A new adventure awaits us in the New World. It's going to be savage!

I agree. I don't remember Roger coming across as controlling in the books. In the show I just think Brianna should run the other way!! They just don't seem like they fit together

Lessstressedhemum · 29/12/2018 14:10

Roger is a pratt in the books, but not really controlling. Brianna on the other hand is a bossy, manipulative, controlling pain in the backside. Rogers behaviour when he finds out that she has been raped and is pregnant is utterly appalling, though. Can't be doing with either of them.

I don’t think Roger’s behaviour is appalling. He has been sold into slavery and physically and mentally abused for months because he was wrongly accused of raping her. Then when he gets back his supposed to adjust to the shock of being a father overnight.
Under the circumstances I’d be tempted to fuck off back to civilisation too. He doesn’t though, he stands by Brianna and the baby even though it costs him everything.

Holidayshopping · 29/12/2018 15:14

I thought they were both being ridiculous during that argument, tbh!

I’m not looking forward to Roger’s next instalment though-I’ve seen the ‘cross Jamie’ face photos on FB!

Lessstressedhemum · 29/12/2018 18:28

Oh, I know how terrible a time Roger has, I just think that his attitude to Brianna being raped was awful.

I think DG missed an opportunity with his character. She is so busy making bad things happen to him that he is another on she doesn't develop to full potential. It's like all her effort went into forming Jamie and, to a slightly lesser extent, Claire, and she didn't have anything left for the others.

I've been putting off watching this week because I've read how awful the rape scene was to film... Chat on here seems more annoyed with Rik Rankin. Eek. Think I'll give it a try tonight then.

Spongeface · 29/12/2018 18:55

Oops never mind! DP has just reminded me I got thru black jack in prison with j and that was so hard to view... Here we go then.

gamerwidow · 29/12/2018 19:26

That's shock as much as anything else though imo.

blibblibs · 30/12/2018 11:55

I do think they've made Roger an even bigger arse in the show though, although he doesn't really improve in any of the subsequent books.
You'll be OK with the rape scenes gamerwidow, it's not anything like Wentworth.
I say every Sunday that this is the week I won't read spoilers but I always do! Seems mostly positive this week though, but I've no idea when I'll get to watch it tomorrow 😔

quirkychick · 31/12/2018 10:20

Well, that was emotional! I may have something in my eye cried a bit. Poor Brianna at the beginning, then Jamie and Brianna, the ring! Poor Roger at the end, but Jamie's right, Roger should have seen Brianna safely back to the tavern.

I definitely like show Brianna much better than book Brianna. I like Sophie Skelton much better this Season, I really wasn't sure before but I thought the last two episodes she acted really well, with strong emotional content.

I loved having them all around the table in the cabin.

Piffpaffpoff · 31/12/2018 11:32

I got a lot of dust in my eyes at both reunions. Thought (most of) the acting in this week’s ep was very good indeed. Poor Roger at the end though. Whoops.

TheNavigator · 31/12/2018 11:40

I thought the actor playing Brianna was v good post rape scene - when she dazedly picked up her boots and went up the stairs it was v affecting. I also thought Stepehn Bonnet was great, the ideal mix of charming, unpredictable and threatening. Roger is an enormous bell end and Brianna could do so much better.

crumpet · 31/12/2018 14:00

It was great to watch Claire observing Brianna, aware that there was a bit more to it than just missing Roger.

Agree Lessstressedhemum, that DG fails to fully flesh out a number of key characters, which is what the show has done so well in a number of cases. Roger has been a bit of an arse, but Brianna was not much better - they definitely pushed each other’s buttons. Have hopes for them both though.

Loved the reunions, and the moments between each of the parents with Brianna. Holy hell Jamie can pack a punch though - such a contrast to his more tender moments in this episode.

Lessstressedhemum · 31/12/2018 14:19

He's a big, strong, fit man who trained as a mercenary, Crumpet. I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of him.

That was a roller-coaster ride. I think I had something in my eye. I thought everyone was good this time, especially Sam and Sophie Skelton. She is definitely much better this season. She has had some really hard, emotional stuff in the last two episodes. Sam did really well with the juxtaposition of tender, loving father and vengeful, protective father. The next episode or two should be quite difficult.

It's going to get rough and tough for Roger now. I do feel sorry for him even though he is a complete wassock.

Stupid New Year celebrations! Going to have to wait until tomorrow to see this 😢

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 31/12/2018 14:38

Roger needs to grow his beard back, that's all.

Claire was a bit too simpery this week but it was nice to see her with Jamie and Brie at last.

quirkychick · 31/12/2018 15:19

All that not communicating... Brianna asking Claire not to say it was Stephen Bonnet, Jamie asking Lizzie not to tell Claire and Brianna, resulting in Jamie thinking it's Roger. In the books isn't the mix up due partly to Brianna thinking he's Wakefield, Roger going by MacKenzie now.

Outlander has definitely gone back to being an emotional rollercoaster (just as we like it). I loved that bit with Brianna saying "Can't you tell [I'm your daughter]?" and Jamie tearing up. I loved lots of it this week, tbh. Nice touch with Jamie teaching Brianna some Gaelic and the green hair ribbon in Brianna's hair. I want her frontier hunting outfit.

Stephen Bonnet is a very mercurial psychopath, switching from one dangerous mood to the next. Very well played, I thought. BJR seemed much more calculated in his cruelty.

HelloMist · 31/12/2018 16:56

Haven't read the last few posts yet as haven't been able to watch the newest episode yet. But I just thought with this season's thread being so much quieter Sad somebody here might want to try the podcast I've been enjoying for some more thoughts after watching? It's a husband-wife duo: the wife is a book and show fan but the husband only watches begrudgingly, which makes it quite funny. If you're interested, look up Loinlander podcast.Smile

JennyfromtheBroch · 31/12/2018 17:32

I just want the Jamie&Claire show tbh- not necessarily the gratuity of the wedding episode but I so prefer their relationship to B&R.

Having said that, I thought Jamie and Bree were very touching together and the actors looked quite similar, whereas I'd previously thought they weren't alike at all.

DryWhiteagainW · 31/12/2018 20:43

Loved it (have watched the episode a number of times today Blush )
Poor Roger. On many levels. Wish they’d give him better clothes, I hate those cut off trousers and bad hair. Needs some knee boots like J.
I thought S Bonnet turned into Jack Sparrow at times Hmm
Love Fraser ridge.
Love Murtagh.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 31/12/2018 20:50

I know I was complaining about the excess of coincidences and bumping into each other, but I was very pleased to see Brianna find Jamie and Claire so easily. She needed her mum.

Bree with her curly hair suddenly looks much more like Jamie (and Claire)

LonelyOversharer · 31/12/2018 21:05

I loved this one. Bloody hell SH was looking such a beautiful man in this episode!

He does not look old enough to be Bree's da though. Really enjoyed the episode. Have forgotten most of the book plot now, so watching it is a bit easier and less nit picky for me.

At least Jamie didn't sell him to the Indians. If Ian does it and then swaps places later on, it won't be on J.

blibblibs · 31/12/2018 21:45

Loved this one too. Ended up watching it on my phone so looking forward to watching again on the big screen with DH.
I thought they'd aged Claire really well this episode.

Shazafied · 31/12/2018 22:06

Cried when Bree found her mum and gave her a big hug !! Poor old Roger..... what will happen ?!!

Agree Jamie and Bree do look alike although too close in age x

Shazafied · 31/12/2018 22:06

I say poor old Roger , he’s a bit of a cock.
