Apparently the QM was very difficult with Elizabeth in the immediate years following the King’s death. She didn’t like the fact that her daughter “outranked” her and that she now had to walk behind her rather than in front.

CaveMum · 19/12/2017 10:10

Oh and I’d been wracking my brains trying to remember where I’d seen the actress who plays QM before. She’s Colonel Forster’s wife from the BBC Pride and Prejudice - Lydia’s silly little friend!

Rainatnight · 19/12/2017 10:20

She was also in Dr Foster - the friend who lived across the road.

Blimey, I just saw the Duke of Windsor one last night. They didn't pull any punches by showing those photos at the end, did they? I had no idea (I didn't grow up here so there's lots about the Royals I don't know).

JosBoys · 19/12/2017 11:35

The Duke of Windsor episode was great. I'm only sad that it means we probably won't see him again as the actor is brilliant.

Rainatnight · 19/12/2017 12:03

He is good, isn't he. He just reeks unlike-ability.

The only actor I'm not keen on is the one who plays Macmillan. He's a bit wishy washy. Or was Macmillan himself meant to be like that?

southeastdweller · 19/12/2017 12:04

I doubt they’d resist the opportunity to depict the last time the Queen saw him, which was ten days before he died in 1972. We’ll never know of course what happened but I can imagine Peter Morgan would write a humdinger of a scene based on his speculation.

Talking of McMillian I was shocked about his wifes affair. I looked up the man she had it with.
He's certainly had an interesting life!

Oh and I’d been wracking my brains trying to remember where I’d seen the actress who plays QM before.

She also played Queen Victoria in the TV movie Victoria and Albert in 2001.

www.imdb.com/title/tt0262995/

She was also in the 1995 film of Persuasion (as Henrietta Musgrove) which is my favorite Jane Austen adaptation ever.

southeastdweller · 19/12/2017 14:10

Dorothy MacMillan’s lover was connected to the Krays. Ronnie Kray used to procure rent boys for him.

I think I've seen her in another Austen adaptation too - maybe the 90s Mansfield Park?

The actor playing the Duke of Windsor also plays King Leopold of Belgium in the current Victoria and Prince Charles in The Queen.

Half the fun is spotting actors who've been in other shows - I've spotted several Downton and Game of Thrones alumni!

diddl · 19/12/2017 19:20

Victoria Hamilton (QM) was also in Larkrise to Candleford.

ohmyblob · 21/12/2017 22:56

I enjoyed it but I did think it's a bit manipulative as the Queen comes off as quite a sympathetic character. I wondered if that was the trade-off - Netflix could be flexible with the truth if, in the end, she comes out of it well?

MissEliza · 22/12/2017 00:35

Rain I've always thought McMillan was a well liked figure in his day. I'm sure his nickname was SuperMac. I was sad to read about his wife's infidelity.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/12/2017 07:20

Wow, I just read about Macmillan's wife. Her long-time lover was apparently bi and is rumoured to have been shagging Ronnie Kray!

laudanum · 22/12/2017 18:10

I can't stand the royals, so I've been hate watching both series. Definitely enjoyed watching Margaret having some fun though.

southeastdweller · 05/01/2018 18:45

It was announced today that Helena Bonham Carter is going to play PM for seasons 3 and 4. Not entirely happy with this choice as HBC seems too ‘mumsy’ for Margaret.

Sairelou · 05/01/2018 19:16

I'm actually quite interested in seeing how she plays Thatcher! I think she's a fantastic actress. Though whenever I think of HBC now I get an image of Bellatrix Lestrange Grin

southeastdweller · 05/01/2018 19:54

Thatcher? No, she’s playing Princess Margaret!

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 05/01/2018 20:08

Lol at HBC playing Thatcher!!! Maybe they'll cast Ralph Fiennes as Prince Phillip and it'll be a Harry Potter reunion!

theredjellybean · 05/01/2018 20:56

Can I join in? Please.
Binge watched season 1 trying to ration season 2

I am particularly impressed with how the actor playing the Duke of Windsor resembles Prince Charles today as apparently they did have a strong family likeness and the young Prince Charles really looks like him. Great casting.

YesThisIsMe · 05/01/2018 20:59

HBC rarely plays straightforwardly “pretty” roles but she does have fabulous bone structure. I think she could be a very good mid-period Margaret, getting up to all sorts with a wide assortment of celebrities and demi-mondaines

QueenOfTheAndals · 05/01/2018 21:18

@theredjellybean The same actor actually played Charles in The Queen.

LascellesMoustache · 05/01/2018 21:24

Ah I've found you all! Good thread, I love all the extra bits of information on here,I'm also Wikipediaing people as I watch the series.

Currently got one more episode to watch, I really wish I hadnt binged watched now as will feel sad when I'm done. And no more series until 2019?! Feels so long away!

My favourite character is definitely Lascelles, he's amazing! Great acting and just whenever a scene comes on with him you just know it will be good. Listening to all the ways he says 'no' to the queen is great.

Also agree with people who said the written mum looks too young too, it's a shame they cast younger women and can't just be more realistic

JosBoys · 05/01/2018 21:26

I think HBC will be a great Princess Margaret. She's beautiful and plays 'wild' very well.
I can't wait to see who plays Prince Philip.

Figgygal · 05/01/2018 21:29

Totally missed the HBC Announcement
It's who is playing I'm waiting for
