I'm so glad I found you fellow mumlanders

Whatthefoxgoingon · 07/11/2017 19:15

The bit where Jamie accuses Claire of leaving him and she says “I left you??” broke my heart a little. She looked so so hurt. Super acting this episode!

I’m glad I read this book so long ago that I can’t remember much of it. DH has never read any of it so his face was a picture when laoghaire turned up Grin I’m most pleased he now watches with me, this sort of thing is not his cup of tea at all Smile

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/11/2017 19:31

Yeah, I kind of wish I hadn’t read the books and everything was a surprise. Or even better, that the books had never existed in the first place and this was just an original show (mainly because I wouldn’t have been able to resist spoilers).

Those who haven’t read the books are losing their minds over Laoghaire on the Outlander reddit. Can’t say I blame ‘em as it still doesn’t make sense to me, although the show went some way to making it understandable.

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2017 19:32

Speaking of destinations, y'all need to go the the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore, if you haven't already been. In addition to being a great record of certain aspects of Scottish social history, some scenes in Series 1 were filmed there. It's still on my bucket list to re-visit, although in deference to AKA's DH, it did pour down rain the first time we went and snow the second time.

Cannotwillnot · 07/11/2017 21:01

There's a great locations guide on the Visit Scotland site:

static.visitscotland.com/pdf/outlander-film-locations.pdf

We did an Outlander tour earlier this year unbeknown to DH.

Culloden Battlefield, Doune Castle (audio guide narrated by SH and opportunity to try on Outlander costumes), Preston Mill and Highland Folk museum were highlights. Ruined Midhope Castle AKA Lallybroch was also good to have a wander around although you can't go inside (see photos)

It was fantastic, although we had good weather; it would probably be miserable in the rain.

Lassies, episode 9 was magnificent. The acting was once again superlative, so much depth in their hurt and anger, I loved the "BECAUSE I'M A COWARD!" line so much.

I saw parallels tot he way they dealt with the aftermath of Wentworth prison, in that their relationship doesn't just magically work beautifully and smoothly after a massive trauma. The fact that they are still in love and attracted to each other doesn't erase the fact they are real people having to overcome their problems. I am so glad the best lines from the books made it in ("will you risk the man I have become for the sake of the man I once was" and the unforgettable "what does Laoghaire want?" "I believe her preference would be for you to be castrated and yer bollocks hung on her wall").

Someone up thread said they think they would have behaved exactly like Jenny, and I found that comment enlightening. I have 2 younger brothers, one married to an absolute raving bitch, and I suspect im a pain-in-the-arse sister. Kudos to Laura Donnelly for a phenomenal performance.

Only gripe - where's mah Fergus?!?

AKAmyself · 07/11/2017 21:20

I've said it before, SH is such a physical actor and I am saying this with a totally straight face and not a hint of a dirty thought :D

He is perfect when he does explosive anger.

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2017 22:03

I also have two younger brothers, and yes, I can completely understand Jenny's not letting go of her anger.

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2017 22:05

And yes again to Laura Donnelly's performance. The looks that passed on her face as Claire tries to soften her. Perfection.

SenecaFalls · 07/11/2017 22:06

I read somewhere that she read for the part of Claire. That is interesting to contemplate.

Lessstressedhemum · 08/11/2017 00:06

I've thought of a title for the next thread. How about Mumlanders of the Caribbean?

Haha that's great Less

I'm sure I read somewhere that SH recommended Laura for the part of Jenny. Her acting was fantastic in this episode , all the acting was actually.

I read the script yesterday and Fergus did appear at Lallybroch when Jamie has been bandaged up, he awoke to see Fergus...it just didn't make the final cut. Maybe it'll be in deleted scenes when the DVD comes out. I'm finding it interesting to read the scripts actually, to see what small changes the actors make.

Aaah the Outlander Writers answered my question on Twitter this morning BlushGrin

AKAmyself · 08/11/2017 07:33

I read an interesting review in the New York Times about Outlander developing a “Jamie problem”. The writers position was that Jamie is behaving like an asshole and not being held accountable for it. I agree with the first bit (up to a point) but not with the latter. I think the show is making a good job of showing his flaws, both old and new. Nonetheless it was refreshing to read a different POV from the all-out adoring fan sites.

snozzlemaid · 08/11/2017 07:41

Mo that's exciting. What did you ask and what was their answer?

AKAmyself · 08/11/2017 07:57

Quick q re Laura Donnelly, was she pregnant this Season?

I read she and sh studied together and have known each other a long time. It did cross my mind that she would have made an interesting Claire

MoNigheanDonn · 08/11/2017 08:07

Not sure if Laura pregnant? A quick Google didn't give any answers

On a different note - I get it that Claire hasn’t yet had time to go shopping, what with all the shagging and murdering and firefighting and marital drama, but I just can’t wait for her to get some new clothes. That blue governess outfit is starting to do my head in!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 08/11/2017 08:43

Re Claire's dress. I feel that the blue outfit can of reflects her Season 3 personality. Severe, buttoned up, unchanging.
While her Season 1 dresses were wild, multilayered and always evolving. (plus awesome knitted accessories!)

Lessstressedhemum · 08/11/2017 10:08

I agree with that, Squiffany. I think that as time goes on and she settles back down she will shed buttons and stays like a loon until she is going about in naught but her shift! Hopefully, Jamie will do the same Wink
Seriously, though, she has to be shown to be uncomfortable, stiff, kind of severe and a bit out of place. The grey outfit is part of that. If you look at the soft, natural colours the others wear, and Jamie's black to reflect his grief, the cut, colour and everything else about the clothes is telling you something about the characters.

OP posts:
AKAmyself · 08/11/2017 10:11

I totally get it and I totally agree. Also for all the complaints about the actors not looking old enough, I feel the clothing choices are really ageing.

She just looked so out of place in lallybroch in her formal batman suit.

AKAmyself · 08/11/2017 10:16

As for Jamie I’d been meaning to comment on his GORGEOUS black boots, which I think signify =man of substance + dominant

That’s it isn’t it? He is much more dominant than he used to be. In season one the whole arc was about him realising he had to be an equal to Claire and waking away from society’s expectations about the man of the house. Season 2 saw him struggling to reconsider his masculinity. Season 3 so far has been about him learning to survive alone, and to be a leader, and to deal mostly with men. He hadn’t had a relationship with a woman he respects in 20 years and it therefore makes sense that he will be so uneven in dealing with Claire ( I’m thinking both about the lies but also about the expectation she’d understand and forgive him instantlyh

AKAmyself · 08/11/2017 10:21

In other words he’s regressed to a much more 18th century idea of masculinity, one that involves not telling your wife key stuff about your life, not really caring about consent, and keeping your sister in the dark about something she would totally get because she’s never left the farm (did anyone else feel incensed by that? Jennie could totally handle the truth)

AKAmyself · 08/11/2017 10:21

I meant she would never get. Sorry I’m at work and typing too fast. I think you see what I mean though :)
