Just watched ep 7. Poor Jamie, claire returns & days (or was it hours?) later his print shop is burnt to ashes.

Agree CBs breasts def seem bigger

AKAmyself · 01/11/2017 05:34

I don’t want to say I’m disappointed by episode 7, But it’s going in the direction I expected, too much bloody silly plot to cover. I fear it’s only going to get worse from here.

I agree that Claire going all ER was grating. I hope she won’t be doing this all the time now. Jamie is as usual an absolute saint to put up with her. Could it be the bigger boobs (which I haven’t noticed yet!).

But Fergus, wow. He’s wonderful

quirkychick · 01/11/2017 07:00

Maybe part of the problem is they've taken till episode 6 to get to the reunion, by fleshing out all the Boston bits, whereas the book it's about a third of the way through. Now they've had to cram lots of plot into one episode, even if they have cut lots down. They need to establish the danger Jamie is in, to justify returning to Lallybroch and the later staying in the New World.

Just when it appeared that older Claire had mellowed... er no.

breadwidow · 01/11/2017 07:35

Yep, I didn’t like it that much either. Also not even a kiss between Jamie and Claire!

snozzlemaid · 01/11/2017 07:53

I agree Fergus is lovely. Perfect casting.
Here's hoping we get a lovefest for him and Marsali. They can fill in the gaps when J &C aren't getting on so well.

ssd · 01/11/2017 08:02

please tell me what you are all talking about!!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/11/2017 08:31

@ssd do you mean what programme? It’s Outlander.

Am I the only one who enjoyed this episode? Confused It felt more like the first series. Claire and Jamie are building their relationship again after 20 years of not knowing each other, but it felt so familiar. Mainly, Claire is back to being an idiot and I’m wondering if they’ve done that on purpose considering what’s coming next, btw.

And they’ve cut out a lot of the boring stuff from the book. (Even though Voyager is a lot tighter than the later books, there’s still loads of boring, unnecessary description and dialogue).

AKAmyself · 01/11/2017 09:03

I didn’t not enjoy it, if that makes sense. I just don’t care much for the rollicking pace of misfortunes that befall the Frasers from now on, and the go-go-go approach to piling the plot on.

It was ok in season one and two as the stakes were that much higher (uprising, culloden, Black jack Randall etc), but I just can’t care enough about corrupt excise officials and smuggling French Brandy.

AKAmyself · 01/11/2017 09:04

Here’s hoping, as well, that Marsali is not actually as 14, because eww

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/11/2017 09:22

Yes, but that’s the source material surely? I don’t think anyone really cared about the intricate political machinations of 18th Century highlanders in S2 but the writers have to work with what they’re given. And tbf, even though Voyager is a lot tighter than the later books, there’s still a ton of unnecessary, boring dialogue and description and outright silliness.

It must be difficult trying to work out which bits of the books to keep and which not to bother with. They have to navigate between ‘what the fuck is this?’ for non-book readers and ‘I cannot believe they missed that out’ for fans of the book.

MoNigheanDonn · 01/11/2017 09:36

I liked it Courtney

Wikipedia has the names of the rest of the episodes now Grin only 6 episodes to go!

Just found this on Lauren Lyle's Instagram from a few months ago. I assume they will age her up if she is only 14 in the books...same as they did in GoT for the central characters.

Just realised I repeated myself a bit in my last two posts Confused apologies, I have a bit of a Halloween hangover.

quirkychick · 01/11/2017 10:55

They aged Young Ian up, I'm sure he was 14 in Voyager and lost his virginity in the brothel. 16 and to a barmaid he fancies is a little more palatable.

I think the books and storyline are enjoyable and exciting but they are written from a how-exciting-dramatic-can-I-make-this angle. Which does, inevitably leas to a bit of silliness. I do like the richness of the details etc. but they definitely could do with stricter editing. I might have to rewatching episode 7, there seems a lots to fit in.

I love Outlander despite the plot, rather than because of it. I also think the show is amazingly strong at all the emotional, character driven pieces (though has anyone else noticed how much flatter the whole thing is without Tobias Menzies to up the stakes?!?) but very uneven on the more swashbuckling segments. So for example I thought the battle scenes have been very good, anything taking place in the open Scottish countryside has been grand, but I don’t think any of the Paris capers or the Edinburgh segments have been particularly dynamic or exciting.

And actually maybe I love outlander because of a single character - Jamie. There are other characters I am fond of - roger, young Ian, even Claire, bless her - but without Jamie at its core, this whole thing would not exist.

I completely agree. But I felt like that reading the books. I hate the fact that DG moved the action to America and personally (and probably controversially) I don’t think Jamie would’ve ever left Scotland to make a home elsewhere.

MoNigheanDonn · 01/11/2017 13:13

I really didn't enjoy the France episodes at all, couldn't wait for them to come back to Scotland.

Lessstressedhemum · 01/11/2017 13:56

A lot of Scots left for the colonies then. I don't think Jamie would have willingly left Scotland. He would just have kept going with inciting sedition until he got himself hanged. However, he would do anything to protect those he loves, especially Claire. Without her, he would have stayed put, despite the extreme danger he personally was in.

I quite liked the France stuff, it was just another way of fighting for family and country. And I enjoyed this episode. Claire is back to her belligerent, bossy, stupid self and Jamie to his patient, tolerant self. They are both trying to reestablish their relationship after 20 years of sadness, loneliness and bitterness. It must be hard. There is a reason that I have never really taken to Claire and this week's episode is it in a nutshell.

quirkychick · 01/11/2017 14:01

I did enjoy it much more second time around. I especially liked Fergus and Young Ian, and Mr Willoughby is so much better than the blue-silked, back flipping, foot fetishising character of the books.

I agree that the show is much better at the emotional, character driven aspects of the story. I suppose it lends the "adventure" some realism.

GreatWhites · 01/11/2017 17:23

Maybe he should of run off with LJG!

Less hassle all round! Grin Grin Grin

I like Claire usually, but she was totally off in this episode. I suppose it is more realistic that everything isn't rosy.

I couldn't watch Young Ian losing his virginity. Noooo. Not the baby of the family!!!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 01/11/2017 18:22

It's fascinating how many of us (even those who loved the books) think that the changes that the scriptwriters have made have vastly improved the series.
Makes you wonder just how much better the books SHOULD have been.
I think I recall reading an interview with DG that she wrote the first book (which I think was originally called Cross Stitch) as a writing exercise and admitted that it was wobbly with facts, plot and some characters.
I suspect it was published without much editing (which it really needed) then it was a surprise success which meant that DG was given free reign to write the next few books unencumbered.

I read the first 2 and a half, but frankly got bored with too much padding and guff. They would have been much better with more editing (and less pages!)

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/11/2017 18:31

I’m kind of re-reading Voyager at the minute ( by God, it’s hard going) and I’ve just got to the bit with the Campbells (completely different to the show, btw).

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with this? It seems to be pointing to Miss Campbell’s ‘Highland man’ as being Jamie, but I can’t seem to recall if this was ever resolved or not?

GreatWhites · 01/11/2017 18:35

I was convinced this was going to be it. Convinced. I am sure DG must have been going that way and changed the ending.

Do you want all the spoilers?

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/11/2017 18:42

Yeah, hit me with the spoilers, I can handle it Grin
