there's something in my eye...

I think it really brings it home to you how young boys and men were press ganged onto ships and what a hard life it was. No wonder they were all alcoholics!

I love that the screenwriters deal with the emotionally dramatic stuffs well, it really holds it together.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/11/2017 12:24

Really enjoyed this ep. Great acting from Cait and the guy who played Elias. Enjoyed the interaction between Fergus and Jamie. Can’t remember any of this from the book or anything that happens from here on in tbh, so not particularly bothered that LJG didn’t show up (apparently he was supposed to be on The Porpoise?). Anyway, that kind of brings me on to the next point...

I am so fed up of the recycling of the same plot lines. Claire and Jamie get separated! There’s a warrant out for Jamie’s arrest! Here come the British Army!

Yawn. Could DG not think of any other way to introduce some tension?

I also think they really wasted time in the early episodes with stuff that no one was really bothered about (i.e the Boston stuff) and now they’re going to be rushing to fit the rest of the stuff in. I think the reunion should have come at about Episode 3 not 6.

LonelyOversharer · 20/11/2017 17:50

I enjoyed that one. Need a second watch, but what a twat Jamie was to Fergus!! I know he was stressed, but jeez. Well done Fergus for saying no to him. CB acted her socks off, and not too mad a story line re escaping the Porpoise. And yes. LJG should have been onboard. I wonder why they didn't do that bit.

Still cross! Locked up, terribly seasick, steal me the keys so I can take the ship, or you don't know what love is, say no and I'll not give you my blessing. Tit. King of men? No. Go Fergus. Looks like the writers are doing good things with him. SH looked like he was over acting too

Marsali · 20/11/2017 18:47

What was the little thing that Elias gave Claire from his mother?

Jamie was an absolute arsehole. Also felt he would have resisted more when he was put below decks instead of toddling off, they've got the love of my life, oh alright then.

CB did her own jumping own stunt I really like Claire. She was awesome.

Marsali · 20/11/2017 18:47

*jumping off

MoNigheanDonn · 20/11/2017 19:10

Marsali it was a lucky rabbits foot.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/11/2017 19:36

Jamie was an absolute arsehole

Yup. Pissed me off (more so in the books) that Fergus is the son he never got to bring up and he treat him like shite. And Fergus has way more about him than Brianna and the other one.

What was the little thing that Elias gave Claire from his mother

Yes, It was a lucky rabbits foot (not so lucky for young Mr Pound though Sad). It ties in with Jamie seeing a rabbit after Culloden (I think it was) and Brianna had a toy bunny.

Marsali · 20/11/2017 19:40

Oh I couldn't tell that. Thanks!

quirkychick · 20/11/2017 20:32

I assume they didn't do LJG on board because 1) it was easier 2) Claire was being Mistress Fraser and not Malcolm, in the books she is still Malcolm on board to protect Jamie (he uses Fraser and Jamie Roy for smuggling iirc) so LJG does not know who she is when he meets her on board.

Impressive that CB did her own stunt.

DryWhiteagainW · 20/11/2017 20:59

What stunt? We didn't see her in the water or did I miss that bit?

How many episodes are there left?

I love Fergus even more now.

MoNigheanDonn · 21/11/2017 06:49

3 more episodes Dry and then we will be back to #droughtlander - I hope it gets picked up for season 5+

It took guys for Fergus to stand up to Jamie. I dont mind Marsali but it did irritate me when she called Jamie Daddy . Rabbits are a theme apparently, one of the writers mentioned it last week in their weekly Q&A.

quirkychick · 21/11/2017 07:05

Lucky rabbit's foot: they used to be popular when I was a kid, but not something you see now. Perhaps it wasn't lucky for Elias because he gave it to Claire, symbolic of Elias sacrificing himself to help look after the sick men?

I hope they make more of the relationship between Jamie and Fergus, I think in the book Jamie promises them a proper marriage when they land and Marsali holds him to it.

I agree that they drew out the reunion for dramatic effect and are now rushing through the rest, I'm sure the printshop takes place about a third of the way through not halfway. It might mean they cut out some of the boat silliness. Doesn't Jamie pretend to be a french soldier or something and take back the boat...

I've nearly finished watching Black Sails too, last 2 episodes to go. I'm going to be bereft, no more 18th century ship hijinks to watch.

Dunlurking · 21/11/2017 07:19

I’m sorry we didn’t get LJG. In the book, despite it being a ludicrous plot coincidence, it does allow Claire and LJG to develop a relationship/friendship, and respect for each other, without Jamie colouring matters. Enjoyed it very much otherwise, especially Elias.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/11/2017 07:26

despite it being a ludicrous plot coincidence

They almost never happen in Outlander. I mean, what are the chances of the guy that burned down the printshop being on the same boat that Claire was pressed into Doctoring on? Wink

It’s a well known fact that there were only 30 people in the whole of 18th Century Scotland and they were bumping into each all the time.

Dunlurking · 21/11/2017 08:16

“Only 30 people in the whole of Scotland” Grin Courtney

quirkychick · 21/11/2017 11:04

I think there are probably only 30 people I the whole of 18th century Scotland, the West Indies and the Colonies Grin.

Dunlurking · 21/11/2017 11:32

GrinGrin

gamerwidow · 21/11/2017 19:29

Extremely fortunate too that the island Claire lands is the same one Jamie’s ship is shipwrecked on. Who’d though it?

DryWhiteagainW · 21/11/2017 20:37

Can't bear it, only 3 more episodes!

How on earth will Jamie find Claire now? No moblie phones etc then......must have skimmed that bit too

quirkychick · 21/11/2017 20:49

Well, there's obviously only this bit of coast that Claire lands on and Jamie gets shipwrecked on, then there's the bit of Jamaica they go to... that's all there is to the West Indies, luckily Grin.

I may have to binge watch the whole thing after the last episode...

Lessstressedhemum · 21/11/2017 20:51

Strangely, she washes up on the same island as the artemis wrecks on and the same island that he lands on in the book after he follows her to the porpoise. It's all a big stroke of luck.

Lots of foreign folk think there are only about 30 folk in Scotland.
"Where are you from?"
"Scotland."
"Oh, you must know wee Jeannie in from Auchtermuchty, then."
"Eh, naw. I live in Hawick. It's nowhere near there."
"Really?"

I liked the episode. Jamie was a bit of an arse, but he was desperate and panicked, I think. Fergus made a good choice under pressure. Poor wee Elias. He just quietly slipped away without anyone really noticing. It made me cry in the book. It was even worse, seeing his cute wee face.

Caitriona was very good. The Heughligans were complaining that they cut the scene where she tortures Tompkins, just like they cut all Claire's big scenes, like the Wolf wrestling! You can't please some folk. Hope, they don't complain us out of Season 5.

OP posts:
quirkychick · 21/11/2017 21:24

Doesn't she stitch him rather roughly or something? I think I can live without that and the wolf wrestling... much better to focus on the emotional aspect of Elias and warning Jamie!

DryWhiteagainW · 21/11/2017 21:37

Is it true RR and SS are going out irl?
And apparently Karen Gillan is dating another cast member....funny since we thought she'd make a good Brianna

And only 3 episodes.....will B appear in the last one?

And......hasn't 5 been commissioned ?Shock

Lessstressedhemum · 21/11/2017 21:46

Haven't seen anything saying that season 5 has been confirmed yetSad

Yes, Claire stitches him up all violently till he tells her what she wants to hear. I can do without all that as well. The show does the emotional bonds much better, I think.

Some of the book-zealots really need to understand that film is a different medium and that also there are some creative choices that justify departing from the source material. But there is someone out there to complain about each departure from the books, even things like Mr. Willoughby being much more sympathetic (as opposed to his cartoonish characterization in the book). I don't believe I could have watched a Mr. Willoughby on screen depicted as he is in the books. They also don't like it that Young Ian didn't get thrashed. I am so glad they left that out. And they really don't like anything that reflects badly on St. Jamie. I actually like that he was depicted in the last episode as being a bit of an ass. It makes him more human and believable to me. I think I agree with almost every single change they have made from the books.
