A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

I didn't understand why the priest wouldn't christen the child or why the Cherokee wanted it christened.

sonjadog · 22/01/2019 14:51

I think Bree and Roger are less believable as a couple as they haven't actually spent that much time together. I can't remember what it was like in the books, but I think in the series it isn't much more that a few weeks in each other's company, is it? Maybe a couple of months if all trips back and forth to America are counted. And they seem to have spent a fair amount of time fighting.

I think it is more believable that Claire and Jamie never could get over each other as they actually lived together for a few years as man and wife, and they were separated because of circumstances out of their control, rather than because they stropped off.

quirkychick · 22/01/2019 14:54

I think she tells Bonnet the child is his, because he's about to die. And it could be.

I assume the priest feels he has broken his vows and so is not worthy of performing the christening. In the books, doesn't Roger perform a christening, as the son of a Vicar, or is that later. Also, doesn't the priest die a much more grisly death?

JennyfromtheBroch · 22/01/2019 17:11

Meh. This episode just reinforced to me that I'm only here for Jamie and Claire.

blibblibs · 22/01/2019 17:42

I think I'm with you Jenny, much as DH was irritating laughing at most of it, I could see his point!
Much as I'll watch the last one, I don't think I'll suffer through droughtlander (especially not now we've started watching GoT in preparation for April!)

crumpet · 22/01/2019 19:20

Missed Jamie & Claire, but that goes without saying. Marsali is fab - the actress brings her to life so well.

I had the reservoir dogs theme running through my head as the posse marched down Wilmington to the rescue, which made me smile, and just loved the “back to the idiot hut” line. Actually Roger is coming along really well as a character. I was drawn to him when he first appeared at the end of season 2, and liked him in the books - but neither the books nor the show have really convinced me that he and Brianna are as good a match as say Marsali and Fergus. (There are one or two scenes which work nicely in future books (the vroom ones), but overall they do seem to have a bit of distance between them). Roger was great in this episode though, trying to convince himself that he’d become a cynic, but simply couldn’t stop himself from trying to help.

The ending was so good - I had forgotten the scene in the book so the dual burning came as a real surprise.

snozzlemaid · 22/01/2019 20:39

I thought this guy was great in the last scene.

quirkychick · 23/01/2019 07:31

snozzle I agree.

sonjadog · 23/01/2019 08:45

I think on the whole, the Native Americans are portrayed well in the series. They are much less stereotyped than is common in film. They've obviously put a fair amount of effort into researching them properly.

Lessstressedhemum · 23/01/2019 10:06

I've only ever been in it for Jamie Blush

Brianna is just so high maintenance. She could have forgiven Bonnet without making a big show of telling him. However, that sets up the whole future story line between them.
Roger is an idiot and he doesn't really get better. I've never really bought into their relationship. Even in the books it a bit implausible, to be honest. Sometimes I think that Brianna doesn't even like him, never mind love him. I just don't find them that convincing or compelling. And his sudden calling to the ministry is a load of bullocks. He just likes the status and respect it brings him from his C18th protestant community. Especially as he is surrounded by Roman Catholics.

The prices is an idiot, too. Although, to be fair, he puts his faith before his life, which I do understand. It's a theological argument, isn't it? He feels fallen from Grace because he sinned and broke his vows. Therefore he can no longer perform the sacraments without polluting both them and the other people involved. So he can't christen his baby because he believes that would damn her to hell. There seems to be no room for God's forgiveness in his theology, though. I don't know enough about Catholic theology, but, at that time, protestants believed in double predestination. So you were either damned or saved before you were even born and nothing you could do could change that. So I don't know how any of it hangs together in church doctrine or dogma. It's all a bit extreme, though.

I wish they had made more use of Jamie and Claire this season. They feature much more prominently in the books than they have in the show this time. It's a real shame because their's is the relationship that the whole thing is built around. If we don't get Jamie helping at the birth of brianna's child, the writers will have a fight on their hands to find a way to heal the broken relationship between him and Brianna in as strong a way. Also, I miss his pecs (very shallow, I know).

Yes, I can’t fault the presentation of Jamie & Claire that we have been shown this season (other than that Claire needs to have a little more energy in her delivery sometimes), and like just how relaxed Jamie and Claire are together. But alongside what we have seen already it would have been good to have seen more and to have had a few more reminders of their humour and just how into each other they are.

mateysmum · 24/01/2019 19:08

My thoughts exactly lessStressed. Building a community at Frasers Ridge is a central theme of the book and important for the development of Jamie as its leader.
Also miss the loving domesticity that Jamie and Claire start to build. actually just miss Jamie.

legolimb · 24/01/2019 22:52

Is it true that Wilmington was settled in the main by Scots?

Ì spent a few days there 5 years ago so it's interesting history.

crumpet · 25/01/2019 08:02

Legolimb apparently so. There was a huge migration to the US in this period - I read somewhere that in a 10 year period more than 50k Scots settled in the US slap bang in the Jamie/Claire era, with many coming through Wilmington before settling in the area. One of the things I have enjoyed the most about the Outlander story is that i’ve been spurred to read around the subject - taking me back to my History graduate roots!

Lessstressedhemum · 25/01/2019 23:46

I think that it's quite likely. After the Rising of 1745, there was a mass exodus from Scotland to the new world. Thousands of people either were deported or fled the awful situation in the country. Parts of America were settled en masse by Scottish emigrants.

Most of the posh Perthshire county set made their money from sugar, tobacco and slaves - the Scrimgours and the Wedderburns, it is all dirty money. Mega respectable now - time really is the greatest bleach.

quirkychick · 26/01/2019 13:14

crumpet I gave up history at the first chance due to a crap teacher Sad. However, I went on to due Literature and so have ended up reading lots more history due to fiction Smile.

A big thank you again to Lessstressed for your Elderberry and Ginger Syrup recipe. It's helping all the winter bugs in the quirky household. I can dream of cooking it up in a log cabin in the mountains...

SenecaFalls · 26/01/2019 14:31

That coastal area of North Carolina was heavily settled by people from Argyll. My Scottish ancestors were among them. There are a lot of place names in North Carolina that reflect the heavily Scottish immigration, including a Scotland County.

Macaroonmayhem · 28/01/2019 11:22

Well, I enjoyed that. I’ve not read the books so I had no expectations or prior knowledge. Looooooong time to wait for the next series though...☹️

Myfanwyprice · 28/01/2019 12:10

I usually watch on a Monday afternoon when I get in from work and everyone else is at school/work, but they’re all ill and at home today, so I might have to wait!

Lessstressedhemum · 28/01/2019 12:30

I enjoyed it, too. I'm sad that they missed the birth scene out as it was so important to healing Jamie and brianna's relationship but other than that it was great. Roger was just as big a douche as I remember him being. RR did a great job.
Didn't Ian look so full of joy after he had run the gauntlet? All while Jamie's heart is breaking 😢 I was so glad that they didn't end the season on Brianna and Roger. That would have completely burst me.
It's a long, long wait for season 5. How will I get my Jamie fix now?😭

I wonder whether we’ll see anything before Easter next year at the earliest.

Thought this was another good episode, and I liked the ending - thank goodness we seem to be avoiding Herman Husband and replacing him with Murtagh (and as an aside Murtagh/Jocasta were ace!). The HH storyline was one (of several) which never had any resonance for me in the books, instantly forgettable.

I was a bit concerned when I read that we weren’t to get the Jamie/Bree birth scene, but didn’t miss it as I was watching. It would have been nice to have had a bit more time with them all as a family though.

I have to admit that Young Ian has never been a particular favourite - love the actor but he is a bit too pantomimey for my taste.

Rog didn’t do a bad job this season - not quite sure why he got so much hate. I listened to a bit of The season 2 finale the other day, where he is first introduced and remembered why I liked him so much - the actor has done so well with him as the character has developed so much since those early scenes. Very interested to see Roger next season. And more Jamie and Claire...

Am planning to do a full season 4 rewatch at some point, it will be good to see how it hangs together as a whole. Overall my take so far is how well they grounded the sense of place - almost as solid as season 1 Scotland.

Holidayshopping · 28/01/2019 13:31

Someone said on one of the Outlander FB groups that the tv voice over said that season 5 will be back on our screens this year.

I find that hard to believe if they haven’t started filming it yet.

Lessstressedhemum · 28/01/2019 14:19

I think we'll be lucky to see anything before autumn 2020, tbh. They start filming next month and that'll take till near enough the end of the year. And then all the post filming editing etc. The publicity and what have you will take months.
I hope season 5 has more Jamie in it than this one. His character really grows in book five.
