southeast, agree, the Queen seemed to be on good terms with him right to the end. He was at Margaret's funeral too so perhaps they were one of those couples who get on better after their divorce. Margaret didn't have the longevity of her mother and sister but perhaps it was lifestyle-related.

I'm not sure Snowden was the type to settle down - didn't his second marriage end when his wife found out he'd fathered a child with a much-younger journalist? He would've been well into his sixties by then.

JosBoys · 17/12/2017 13:27

I did feel a bit sorry for Margaret. She obviously had bad taste in men and she let her relationships define her.
It's odd because as diddl says, presumably she could have found a more fulfilling role for herself. But she seemed happy to have a life of parties and social occasions rather than duty and responsibility. Maybe in a family where the first-born is groomed to head the country, the second-born will always feel they have more freedom and rebel against responsibility. Although Princess Anne rather bucks that trend. Grin

diddl · 17/12/2017 14:26

Alex Jennings is great! Wonder if "Uncle David" really was so thoroughly loathsome?

Just out of interest & sorry for being OT, where does the money for Anne, Andrew & Edward come from?

diddl · 17/12/2017 17:05

Who is this with Claire Foy?

Can't find her on Imdb.

Cocolepew · 17/12/2017 17:08

I think its Lizzy McInnerny, she plays Bobo

southeastdweller · 17/12/2017 17:08

Her name is Lizzie Mcinnery.

OP posts:
diddl · 17/12/2017 17:14

Thank you.

Tim Mcinnerny's sister.

Sawher in something recently & wanted to check what & couldn't find her character in imdb listings!

SenecaFalls · 17/12/2017 22:43

Come to think of it, I wonder why the series hasn't done more with her relationship with Bobo? Supposedly they were very close; she was one of the few people outside the family who called her Lilibet. Maybe they will develop this in the next series.

TabbyMack · 18/12/2017 02:33

Regarding Margaret not coming over well, I don't think she's meant to. PM was quite unpleasant in many ways...imperious, rude and demanding. But there's a reason for that, and Vanessa Kirby demonstrates it really brilliantly, I think. I certainly felt compassion for her even when she was sneering at people.

I also think the Queen and Queen Mum have their moments of unpleasantness in this series too...their incredibly snobbery over "common people" coming to tea was not comfortable to watch but is probably a fair reflection of their feelings at the time.

I like the fact that this show does not try and soft focus everything. Will be interesting when they get to Di & Fergie.

QueenOfTheAndals · 18/12/2017 07:43

I'd like to know if the Queen Mum really did call Prince Philip's mother "the Hun Nun". Although The Crown used dramatic licence by having her appear at the wedding in a nun's habit. She wore a habit for the queens coronation but dressed much the same as other guests for the wedding. She was a very interesting woman, far more so than the Queen Mum!

MissEliza · 18/12/2017 09:35

PM was apparently an unpleasant person although she raised two lovely children. In a way I blame the royal family. They gave her an inferior education compared to her sister and gave her no role. Her life was quite meaningless. Moreover they didn't exactly try to help her find a suitable husband. If your dsis's heart had been broken, wouldn't you have tried to introduce her to some 'nice' boys. This should particularly the case when marriage and a family of was all that was expected of her.
Ironically Lord Snowdon was very charitable. He went straight to Aberfan after the disaster and one reporter found him making tea in a tiny house for a couple who had lost a child. He was hands on during that crisis.

diddl · 18/12/2017 09:42

The bit about Philip building the wall alone at Gordonstoun seemed ridiculous.

Matt Smith has made him so hateful to me that even that episode about his childhood didn't make me feel sorry for him!

Rainatnight · 18/12/2017 12:26

I've just watched the Lord Altrincham episode and the Queen and her mother come across so badly at the end! Waiting to go in to meet the commoners and absolutely horrified at the prospect. Quite brutal, I thought.

southeastdweller · 18/12/2017 12:33

The QM was apparently one of the worst Royal snobs and there’s more than one source to say she was racist. I think she herself said ‘I’m not as nice as people think I am’.

"I've just watched the Lord Altrincham episode and the Queen and her mother come across so badly at the end! "

Yes, & as ever, nothing was learned from it!

That was 1957 I think & then 20+ yrs later, it's still thought that an titled virgin is needed for CharlesHmm

Rainatnight · 18/12/2017 14:03

Yes, I had the same thought when I was thinking about the Queen's 'annus horribilis'

The thing is, I'm never quite sure how much of it is accurate, and if it is, how are they getting away with it?? We don't know that that conversation took place, of course. And I'm not sure why the Palace isn't hopping up and down at the suggestion that it did!

diddl · 18/12/2017 14:28

I think because it's not being presented as factual the Palace are happy enough to just not get involved.

It's probably because they would consider it beneath them though to have seen a Netflix show!Grin

southeastdweller · 18/12/2017 14:35

Also because there hasn’t been anything shown that’s been seriously damaging to the Royals.

I'm sure I've also read though that PC has said that it has been exaggerated about how bad his time at Gordonstoun was.

Also that he attended Hill House & Cheam & never really made friends at either-so difficult personality or other kids/parents just didn't know how to approach his postion rather than just him?

It's not bad PR for him though, is it?

Also the bit about him sending his own boys to Eton.

In the programme though-him cuddling up to the protection guy after the challenge & going straight to see staff at BP-heartbreaking!

Although if the challenge was a team thing-why was he left behind?

So yes, big bag of salt needed, methinks!

southeastdweller · 18/12/2017 15:53

Two years into his time at Gordonstoun he wrote a letter to the QM saying it was ‘hell, literal hell’. The writer William Boyd was there at the same time and confirmed the horrid time PC had there. The bullying is also documented in Jonathan Dimbleby’s 1994 biography, which Charles gave his go-ahead to.

Who knows, if the Queen had stood up to Philip and withdrawn Charles, maybe he wouldn’t have felt pressured to get with Diana?

OP posts:
diddl · 18/12/2017 16:21

Yes, although there are I think speeces that he has given later saying that it wasn't so bad.

That said, it felt bad to him at the time & it's not as if there were no alternatives available!

I think I also read that PP mentioned media intrusion as a reason-was that even a thing in the 60s??!!

"Charles then attended two of his father's former schools, Cheam Preparatory School in Berkshire, England, followed by Gordonstoun in the north-east of Scotland.[16] Though he reportedly characterised the latter school, noted for its especially rigorous curriculum, as "Colditz in kilts",[17] Charles subsequently praised Gordonstoun, stating it had taught him "a great deal about myself and my own abilities and disabilities. It taught me to accept challenges and take the initiative." In a 1975 interview, he said he was "glad" he had attended Gordonstoun and that the "toughness of the place" was "much exaggerated"." I've just finished this series, I was a bit disappointed that there was only 10 episodes.

I'm very much looking forward to watching Olivia Coleman portray the Queen, although Claire Foy has done a fantastic job, OC has a lot to live up to!

I too would like to see David Tennant as Prince Phillip, but that's just because I love his English accent Grin

ManicUnicorn · 19/12/2017 09:41

I've said this on here before, but my late grandmother was in service before the war and met someone who had worked either with or for the Queen Mum, I can't remember which, but apparently my GM always maintained that the Queen Mum was, and I quote ' a bitch'.

GM never swore, and like most people of her generation was pro royal so to hear her refer to the Queen Mum as a bitch always tickled me.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/12/2017 10:03

I think I've seen you say that on another thread! She was very good at manipulating the media though - a precursor of Diana perhaps.
