Apparently Margaret was very intelligent and said she regretted not being sent to school and properly educated. Perhaps that was the driving force behind her unhappiness.

OlennasWimple · 10/12/2017 18:30

We are binge watching it today!

Yy to Matt Smith looking like Prince Harry (with the beard on the boat, right?)

The actress playing the Queen Mum is a great look alike for her, but not old enough - she's only 13 years older than Claire Foy. I think that's why she jars a little

Love the Yara from GoT cameos (she's Lord Altringham's secretary). We watch The Crown with IMDB open to look up who is thingy and whatchmecallit from that show Wink

In this series, I kind of dread the Queen Mother scenes because I also think Victoria Hamilton is too young for the part. I’m also a bit annoyed that Matthew Goode is playing Tony Snowdon-Jones as MG looks nothing like him and isn’t young enough to fully convince here (both Margaret and Snowdon were 28 when they met). I wish I wasn’t so literal!

I've watched them all 🙈 totally binged on Friday & Saturday.

Absolutely LOVED it. It's so beautifully cast and shot - Claire Foy and Matt Smith were brilliant.

I do feel sorry for Margaret, did she ever find out about what her husband was really up to? (Presuming it's the truth?) I'm off to do a google about it now!

tribpot · 10/12/2017 19:02

Well it's a weird choice given they want to replace them all with older actors in the next series (but not yet deploy The Mirren herself). Matthew Goode is 39, Matt Smith 35, Claire Foy 33, Vanessa Kirby 30. They should want actors in their 50s in order to play them from mid-30 to mid-50 or they might as well just keep the current cast and stick a few grey streaks in their hair. (Olivia Colman is 43).

JosBoys · 10/12/2017 19:06

The Queen Mum definitely jars. I don't think she looks like her at all. The Queen Mum had a round face and the actress is more angular. Plus she's too young.
Vanessa Kirby is beautiful. I do hope she doesn't become the next Mrs Cruise. Grin

blueskypink · 10/12/2017 19:13

I don't think many of the actors are cast because they look like the people they are playing. Certainly Matt Smith looks nothing like Prince Philip. But the beauty of it is that they are all great actors so can conjour up the essence of the people they are playing. Really, I don't think the shape of anyone's face has much to do with it!

tribpot · 10/12/2017 19:43

God, being married to Tony Armstrong-Jones, dodgy as he was, would be infinitely preferable to being married to Tom Cruise .

southeastdweller · 10/12/2017 19:55

Back to Margaret, it must have been hard to live in the shadow of one of the most famous people in the world. Like trilbot what I don't understand is why she didn't marry Townsend when if she had her status wouldn't have changed, apart from her and her future giving up their claims to the throne. Can she have really loved him that much?

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/12/2017 19:58

I've heard that, despite her later life, she was quite religious and felt she couldn't marry a divorced man. How true that is, we'll never know, but she strikes me as a troubled and unhappy woman. She certainly was beautiful though.

And Vanessa Kirby is going out with Tom Cruise? Since when??

Raisedbyguineapigs · 10/12/2017 20:21

Apparently Tom Cruise saw her and requested her for mission impossible. It was hinted that he wanted to interview her for the job of his next wife. She was interviewed and said it was rubbish and she'd had a boyfriend for years.

TabbyMack · 10/12/2017 20:38

I think Ralph Fiennes would make a very good middle aged Philip.

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/12/2017 20:40

I know she was going out with Douglas Booth a while ago.

Raisedbyguineapigs · 10/12/2017 21:38

Was she? Douglas Booth is another AJ Pritchard. Looks like a 12 year old boy even though he must be nearly 30. He's another one who's quite secretive about his love life so maybe he's her secret boyfriend. I have an irrational dislike of Ralph Fiennes and I casnt remember why. It might have something to do with Alex Kingston. But he would make a good Phil

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/12/2017 21:46

Yes, they got together after they acted in a not-so-great adaptation of Great Expectations some years ago. Unfortunately Pip is not meant to be prettier than Estella so it didn't really work for me! I don't think their relationship lasted very long though.

Ralph Fiennes went down in my estimation after he shagged that Qantas flight attendant in the business class toilets!

EvilRingahBitch · 10/12/2017 21:57

I’ve never really forgiven Ralph Fiennes for making it so clear that he had no interest whatsoever in understanding the plot of the Harry Potter films. Just so ungracious.

southeastdweller · 11/12/2017 08:53

Just watched episode 4. Very interesting insights into Tony Armstrong-Jones' personality here. Had a google and it seems he always felt very unloved by his mother, who didn't bother to visit him in the six months he was in hospital as a child when he had polio. She used to refer to him as her 'ugly son'. I wonder if feeling so unwanted was part of why he used to shag around so much.

Have to have another moan about casting! My mouth almost dropped when I saw Anna Chancellor as his mother as she only looks about ten years older than Matthew Goode (she's actually 13 years older).

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 11/12/2017 09:16

Yes, I couldn't understand who she was meant to be as I just assumed she was too young to play his mum!

Maudlinmaud · 11/12/2017 09:20

Enjoyed the first series but can't get into this one at all. I'm dosed with the cold and kept falling asleep, so would wake up half way through episode 3.
I'll have to start again, looks like everyone is enjoying it.

JosBoys · 11/12/2017 09:37

Margaret is such an interesting character. I was reading excerpts from a book about her and it said she decided she didn't want to marry Townsend. Eden and the Queen had made sure she keep her wealth, etc, the only benefit she would have lost was that neither herself or her DCs could take the crown. It implied it was a love affair that burnt out when they had their time apart and that it wasn't a grand thwarted love story that overshadowed all her life.
Reading the 'true stories' alongside The Crown, I'm getting so confused by all the affairs! It seems Macmillan brought up a DD that was the product of his wife's affair with Boothby. And that Armstrong-Jones' married friends brought up a DD that was his.
bluesky it's not just the way the actress looks and her age. It's the way the character is written. She seems too prissy and fussy. None of which is the fault of the actress who is fab.

Tigresswoods · 11/12/2017 12:19

Watched the episode focussed on the Duke of Windsor last night. Loved it, it's a subtle build & then BAM!!

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/12/2017 15:39

Episode 9 was the standout for me. Makes you realise what a dysfunctional family the Duke of Edinburgh is from and what a bizarre youth he had, passed from relative to relative and not seeing either of his parents for years. And as a consequence of that he tried to make his own son into something he wasn't, and Charles didn't escape unscathed.

EvilRingahBitch · 11/12/2017 16:22

I’m a bit wary of watching episode 9. I really want to see the bit about the DofE’s weird childhood but I don’t think I’ll be able to face the stuff with Charles. Is it upsetting (to very very soppy mothers of tween boys)

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/12/2017 16:38

It's a bit sad but the episode is more about Philip and his family. It's a wonder he didn't end up more fucked up really!

Trampire · 11/12/2017 16:44

You really need to see it to understand Prince Philip I think and why I think he genuinely, stubbornly thought he was doing the right thing for Charles (wrongly).
