Also loved Ned Gowan's response to Jamie's asking what Laoghaire wants.

ToniMumsnet · 06/11/2017 20:18

@GreatWhites

'If there's a pot of shit on to boil, you'll stir it'

Grin Grin Grin

That line is one of the best in the whole 3 series.

SenecaFalls · 06/11/2017 20:23

That should be a tag line for AIBU.

ToniMumsnet · 06/11/2017 20:59

Maybe that should be the title of our next thread.

JuneFromBethesda · 06/11/2017 21:07

What a CRACKING episode. Just pitch perfect the whole way through. I loved it so much I'm watching it again straight away Grin

I agree with everything you've all said Grin especially Ned's line about Laoghaire's revenge, and the pot of shit line, and this

Jamie’s look of absolute love at Claire when she brings him the water instead of whiskey

I melted into a small puddle at that point ...

God the scriptwriters are brilliant. They take the hotchpotch of the books, tease out the important bits, get rid of the dross, and somehow craft the whole thing into a wholly satisfying story that makes sense (!)

Also - we talk mostly about the characters and the actors who play them - but this episode what really struck me was how beautifully shot it is. Every scene looks absolutely magnificent. Poldark looked good, and made a lot of the Cornish landscape, but Outlander tops it and puts the finest BBC costume drama to shame. (Bigger budget I guess, but still!)

When Jamie tries to explain to Jenny where Claire was for 20 years - that she thought he was dead so she went off to the colonies - and she says that the Claire she knew would never have given up looking for him ... ah, you can't pull the wool over her eyes. She'd never tolerate the plot holes in the books Grin

How cute was Laoghaire's younger daughter!?

Also - am I the only one who pronounced Marsali like Marsala with an i on the end? MarSAli rather than MARsali ...

GreatWhites · 06/11/2017 21:09

How cute was Laoghaire's younger daughter!?

She was precious! The older one was so like Leoghaire too.

The Murray casting has all been spot on too. They all look like siblings.

JuneFromBethesda · 06/11/2017 21:11

Oh and Jamie's wry observance, when Claire accuses him of being the father of Jamie's children, especially the red-headed one - 'there are other red-headed men in Scotland' not to us, Jamie

This is the first time I've half-wished I hadn't read the book already, the shock of seeing Laoghaire appear and announce that she was Jamie's wife must be quite something if you didn't know it was coming ...

JuneFromBethesda · 06/11/2017 21:22

Jamie’s finger tapping when they arrive at Lallybroch

I missed this first time round! I had to go back to catch it. DG does go on and on about him doing this in the books.

The argument after Laoghaire appears (that was just magnificent on both CB & SH part. I always loved the argument scene in the first season where Claire gets kidnapped by BJR again and this was reminiscent of that) Yes! It was so well-written, and so well-acted. So believable, with both of them spilling out all the hurt and longing of 20 years.

Dillite2 · 06/11/2017 21:35

What the fuck was that ship bullshit? Where the fuck did it come from and how the duck did they know that Ian was there? What kind of nonsense was that?

Sorry for swearing, and hello fellow lassies, but that ship bullshit just gave me the rage.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/11/2017 21:40

dillite I’ve read the books and I can’t remember why they were hiding there on the off chance that someone might go and explore an abandoned island Grin I’m sure it’ll be explained or not.

Apparently, LJG said earlier in the series that it would be a good place for a ship to hide, so they were setting it up but it completely went over my head Confused

Did anybody else wonder why they didn’t get a boat and row out to the island instead of swimming there? If Jamie couldn’t bring the treasure back, how was Young skinny Ian supposed to?

GreatWhites · 06/11/2017 21:41

You've not read the books Dilite2? Grin

Oh you've got plenty more where that comes from. It's less of a suspension of disbelief and more of a setting disbelief on fire and dancing on its ashes.

LonelyOversharer · 06/11/2017 21:42

june I too wished I'd not read voyager today, I watched s1 and s2 with 'new' eyes, now I'm looking for bits of the book, and what's better all of it

I think Ned's line about Jamies bollocks is in the book. Superb scene! Yes I always read Marsali like mars-sar-lie, much prettier the way it's said on the telly!

Almost finished a second watch, dp bloody interrupted me again. Very grumpy. It is beautifully shot, and I only wanted Jenny to cheer up as I wanted her to be happy! She so knows she's been fobbed off. I think they should have bent the book and told her.

JuneFromBethesda · 06/11/2017 21:44

I think Jamie didn't bring the treasure back because he couldn't do anything with it, not because he couldn't physically manage it. In the book it's made clear that the area is pretty much barren, very few villages or dwellings of any sort, so on his own having just escaped from prison, he'd get nowhere with a cache of jewels which he couldn't sell anywhere.

Have faith Dillite and go with the flow Grin

ToniMumsnet · 06/11/2017 21:53

I might be remembering this wrong, but its all related to Geillis and using the stones to get back home.
She knows about them because Dougal told her I think. So is it just a coincidence they were all there at the same time?
There is another weird thing about her needing young men too but that just went right over my head.

LouiseBrooks · 06/11/2017 22:04

Just finished watching and loved it. Agree with so much of what has already been said but yes, you're telling me there wasn't one boat in the area they could have used?

It does look like it's going to go all Voodoo and ridiculous but I still can't wait for next week!

Dillite2 · 06/11/2017 22:09

No, I haven't read the books. Having read comments on here though, I better not, I don't think my blood pressure can take it. I only discovered the show a few months ago when I got amazon prime. Usually I am a rather forgiving soul when it comes to plots that make no sense, but this whole ship steaming pile of shit business was a step too far.

Lessstressedhemum · 06/11/2017 22:13

The ship is fetching the treasure for Geillis. It's the stuff that she embezzled from Arthur for the Rising, although later on Jamie and Claire theorise that it was the £50,000 promised the Charles by the Duke of Sandringham. It's just a coincidence that Ian is on the island when they arrive.

I think they swim because it is too rocky and wild for a wee boat.

LonelyOversharer · 06/11/2017 22:22

It's all so ridiculous and far fetched! I can't wait for the rest!

With all the scenery and sets being so so perfect, I'm sorry but the box of jewels and coins looked like dd3's plastic jem box with some chocolate coins (crap homemade ones at that) thrown in! It even sounds plasticy when he runs his fingers through it. I'd laugh a lot if they had actually used the set designers daughters "treasure box".

LouiseBrooks · 06/11/2017 22:24

So Geilus wasn't really burned?

And who is LJG? Am I being a bit thick because I have no idea who you mean.

LouiseBrooks · 06/11/2017 22:24

"Geilis" , sorry

Lessstressedhemum · 06/11/2017 22:32

LJG = Lord John Grey.

Geillis escaped burning and fled to France and then Jamaica.

JuneFromBethesda · 06/11/2017 22:35

the box of jewels and coins looked like dd3's plastic jem box with some chocolate coins (crap homemade ones at that) thrown in I agree, that was a rare duff note by the props team. Thoroughly unconvincing!

SenecaFalls · 06/11/2017 22:36

I've forgotten from the books, but when does Fergus show up again?

ToniMumsnet · 06/11/2017 22:41

He turns up as they are about to sail a ship they have borrowed from Jarrod in pursuit of Ian.

He has Masalli with him and tells them he plans to marry her.
