Lessstressed thank you.

DryWhiteagainW · 06/11/2017 22:54

Watched it twife in a row" loved it.

Agree with you all....pot of shit, Jamie's bollocks....great lines. Loved c giving j that huge injection in his bum, and his face. I didn't think it was a look of love when she handed him the water, more trying it on to get more whiskey......
I have also been pronouncing M wrong.
I thought Claire w going to tell Jenny about Brianna when they were sitting on the step.
I really liked the episode. Missed Fergus .
Is brianna going to appear ? When?
Does anyone know when S4 is planned to air?

DryWhiteagainW · 06/11/2017 22:57

Lessstressed and other Scots ".....are "Ken", "braw" "Dinna fashion yourself" still used in Scotland ?

Lessstressedhemum · 06/11/2017 22:57

Season 4 is supposed to air next September. They say that they want to make that a regular thing, if it gets renewed.

GreatWhites · 06/11/2017 23:07

Yes, ken, fash etc are still common up north and in the east. Younger Scots tend to have less regional accents ime. Dinna is more of the pronunciation of didn't, not a word on its own.

The one thing that jars for me is that most of the actors are West of Scotland/ Glaswegians! We wouldn't use ken or fash. Bizarrely I'd use braw only in the phrase 'he's no very braw', which is a nice way of saying only his mother could find him handsome Wink

Lessstressedhemum · 07/11/2017 00:13

I'm West of Scotland, (north Ayrshire) and I would say ken and fash, but I am quite oldSmile younger ones like my children have much less of the Scots dialect now. Mine are always getting on at me about it. We wouldn't say dinna or canna, it would be dinnae/cannae, but that's an accent thing not dialect. My favourites are things like gommerel, words which youngsters seem never to have heard but we're common parlance when I was growing up.

Everything is changing nowadays because the world is much more global than it used to be, iyswim.

OP posts:
quirkychick · 07/11/2017 06:49

Gommerel is a great word! but I do have Scottish cousins.

I think what Ned says about Jamie's bollocks is from the book. I'm still grinning about pot of shit, that so describes my mil Grin.

Lol at the plot holes. People go on about JKRowling and "deus ex machina", jumping unexpected huge plot points on readers, but she's got nothing on DG. Geillis, who was supposed to have been burnt as a witch is actually alive and well, 20yrs after accumulating treasure to fund the rising she sends a ship to get it. Both she and Jamie knew of its whereabouts for years and they only both decide to get it now, so a pirate ship kidnaps Young Ian.

MoNigheanDonn · 07/11/2017 07:24

I'm from South Ayrshire originally less in D&G now.

I say aye, naw, ken, dinnae, wheesht and a fair few others that I can't think of just now.

Going to try to watch it again today, hopefully toddler sleeps! They're filming just now and have been for a few weeks so I imagine it'll be mod 2018 before it's shown, possibly a bit later like this year. We will have 42 episodes to watch back by then so I'm thinking maybe one a week starting in the new year, apart from cliffhanger episodes when I'll watch two lol. That should take us up to the new season. And fx for season 5 too!

AKAmyself · 07/11/2017 07:32

Can’t wait for tonight! Will you will still want to listen to me blathering on about it after Im done?

AKAmyself · 07/11/2017 07:34

On a separate but highly related note, I desperately want to take a holiday in the Scottish highlands. I just can’t convince dh :( his official reason is that he doesn’t want to spend a week in the poring rain, but secretly I suspect he’s afraid I’ll start hauling myself at stones in the hope of going back in time Grin

MoNigheanDonn · 07/11/2017 07:41

AKA aye we will be here to talk don't worry.

I've been as far as Glencoe/Fort William area and it is stunning. I want to go to Skye at some point. Arran is also gorgeous but its not Highlands

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/11/2017 07:48

Will you will still want to listen to me blathering on about it after Im done

Of course Smile

I want to go to Skye at some point

I’ve read on Instagram that Skye has got ridiculously touristy and really, really busy. It’s put me off a bit (obviously I’m a tourist as wel but I can’t stand crowds).

breadwidow · 07/11/2017 08:17

I’m obsessed with going to the highlands too!

We nearly went here last Easter www.hoseasons.co.uk/lodges/loch-ness-highland-lodges-ness mainly cos of the hot tub, after a Facebook friend (who lives in Perthshire) posted a gorgeous pic of her son in the hot tub with view over Loch Ness. We bottled going so far and risking shit, flights to Inverness didn’t tie up with the booking dates on the lodge and drove to wales instead, which was nice but not the highlands. I’ve been to Argyll a lot as my aunt lives there but I’m now obsessed with going further north, I want to do the north coast 500 & go to the outer Hebrides. This all started pre outlander. DH will go but still prefers a hot holiday!

Anyway, agree episode 8 was muuuuuch better than 7. Agree with all the stuff pointed out as great, I also loved the flashback to the lallybroch Hogmanay where Jamie met marsali & Joan. You could really see what he was yearning for.

breadwidow · 07/11/2017 08:18

Missed a word in the post below, taking shit weather!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/11/2017 08:23

I don’t mind the rain or cold (or even snow). In fact, I think I’d be seriously disappointed if I went to the Highlands and it was sunny. I want mist and atmosphere (realise I’m probably in a minority though).

LonelyOversharer · 07/11/2017 09:51

My dp is from Fife, and every other wird is Ken. He half says a sentence, adds a ken, as if this fills in the rest. Lots of cannie and dinnie. I've been with him so long I use all his Scottish words with an English accent (except Ken, ugh), which makes most Scottish people laugh at me

Went to Ben Nevis etc as a child, and Orkney with work, it was blizzarding and not very warm at all! We live just south of the border in Cumbria, so holidays are doable, but we are very time poor atm.

Dp has no idea of my Outlander escapism habit, so I could easily plan and swing a good highland break, but if we ever get away on holiday I want it to be good weather!

aka yes, your opinion of the episode is mandatory I am afraid.

Lessstressedhemum · 07/11/2017 10:18

Go to Loch Ness, it is beautiful. You can drive to all sorts of Outlander places from there. too. Aye, it can be cold, but even the air is gorgeous.

Skye is fabulous, but very, very crowded at the minute, particularly with American tourists, apparently. Maybe best to go there in the winter.

It's Shetland and the Hebrides I really want to go to, but can't convince anyone here. For an island experience with slightly less risk of awful weather, you cannae beat Arran. They don't call it Scotland in miniature for nothing, I can see it from my windows and it is beautiful.

The crazy thing is that I’m sure my dh would ADORE the highlands. He’s outdoorsy and loves mountains, so I think he’s just put off by the ghost of Jamie Grin.

Weirdly enough my dream of a Scottish holiday predates my outlander obsession. My hairdresser here in Switzerland told me about a family holiday they took with their teenage kids where they rented electric bikes and toured Scotland that way, staying in rural B and B and just generally having a grand time. She swore it never once rained!

And even before then I remember when I started working in London aeons ago a colleague showed me her holiday pics and on seeing the gorgeous beaches and blue sea (sunshine there too!) I asked where in the Caribbean she’s been Grin

Lessstressedhemum · 07/11/2017 10:43

Back to the Scots words. I did a quiz with my BB a couple of years ago for St. Andrew's night where they had to "translate" some words and phrases. It was full of things like "haud yer wheesht", glaikit, dreich, sonsie, gowk and the like. None of they boys had a clue, they didn't even know what a lum was. It made me quite sad, actually.

AKA, it rains much less in the east than it does here. The Highlands are God's own country for folk who like the outdoors, just avoid Ben Nevis, it's like Sauchiehall Street on a sunny day.

AKAmyself · 07/11/2017 11:07

Less, I’d love to come to the Hebrides with you!

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2017 13:49

If you want a less touristy Island, go to Mull.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/11/2017 15:11

I was right that a bit 'o shagging would sort Jamie's hair out. Grin
It's already lost a bit of the frizz.

If he and Claire can stop arguing long enough to have a session on the rug in front of the fire, his hair will be back to full shampoo advert glory!

quirkychick · 07/11/2017 16:24

Breakfast Grin

DryWhiteagainW · 07/11/2017 17:54

On the way back from the Lakes Hellwater last year we stopped our carriage to water the horses car to have a cuppa and there were some little standing stones outside. Just had to race out and touch one, thought this was hilarious my family thought it weird and embarrassing felt sad that there was no one to appreciate the moment.

May watch again tonight.

I have to say SH is breathtakingly powerful when he goes ballistic ...

DryWhiteagainW · 07/11/2017 18:04

Ah yes, the hair! Meant to comment that c and j hair has really settled down. Breakfast you were right.

AND, sorry if I said this before, but we spent a week on the banks of Loch Ness, very close to Inverness Oct '14. Less if only I'd know Kent? it then . Climbed B Nevis might have passed SH and went to Skye which was breathtaking. Overdosed on tablet which is initially delicious but 10mins after makes you feel very sick!!!!!!
