A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

I've been a Roger fan until this episode, but he really did behave like a dick this time.

GrungeSponge · 31/12/2018 23:10

I was an emotional wreck this episode! Lizzie's "Ye have my hand here and my ear..." set me off right at the beginning! And then I loved the reunion scenes.

Seriously though has Roger had a personality transplant this season? He was always very kind and genial in previous seasons. He took in his stride about Claire and Jamie and was always very sweet to Bree. This season though...? Acting like a right tool!

Lessstressedhemum · 31/12/2018 23:28

He is a bit of a twally, but, I suppose, he was born in 1940 and raised by an older CoS Presbyterian minister. He won't have the mindset of a modern man.

Sam looked fine this episode and Brianna and he have matching hair. Sophie does actually look like a cross between Jamie and Claire with her new hairdo. It was all so sweet. A nice bit of happiness for a change, in spite of all the horror. Jamie's face when he realised who she was had me in bits.

Loved this one, it was my favourite in ages. Brilliant acting from SH, CB and Sophie. Loved the look on Jamie's face watching Brianna sleep Smile

Agree with a PP re Roger having a personality transplant, his behaviour just doesn't track from last season and feels jarring.

Todayillbebetter · 01/01/2019 16:56

May I join you?
I have watched from the outset and lurked on this thread since the beginning ...
I was completely enthralled by season 1 and 2... I still enjoyed the rest but this season is feeling all very Dr Quinn Medicine Woman to me....Sad
I'm desperate for them all to go back to Scotland and get back to the original feel of the program. I have only read the first two books but I assume that's never going to happen??

Lessstressedhemum · 01/01/2019 17:20

No, it's not. Sadly, except or a wee journey in book seven or eight, they are in the states to stay.

Haha! Yes, it is. I've only dipped into the last two episodes, I'm just not feeling this series at all. And YY, to whoever said Roger needs to grow his beard back.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimall · 01/01/2019 17:38

Also, I take it Jamie still hasn't put his kilt back on?

Todayillbebetter · 01/01/2019 17:45

Oh dear.... I've even booked a holiday to Scotland for the summer.
I just miss what it was you know? I have to accept that things change and Jamie is still pretty hot even without his kilt. In my mind Jamie would never have strayed far from Scotland - it's in his blood.

I will never stop watching though. I'm invested in it for life now.

gamerwidow · 01/01/2019 21:12

I'm finding Claire really jarring this season and I cant put my finger on why. I usually really like both Claire as a character and CB as an actor but I've just found her really irritating this time round.

ballsdeep · 01/01/2019 21:17

I'm just not loving it this season and it's such a shame. Usually I can't wait to watch it but now I'm just a bit meh about it.
Do Brianna and Rodger get back together? I haven't read all the books

Lessstressedhemum · 01/01/2019 21:51

Yes, they do but only after Roger goes through some awful stuff.

WineGumption · 01/01/2019 22:32

Can I join in? Have been watching avidly since the start and agree it seems to have wandered off the boil a bit in terms of what made me love it initially.

Also, while the actor is extremely sexy IRL I just don't find Roger even slightly attractive which made the love scenes just a bit meh for me personally. Bizarre.
(Jamie's fringe is getting a bit Deirdre Barlow as well.)

I actually started watching the series from the beginning again as I missed the earlier feel!

DryWhiteagainW · 01/01/2019 23:21

Today Jamie actually does wear his kilt again later on, but for special occasions only
Did anyone else notice Murtagh’s tweedy kilt thing worn over trousers ? I liked that a lot.
Also we haven’t discussed knitted shawls yet....I liked Bree’s high necked one with bottons.
Poor Roger, he’s not coping with 18C at all. Really need him in boots.

DryWhiteagainW · 01/01/2019 23:21

Oh, and I need to see a bit more of Fergus

wigglybeezer · 01/01/2019 23:31

The Knitwear annoys me, it's so inauthentic! I'm a bit of a textile nerd and have a spinning wheel, you couldn't make chunky yarn like that with 18th century methods, very thin yarn ( by today's standards) was the norm, it went further. They would have layered up thin garments and shawls, because they tended to add and remove layers as they heated up working, getting damp and sweaty was regarded as v bad for health. All the chunky garter stitch stuff in brown looks like something from my Mum's 1970s knitting magazines!

GrungeSponge · 02/01/2019 01:15

Oh thank goodness Jamie wears his kilt again...it really is what's missing from this season.

And yes while I do enjoy the knitwear, I wasn't sure infinity scarfs and snoods were a thing in the 18th Century?

Florabella · 02/01/2019 09:34

I'm not sure he will be wearing his kilt again in the show, as he did wear it in book 4, but so far they have changed that in the show.

I loved Ep 9. Beautiful meeting and hopefully Sophie Skelton has managed to silence her many critics with her performances over the last 2 episodes. It was taken at a lovely slow pace, then what a contrast to the last five minutes - that was brutal!!!!

wigglybeezer · 02/01/2019 12:14

I think the original costume designer has retired now and maybe her replacement is being less authentic on purpose?

I did quite enjoy this episode, glad not to see more naked Rogering!

DryWhiteagainW · 02/01/2019 21:27

But isn’t the costume lady, Terri what’s-her-name, the producer’s wife?

Knitwear annoys you wiggly ? Stop it!

I’m always shocked and 🙄 at the bloody Outlander book reading snobs who criticise casting on the show so quickly without giving it a chance. I think the casting (even CB who doesn’t look at all like book claire) is spot on. SS is great, better even than the horrendous book B, on the show.

WineCheeseSleep · 02/01/2019 23:43

I think Sophie is great too and she really looks like Clare and Jamie's daughter.

wigglybeezer · 02/01/2019 23:59

I don't mind the casting, I've got used to it, there's always an adjustment between how I imagine characters and their screen versions anyway.
The Knitwear only mildly annoys me, I find it distracting because the rest of the costumes are pretty good. I can guess why they do it, much quicker and cheaper to knit chunky items, they could have asked me, I'm just up the road, maybe I should volunteer!
I used to read Terri's blog, a good read but I understand she didn't come over for this series due to wanting to be around for her children before they leave home.
As a book fan ( but not an uncritical one) I actually find I look forward to seeing the craft of how the writers adapt the books.
My favourite way to enjoy Outlander is however, the books as read on Audible.

JessieMcJessie · 03/01/2019 01:25

I’m sorry but for me the moment when Jamie met Brianna was pure Joey Tribbiani “Smell the Fart” acting from SH!

He did get better later on though...

Todayillbebetter · 03/01/2019 07:17

Casting has always been spot on in my mind but then as I haven't read many books I don't need to be pernikerty..
I saw a mini interview with SS and Richard Rankin. I had no idea he was so attractive. Outlander really played that down ....I can see now why the show seemed to be recreating Claire and Jamie's wedding night scene. But it did not quite translate and I actually cringed through it. I have no idea why I found it so uncomfortable except Roger was looking at naked Brianna like a quarter pounder.

Todayillbebetter · 03/01/2019 07:18

I think it was romantic though!
