up the New World characters, so maybe the next will have Jamie becoming Laird with the settlers on Fraser's Ridge along with the Gathering please god be more succinct than the book.

legolimb · 29/01/2019 09:51

Ah - that was a nice ending though.

I am glad that they got Roger back - and tbh I suspect that Young Ian will enjoy his new life as an honorary Mohawk. He seemed pretty pleased.

I wasn't surprised to see Murtagh and Aunt Jocasta getting it on - good for them. Although when Murtagh had his hair down all I could picture was Billy Connolly. ha ha.

LessStressed the weather in N Carolina is quite varied. It can veer from a nice warm day to freezing the next. DH has a business colleague there and they often discuss the weather in and amongst work. When I visited it was late September and very warm indeed.

I thought Roger should have tried to clean himself up a bit before turning up at River Run, Bree must have smelled him coming! He must have come across a stream during his wandering, and could have at least attempted to tidy his hair and cover up that mangy chest!

I liked the scenes with Young Ian succeeding where Dogface had failed and his excitement at joining the Mohawk. It did make Roger seem even more useless by comparison. I don't blame the Mohawk for consigning him to the idiot hut or Jamie for regretting the swap!

I find tv Roger a bit weedy and annoying - in the books I got the impression he was more Jamie sized, but I suppose the physique of tv Roger is more in keeping with a 60s Oxford academic. I quite liked book Roger, apart from all the call to the ministry nonsense. Hopefully he improves in looks and character once they are settled on the Ridge.

I binge read all the books over the summer, but can't remember much about what comes next, other than the battle with the regulators, more hardship for Roger, and then the endless gathering.

Will be interesting to see what they do with Murtagh. I am enjoying his story line, probably because I don't really know exactly where it is going given the departure from the books.

Hopefully Bees will be out this year to provide a fix in the gap between tv series.

legolimb · 29/01/2019 10:17

Yes - I also though that Roger must have stunk to high heaven!

Maybe they all did though ? Envy sick, not envy

Lessstressedhemum · 29/01/2019 10:32

Jamie does say that Claire is the cleanest woman he has ever known! And there is a lot of talk in the books regarding smells. Roger must have been bowfin'. I said to DD about a stream. There are supposed to be loads of them in the forests, why didn't he just jump in one? If I had been Brianna, I would have chucked him in the eponymous River before I even thought about kissing him.

I guess the Mohawk had no respect for Roger because he had been sold to them by his own people, therefore he must have done something dreadful. He was their prisoner. They were hitting him with axes, trying to injure him.
But Ian spoke their language, he volunteered to take the place of Roger, so they respected him. The "trial" was symbolic, they were hitting him with thin branches, he was going to be an accepted member of the Tribe.

I got so annoyed at stupid details....Claire wearing her bulkiest skirt for the night raid. She could hardly support Roger her skirts were hampering her more than him

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/01/2019 12:01

I have never heard the word Bowfin' before but I like it!

Abra1de · 29/01/2019 12:34

It looked great for wintry scenes but in the scenes that weren’t set in winter it just seemed a bit grey.

In real life I like that part of Scotland very much.

Abra1de · 29/01/2019 12:36

Roger looks like someone from IT who doesn’t get much fresh air.

Florabella · 29/01/2019 13:40

It was a real shame that J and C weren't there for the birth, and that there was no conversation between Jamie and Bri. Also wish that lord John had still been there when they got back. Far too much time spent on the Otter Tooth story instead

Whisky2014 · 29/01/2019 14:24

Yeh why was there a big deal of other tooth? It didn't really add to the story..

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/01/2019 14:51

I wonder what became of the nice Mohawk woman who helped them rescue Roger?
I was surprised at how easily Chief let them go considering that it looked like several villagers got hurt or killed by the rescue party

legolimb · 29/01/2019 15:32

Whisky re the Otter Tooth.

Remember when Claire found the skull in the woods- it had a silver filling in one of the teeth. Hence must have come from someone who had travelled back in time. So Otter Tooth WAS from the future and knew that the native tribes were going to suffer and be persecuted.

So I suppose that it added more interest to the story overall knowing that there were others who also travelled in time.

Right at the beginning of the episode there was a native american man sitting on a bench in a park - in the 1970s? I wondered if he had any relevance to the story - that wasn't Otter Tooth?

legolimb · 29/01/2019 15:37

breakfast I wondered that too.

I thought perhaps she would travel with Clare and Jamie and live with them.

Maybe she'll turn up in series 5 ?

Abra1de · 29/01/2019 16:27

Good catch, Legolimb!

Whisky2014 · 29/01/2019 16:34

Yeh, I do remember that but did there have to be 75% of the last episode on that?!
Meh i dunno.
Between that and all the shit with Roger I am not a fan of this series. It was very slow and not much happened.

Wrt Roger and briana: they went to a festival, he didnt want to shag her unless they were engaged, they argued and went seperate ways. Then she went through the rocks and he followed, they met up one day got hand fasted and had sex where he didnt finish, immediately argues and she sent him on his way. So why would she risk the life of her mother, father and cousin to bring him back? The running to each other at the end...Nah. dont believe it! They argued more than they were happy!
