Whoever recommended the Outlander Cast podcast: thank you! I love love love it! It’s the audio equivalent of chatting wiTh you lot :)

Dunlurking · 17/11/2017 13:23

Less your knowledge and experience sounds amazing. Thank you for posting those details. I’d love to learn more. Does anyone run courses? I’m always interested in the contents of old monastery herb gardens as well, and what they used them for.

Lessstressedhemum · 17/11/2017 13:31

Yes, willow bark is the basis of aspirin. I know, Lonely. You can pay a fortune for Nytol etc. or you can grow/buy some valerian and make your own. Add in some hops, oat straw and lavender for something a bit more complex and Bob's your uncle. Same with Senekot, you can easily make syrup of figs with senna pods etc.. People have lost touch with natural remedies because they are spooky or dirty or maybe a bit smelly. Folk want something "clean" and shiny in a blister pack, even if it is exactly the same.

My kids have grown up with herbal remedies, teas etc. and aromatherapy oils and still would rather have something from the shop than something that I make myself. My wound salve is green because of the comfrey and plantain in it. (It also has lavender, calendula, St. John's Wort, honey, tea tree oil and frankincense) You would think I was trying to kill my youngest when I suggest putting it on any scraps or cuts. He would rather have germoleneAngry Such is the power of advertising.

There are courses. if you search for medical herbalists in your area, they usually have classes.

Thanks Less, will do. Coincidentally I bought my first pestle and mortar (from Lakeland) yesterday Grin Would I get lots of use from it for making up these types of medicines?

ToniMumsnet · 17/11/2017 18:08

That's amazing Less. I would love to use natural remedies at home more.

Lessstressedhemum · 17/11/2017 18:15

Mortar and pestle are good, just don't use it for medicine making and food prep. You should have separate tools for each.

Dunlurking · 17/11/2017 18:19

Oh good Less, an excuse for another one once I start on the medicine making Grin. They are such satisfying objects. Sort of primal in your hands.

Dunlurking · 17/11/2017 18:20

Primeval even!

RubyReins · 18/11/2017 12:05

I'm one for potions too less! My hawthorn whisky is fab for high blood pressure (crush the berries in a pestle and mortar and add to your high alcohol bevvy of choice and keep for one month before serving - sherry is good too but I'm a highlander so I favour the water of life) . Devastated that the council ripped up all the dog roses near me - have to get my rosehips from Morrisons car park! My dad's blood pressure improved after taking a tot of my potion every few days. I like to think it's cause and effect!

quirkychick · 18/11/2017 15:25

RubyReinsthe hawthorn whisky sounds great. Perhaps we should all turn into wise women or dames blanches Grin. Herbalism sounds really interesting, I'm a bit of a nutrition nut, so there's a bit of crossover with herbs and spices for medicine and nutrition eg. ginger.

Lessstressedhemum · 18/11/2017 16:42

Hawthorn tincture is great for blood pressure and heart health, Ruby. I would love to be a wisewoman. I think if I had lived hundreds of years ago that's what I would have been (as long as it wasn't C16or C17 so I could mostly avoid being burnt at the stake or pressed to death.)

I use whisky for my tinctures, too. Can't be doing with vodka or rum but I swear by the uisge-beatha. It's something of a cure all. You can't beat a wee hot toddy to cure what ails you.

Oh I would have been dancing a gallows jig for sure!

Lessstressedhemum · 18/11/2017 22:23

We could swing from the gibbet together Grin
It's a good job we don't burn witches any longer. My weans would shop me in at the drop of a hat!

Only six hours to go here in the US for the next episode. Smile

MoNigheanDonn · 19/11/2017 06:20

Hope you are enjoying / enjoyed it Seneca tomorrow at 5am it's available here. Toddler got me up at 5 his morning so I may be able to watch it before school run tomorroe if all goes to plan 🙄

SenecaFalls · 19/11/2017 06:43

It was very good. And a real acting tour de force for Caitriona Balfe.

quirkychick · 19/11/2017 10:32

Less and Ruby I think I would be joining you, independent intelligent women would have been regarded with great suspicion let alone those recommending medicines or "charms". I think Season 1 showed that quite clearly, both Claire and Geillis were in demand for their healing knowledge but turned on quickly as being witches.

Seneca I look forward to watching it tomorrow!

SenecaFalls · 19/11/2017 17:12

No spoilers or anything, but y'all need to have your hankies at the ready.

quirkychick · 19/11/2017 17:32

Ooh, Seneca, I may have seen some clips on YouTube... there's a trailer for the next episode up too.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/11/2017 18:11

I predict heartbreak this week.

LonelyOversharer · 20/11/2017 07:49

Ahh. Am up far too late to watch before the school run. I'm going to put this one on the big telly once the house is quiet. Dp better bloody well not interrupt me this week.

MoNigheanDonn · 20/11/2017 11:23

Oooh good episode! CB acting was fantastic.

MoNigheanDonn · 20/11/2017 11:30

Trailer for next week looks good too. I hate them being separated, don't suppose it can be for mug longer if there is the party/ball to attend before the season ends.
