I don't have a problem with Ian and Bonnet looking similar. So far we've seen Bonnet mostly in the dark, so maybe he'll look more different in the daylight!

He is supposed to be a bit charming with the Irish blarney as well as a ruthless killer, he lures people to trust him just enough to get his wicked way. It will be interesting to see if the actor can pull off the evil side of him convincingly.

Just finished episode one and was a bit underwhelmed... I think it's taken me 3 whole seasons to realise I don't actually like Claire all that much, and now with the weird greyish wig them as a couple just seems even more unbelievable than it did in Season 1.

I agree with pp who said if this was the first season I'd have flicked it over, but I'm invested now so will follow it through.

Also loved Rolo! He looks like a Caledonian Wolfalike which would be very fitting with the show, we have a 4 month old pup who is very similar- mix of GSD/ Husky/ few other bits and bobs ☺.

Well I've watched it again this evening and it was actually better on the second viewing. I think it helped that DH didn't laugh as much as I thought he would since it's always been my thing rather than his.
I'm sure it's going to get much better and there's lots I'm curious to see, at the moment mostly who will play Duncan Innes part or how they work round that, although I think it would be quite easy to ignore that storyline until next season.
And also why Bonnet was telling Claire about his drowning dream, that's completely different in the book and I'm curious as to why they've brought it forward.

Yy, the loadsa trees was very funny, as was when Jamie told Ian he didn't know what his mother would say, Ian replied that his mother would be saying it in Scotland .

I assume bringing the drowning bit forward is helping to set the scene for Stephen Bonnet's character. Isn't he supposed to have been sacrificed for a building in Inverness but escapes? All a bit of foreshadowing, rings, drowning...

I'm not sure about 18th century physique, but a lot of men would surely have been quite lean and muscly due to hard physical work.

I loved the ending but I really wish they hadn't bothered with the music. I think it did take away from CB's performance which was otherwise excellent.

Thermodynamics scene seemed a different pace/intensity from previous love scenes.

I agree with those who weren't blown away with the episode. Not quite sure what I was expecting but I wasn't overly impressed and as others have said, if this was the first episode I'd seen I wouldn't bother with any more.

I cringed at the singing in the tarvern. SH was doing his best 'smell the fart' acting (as someone pointed out on the other thread). In fact, I don't think either CB or SH's hearts are in this any longer. CB seems to have gone back to the woodeness of S1.

I also didn't like the music over the scene at the end either. It felt out of place and distracting.

I can't remember why they ended up in Jamaica.
And who's who - Jamie's nephew and who is the young couple?
Were they on the river boat too? Trying to figure out who would have been killed.

Floral They ended up in Jamaica because young Ian was kidnapped and taken to be sold as a slave in Jamaica. Jamie and Claire promised Ian's parents they would find him and bring him back.

Ian is the son of Jamie's sister Jenny who lives at Lallybroch with her husband (also Ian), Young Ian was bored at Lallybroch, and would much rather be with Jamie and Claire.

The young couple is Fergus, Jamie's adopted son who he found in a Paris brothel in S2 and Marsali who is Jamie's stepdaughter from his marriage to Laoghaire. They stayed in Wilmington as Marsali is pregnant.

Young Ian is still alive. He is pretty important in future books, but we saw Bonnet cut Lindsey's throat.

Well, I rewatched it again, today, and think it improves with rewatching. I think I like the portrayal of Bonnet, appearing charming and silvertongued, but obviously turning e.g. shouting at Claire for her rings. I think he'll be a different kind of villain to BJR, which will be interesting. In usual Outlander style, everything seems happy and then something happens. Not sure about the new style theme tune, but that may grow on me.

Next episode must be Riverrun and Jocasta.

The new arrangement of the theme tune really grates on me. The whole bluegrass/Appalachian vibe doesn't really suit the song. I know that bluegrass has its roots in Scottish/Irish folk music but it just didn't gel, imo.

Still, that's such a small annoyance that it's negligible, really.

I think my favourite bit was the end scene. I thought it was very effective using music and removing the voices. It made the scene seem more violent and painful, I think.

I've not read the books so don't know how they've altered the plot etc (and what Fergus and Marsali die?????) but thought I'd throw in my thoughts:

Ending was so brutal but I think the strongest bit in the episode. And i liked the music
CGI was dreadful, wigs remain dreadful
I'll be watching but it's not as good as season 1, nothing has been 😢😢

The pub sing song was soooo awkward and I didn't think it ran true for Jamie to sing as he can't hold a tune (I've flicked through book 1 but I'm certain that's show knowledge)

I liked the humour, loadsa trees, young Ian's comment about Jenny. We need more of that

I had already heard about the end, so had expected it. I thought it was effective, but don't know whether I'd feel the same if it had been a surprise. I liked the juxtaposition of the American dream with the mention of slaves and violence of a new country with the music.

I think the instrumental could have been more effective, the tune is so recognisable. CB was really amazing, trying to swallow the rings.

Bit heavy on the foreshadowing though.

Claire’s distress was well acted-it’s a shame that ten seconds after she says, ‘all I need in-the world is this ring’, it’s nicked!!

There was an awful lot of foreshadowing. Maybe they are scene setting so they can tighten the whole thing up? It's hard, sometimes, to acknowledge the violence and downright savagery that went into building America or, I suppose, any country. I think they did a good job of facing up to that. The whole peaceful idyll of the river, the friendship of the captain and waterman, the family all asleep after a day filled with tenderness. And then it's all ripped apart in an orgy of violence and greed. It just makes it even more shocking.

I think that's Outlander in a nutshell, though, isn't it? The 18th century setting allows lots of exciting shocking events to stand in Jamie and Claire's way. S1 certainly has plenty of violent events as they travel through the Highlands, and that carries on through the seasons. Isn't that one of the reasons Claire doesn't want Brianna to come back through the stones with her, as it's so much less safer?

Oh aye, it's a violent tale set in a violent time. It wouldn't be the same if they just lived on a farm, raising goats and feeding chickens!

I suppose I like the fact that it doesn't glamorise the violence, although it uses it to dramatic effect to keep you reading, watching, obsessing...

On a lighter note, Jamie was impressively quick in whipping his trousers down...
