Dg also tells us nothing about Fergus and Marsalis relationship so he does come across as a bit of a shit, because we don’t understand why Marsali would put up with him. In the absence of any definitive info I’m choosing to imagine them as madly in love and having truly gorgeous sex and Fergus making it all up to her in other ways. It is clear she loves him lots and I also always thought that no matter how hard her life is in America, it would have been 10 times harder and more miserable had she stayed in Scotland

AKAmyself · 10/11/2017 13:38

I also hope they’ll build in some sexy time and levity for poor Claire. All that frowning and second guessing her decision is not doing anything for her wrinkles

quirkychick · 10/11/2017 13:46

Marsali, Fergus and Brianna, there characters could all do with developing more. Marsali is so much more kick ass than Brianna. After all the sacrifice etc. of Jamie and Claire you would have thought more/better would have been made of her character.

Lessstressedhemum · 10/11/2017 13:53

I think they have truly awesome sex, it's the only answer. Remember when she is labouring with Henri Christian and he shags her to make it progress better. And then immediately spoils it by stomping of in a strop because the wean has dwarfism. Hmm

I do wish DG would develop their relationship more and the relationships between them and Jamie in particular, but also Claire, because they are, in effect, the parents and obviously have a close knit family.

I keep going back to Murtagh in Season 1 who says Jamie shouldn't be with Laoghaire as she'll still be a girl when she's 40 and Jamie needs a woman.

How had I forgotten that?? Ah Murtagh, always so wise.

quirkychick · 10/11/2017 14:08

June Murtagh would have told Jamie not to... and he knew where Claire had gone (in the tv show at least).

Less Fergus grew up in a brothel, I'm sure he knows a trick or two. Both Fergus and Marsali are interesting characters and have great potential, really. Brianna could be much better too I still think Karen Gillan would make an excellent Brianna kick ass, clever but sympathetic rather than annoying.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/11/2017 14:19

I actually felt sorry for Laoighaire this week which I didn't in the books. The adaptation is much more... mature I think in the treatment of the characters than DG was.

I agree. I hadn’t picked up on the first watch (or in the books tbh) that the reason Jamie and Laoghaire didn’t gel in the bedroom was because of some kind of abuse in a previous marriage.

I think the producers (again) have done an excellent job of making Laoghaire more than the one dimensional character that she is in the book.

And as an aside, Romancing The Stone is on Netflix. I imagine DG to be very much like Kathleen Turners character at the beginning where she’s finishing her romance novel (and obviously in love with her male romantic lead), with tears pouring down her face, saying ‘This is so good!’ Grin I defy any of the Lasses to watch it and not think of her.

quirkychick · 10/11/2017 14:35

The suggested dv is in the books, in a later book Marsali tells Claire about being hit and Laoghaire being hit for sticking up for her. Not much is made of it, though.

Lol at DG being Kathleen Turner, I've read an interview where she says Jamie isn't based on her husband but she likes tall, red-heads with a clever sense of humour.

JuneFromBethesda · 10/11/2017 18:03

Murtagh would have told Jamie not to... and he knew where Claire had gone (in the tv show at least).

But we're assuming that Murtagh was sent off to the colonies along with all the other Ardsmuir prisoners, aren't we? (Not in the book obviously). So he wouldn't have been at Lallybroch when Jamie was being set up with Laoghaire.

I loved Romancing the Stone when it came out. I think I was about 15 and had my first ever crush on a film star - Michael Douglas, old enough to be my father Blush

I've often wondered what DG's husband thinks of this amazing character she's created - would you feel a bit inadequate being married to a writer who was so obviously in love with her creation (who was so obviously not you)!?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 10/11/2017 18:08

The casting is very good this series, both Young Ian and Marsali look very like their respective parents

quirkychick · 10/11/2017 18:13

I meant if Muturgh had been at Lallybroch Smile. I'm hoping we see him next season...

JuneFromBethesda · 10/11/2017 18:55

Me too - surely we will? They can’t have kept him alive just for Ardsmuir

ToniMumsnet · 10/11/2017 18:58

I'm assuming that Muturgh will take on the roll of Duncan Innes in series 4.

It could make more sense having Muturgh marry Jocasta as he was in love with her sister.

quirkychick · 10/11/2017 20:18

ToniMumsnet absolutely, it would make much more sense. There can be a great reunion with Jamie, Claire and Murtagh Grin.

MoNigheanDonn · 10/11/2017 20:24

Can't wait to have Murtugh back Grin

JuneFromBethesda · 10/11/2017 21:33

Oooh there's a spoiler Toni - I haven't finished book 4 yet Confused Grin

Lessstressedhemum · 10/11/2017 22:56

Yes, I think Murtagh will take Duncan's place.
I would hate to be DG's husband. How can he possibly compete with Jamie? She clearly is completely in love with him and he is such an impossible goal to reach. Her husband must feel completely inadequate, poor bloke.

OP posts:
gamerwidow · 10/11/2017 23:00

I too think he'll take Duncan's place but it's hard to imagine him taking being cuckolded by a slave as well as Duncan did.....

quirkychick · 11/11/2017 07:28

gamer maybe they'll work their tv magic on that storyline too, along with the spoilers Duncan's impotent but manages an affair with a slave storyline.

I agree that the casting this season is very good. Loving Young Ian, older Fergus and Marsali.

Lessstressedhemum · 11/11/2017 08:45

Quirky, that's what I thought as well. We know that Murtagh isn't impotent after his wee fling with Suzette. So that storyline won't fly. And I just can't see him placidly taking being cuckolded. Time will tell.

ToniMumsnet · 11/11/2017 09:50

I find the character of Ulysses a bit hard to accept anyway. Perhaps they could tone him down a bit so that Murtagh is a combination of both Innes and Ulysses.
At least that's what I hope they will do.

Lessstressedhemum · 11/11/2017 11:06

Och, I don't mind Ulysses so much but I have never warmed to Jocasta. Unless they soften her a good bit, she is too sharp and scheming for Murtagh, I think. He needs someone who will cherish him.

OP posts:
ToniMumsnet · 11/11/2017 11:10

Perhaps Mrs Bug would be a better match for Murtagh.

Lessstressedhemum · 11/11/2017 12:07

That would be funny, but really, really sad when Ian shoots her. Poor Murtagh has had enough trauma in his life.
