This is off the top of my head so it might be wonky.

Margaret's sweetheart turned out to have been called Ewan (not Jamie Confused).

They end up in the Indies and the reverend turns out to be the prostitute murder. This is the night Claire meets LJG IIRC.

Margaret escapes and ends up in the jungle with the slave which Claire bought by accident (of course) performing some sort of pagan translation service with a crocodile. Claire meets them when she's looking for Jamie. Jamie finds them and recognises Margaret and then she speaks to them in Brianna's voice and then she tells them where to find Geillis/Ian.

Gawd. I'm not selling it!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/11/2017 19:01

Thank you greatwhites I can vaguely remember some of that.

So in the book, why did Miss Campbell come out of her stupor when Young Ian mentions Jamie if her bloke’s name was Ewan?! That whole scene is hinting that Miss Campbell had some kind of tryst with Jamie I also think that’s where DG was going, then changed her mind, or tried to create some kind of ridiculous suspense that doesn’t really work.

As someone has just mentioned, these books could’ve been brilliant if only an editor had had the balls to tell DG where she was going wrong.

ssd · 01/11/2017 19:27

I've never even heard of outlander Blush

GreatWhites · 01/11/2017 19:29

AKAmyself · 01/11/2017 19:59

I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I have zero recollection of the entire Margaret Campbell plot. Confused

snozzlemaid · 01/11/2017 20:06

ssd Go on give it a go.* You can then come back when you’re hooked and chat.*
Aka me neither. So many characters and storylines have disappeared from my brain completely. Which I quite like when watching as I don’t always know what’s going to happen.

snozzlemaid · 01/11/2017 20:07

Complete bold failure there Blush

quirkychick · 01/11/2017 20:14

I think Ewan was with Jamie and Claire in the lead up to Culloden, and with Jamie when Lord Melton was executing the traitors. The whole Margaret Campbell thing is, erm, a bit messy. It's implied that it's Jamie she was following, then it appears not to be. Also the whole Haiti voodoo crocodile thing... I think the scriptwriters are trying to prepare us by having Margaret be a seer when we first meet her rather than a woman suffering ptsd after Culloden with a religious nut of a brother.

I keep watching Black Sails wondering what they are going to use for Voyager.

Lessstressedhemum · 01/11/2017 20:26

Euan was one o
F the men who carried Jamie off the field at culloden. He was in Jamie's detachment of soldiers, so Margaret would have known Jamie from that. She was following his troop.
I don't mind the Loa voodoo thing, but all the coincidences are a bit mad. She really needs a heavy handed, brave editor to take her in hand.

Only popping in, wish I could read all the posts but I'm still only on the second book and don't want the spoilers. :( (Anyone want a spoiler free thread?)

Just wanted to share that I'm really enjoying the Loinlander podcast. It's a Canadian husband and wife. She's a fan and knows the books, he's more critical but still has interesting points to make.

itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=1282099814. or search for Loinlander if using different podcast app.

AKAmyself · 02/11/2017 11:23

I would look up that podcast, thanks Mist!

Am I the only one who really struggled to follow the dialogue during the last episode? Admittedly I had a blinding headache and I’m not a native English speaker (though that never ever interferes before!) but I really felt that they were mumbling a lot of the time.

Either that or I’ve gone stupid :)

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/11/2017 11:32

No you aren’t the only one, aka. I’m having trouble with that too.

Had to rewind it a couple of times of ep 6 and not for the reasons you might think Wink

HelloMist · 02/11/2017 12:01

That's ok aka! I found some dialogue hard to catch too. I find subtitles distracting but have had to turn them on for bits of the episodes recently.Sad I still like the Scottish accents though even if that's part of the difficulty.

Lessstressedhemum · 02/11/2017 14:08

I dont have a problem with the dialogue, but then I'm Scottish. I really like the fact that they mostly have actual Scottish people speaking in real Scottish accents.

Hello, long time lurking, NC to something more appropriate.

Just finished an Echo in the Bone.. Spoiler alert..
these books are getting worse! Very weird plot twist at the end, does anyone else feel like the same plot devices are being used repeatedly? No choice but to get married.. Really? Then just had sex because they were both feeling a bit sad?? Must have been a couple of weeks only after she thought j was dead?? Squeezed alot of action in last few pages after pages of boring military stuff..

Re current series, i have almost got over being very annoyed they didn't sort it out so she went back 20 years ago. Surely Jamie should be looking pretty haggard by now? All those battles and illnesses, I would have thought he should be missing a few teeth at least. YY Fergus is great, and young Ian has potential to grow into an interesting man ??

I don't know why it's such compulsive reading/ viewing?? Is it because the story continues after the happy ever after usual trite going off into the sunset bit? Because he adores her so much even having been married so long ? Because he's such a great mixture of humour, strength and gentleness???? I don't know why I'm so into it, not been like this with anything else, watched and read all Poldarks, but was nothing compared to Outlander obsession... Sorry, guest post on this thread and I'm ranting

HRoosevelt · 02/11/2017 14:23

*first post on this thread

quirkychick · 02/11/2017 14:37

HRoosevelt you are not alone Smile. Great username btw.

I think I accept on one level that it's all a bit ridiculous, but that it makes it very exciting and emotional. The only books I can think of similar batshit addictive plot are the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles, where you just don't know what's happening next, and have lots of slightly dodgy sex, violence, history etc.

VeganIan · 02/11/2017 14:58

For much of the last two books I was skipping bits to get back onto characters I was actually invested in, rather than read about the ones DG had introduced entirely (I'm guessing) so that she can write another series about them when Claire and Jamie are too old to be galavanting about. So much travelling from here to there are and ooh look how good Claire is as a doctor and how wonderful Bree is at being miserable inventing and how boring Poor Roger is and let's do all that while we swoon over Jamie.

quirkychick · 02/11/2017 17:01

Vegan I did get a bit lost with all the American War of Independence stuff, but maybe that's just because I'm not American and so don't have great knowledge of it. I do like Young Ian and Rachel, though. Claire and Jamie are obviously immortal, though Wink.

YY. There was no way that Jamie and Claire would have gone separately over the Atlantic. No way. Plus Claire hates LJG's guts and she's nearly 60 by that point... not a daft twenty something.

GreatWhites · 02/11/2017 17:05

I like Rachel too. Skipped all of the Dottie and William bits.

gamerwidow · 02/11/2017 19:13

The books are rubbish but I think the character of Jamie is just so well realised that it keeps drawing me back despite the other nonsense. I could read about Jamie and Claire pottering around Frasers ridge forever.
They’re not literary greats but not every book you read has to be on the Booker long listGrin

LonelyOversharer · 02/11/2017 19:14

Oh god, I love Outlander, it's so compulsive, and I can't wait for monday, but I think I'm going to give up reading the books! It sounds like they just get more batshit.

Who is Rachel? See, now I want to read on six thousand pages to find out. Conclusion: DG is clearly a witch.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/11/2017 19:21

You aren’t selling the later books, to be honest lassies Grin

I’ve just looked up the synopsis of a couple and they sound insane. Why can’t DG just end the flaming series instead of recycling these stupid plot lines? All of the main characters have been raped or at least violently assaulted in one way or another and 2 or 3 have gone missing, believed dead so that their partner has just had to get married/engaged to some other random character 🙄
