The books are batshit but very addictive, I think the emotional pull keeps you reading on. You never know quite what's going to happen next unless you've read the plot on wikipedia I found I needed to keep reading the next chapter to see what happens each time. I also just kept wanting to find out if they got back to Fraser's Ridge. I'm surprised Jamie's alive tbh, he has so many near death experiences.

DG is most probably a witch. She admits herself that she thinks she is BJR and in an interview CB said she thought she wasn't quite human, in that she was a bit of a superwoman.

EvilTwins · 02/11/2017 23:00

I read the first book and liked it, but decided not to read any more. Then I got a bit bored on holiday and downloaded book 2... Then read the other 6. They're bonkers (and Claire ought to be dead given the number of times she suddenly realises she's been holding her breath) but so addictive. My friend (also addicted) lent me her copy of the companion (Through the Stones or something) and I bought her an Outlander bag from Litographs for her birthday.

MoNigheanDonn · 03/11/2017 06:58

My free Amazon Prime trial has run out argh.

quirkychick · 03/11/2017 07:38

MoNigheanDonn I renewed mine yesterday.

slalomsuki · 03/11/2017 07:53

I agree that the books ramble and get stupid plot themes as they go on. No one has mentioned the water powered electricity power station bit yet or did I just imagine that?

I liked the Frasers Ridge parts and the bits on the wars of independence. As a result I read a bit more and came across a series call Turn on Amazon prime that covers this and George Washington’s spy ring. Stars Jamie Bell from Billy Elliot fame

LonelyOversharer · 03/11/2017 09:11

I started to watch Turn, gave in after a couple of episodes, but will go back to it in the end.

Oh crikey, so I'm guessing Bree invents electricity as well. Gosh that year of doing engineering really made a difference didn't it? I was a reasonably technical engineer for a few years, and couldn't get electricity to work for the life of me! I could build the water wheel etc (I'm guessing she didn't go hydro electric turbine?) but to actually get working power at the other end? I suppose she 'invents' magnets, copper wire and lightbulbs too. Clever Bree. FFS.

Anyway, looking forward to monday!

lonely Grin

I've decided I'm going to give the books a go. I definitely want to read 1-4 and will see how I feel after that.

I'm skint til payday so no Amazon Prime for a fortnight! Argh. I'll have a few to catch up on though so that will be good. Will have to pop in every now and again so this thread stays in my list.

MoNigheanDonn · 03/11/2017 09:34

Shock just saw some pictures of L on Instagram! She has not aged as well as Claire.

Lessstressedhemum · 03/11/2017 09:40

No, she doesn't invent electricityGrin. When she and Roger have to travel back to the future, she gets a job with Scottish Hydroelectric because they buy Lallybroch so that the kids can be near their ancestors.

Honestly, you should read the later books. They are completely addictive and I say this as someone who has never read any other romance, chick lit or anything like that. I am a confirmed fantasy reader with a bit of historical fiction mixed in (Sansom, Cornwell, Igguldon etc) who pokes fun at folks who read romantic novelsBlush. Outlander is my guilty not-so-secret.

I loved the first book on the whole, even though it was incredibly daft (wolves and magic sex pools) and there were some glaring errors in it.

However from then on, the whole tone and pace changed and I skim read the ones I actually did read. And then completely forgot what happened in them, bizarrely.

Possibly, as said before, if I’d read them before to saw the show I might have felt differently.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/11/2017 09:46

Where have you seen the Laoghaire pics @MoNigheanDonn?

MoNigheanDonn · 03/11/2017 09:49

On the fraserbridgebr page on Instagram. They were posted two days ago, you need to scroll down a touch as hey post alot.

MoNigheanDonn · 03/11/2017 09:50

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/11/2017 09:55

Thanks Smile

Crikey, you’re right. Especially since the actress who plays her is in her 20’s, I think? I notice in the trailers they haven’t really aged Jenny either, not even a grey hair. It’s a bit inconsistent, especially since Ian looks so much older.

Lessstressedhemum · 03/11/2017 10:04

I think that is probably more like what an almost 40 year old woman of the time would have looked like. No wonder Jamie is so blinded by Claire's beauty!

OP posts:
FridgeCut · 03/11/2017 10:06

Gosh, she looks rough as a badger. They've done a very good job at making her look old, but yes, it is character ageing. The unliked characters look dreadful.

MoNigheanDonn · 03/11/2017 10:27

Yes it's well done but just makes Claire look too young...though if in the books a big deal is made of her looking younger than I suppose that helps. I follow way too many outlander pages on social media now haha

quirkychick · 03/11/2017 11:41

Blimey, they have aged her up. I thought it would have been more interesting if Laoghaire hadn't been fat, frumpy and frigid, just that Jamie hadn't been happy with her. She's younger than Claire, only 16 in the first book iirc, and supposed to be very blonde and pretty. Jamie obviously finds her attractive at Castle Leoch, even if it is Claire he really wants. You would assume he would find Laoghaire at least attractive still to have married her. After all, much is made in the books about Frank still being an attractive man, although older than Claire.

ToniMumsnet · 03/11/2017 12:03

Wow, that's incredible makeup. A bit disturbing for the actress though. Surely Laoghaire is only 36ish. Seems quite extreme.

MoNigheanDonn · 03/11/2017 13:21

Just read some comments on that L pic and some saying it's photoshopped...oops!

AKAmyself · 03/11/2017 17:07

thanks for posting those pics! I love the behind the scenes stuff :)

more pictures of grown-up Fergus please!

MoNigheanDonn · 03/11/2017 20:30

Also wtf - Steven Cree who plays Ian Murray is actually quite a handsome man when he's no in a weird wig. Who knew!

AKAmyself · 03/11/2017 20:40

Yep, a lovely man!

snozzlemaid · 03/11/2017 21:02

Had a fab dream last night that I met SH. He was driving my car as for some reason I couldn’t drive.
After, I was just about to come on here and tell you all when I suddenly realised I hadn’t got a photo or autograph or anything! I spotted him again so rushed over to get a selfie with him but my bloody phone wouldn’t work. V frustrating.
Shame it wasn’t a sexy dream but was enjoyable meeting him all the same Grin

SenecaFalls · 03/11/2017 22:37

I have forgotten so much of the books. I may be completely lost when the new one comes out. Does anyone have any idea when that will be?

Really looking forward to the return to Lallybroch this weekend.
