MoNigheanDonn I have the boxed sets, I never watch the episodes with extra commentary but the extras are ok. I think there's a few bits about the costumes and stuff. You could probably find similar on YouTube tbh. I can't even really remember and I only watched them a month or so ago!

MoNigheanDonn · 31/10/2017 08:03

Thanks quirky maybe not worth it then

PenguinDi · 31/10/2017 08:24

I’m about a quarter through book 5 and finding it a real tough read, DG doesn’t like anyone in this book. What happened to the happy storyline.

Please tell me it gets better...

RaininSummer · 31/10/2017 08:35

I think Clare looks like a fifty year old woman can look now but definitely not how they would have looked in the 1960s let alone the 1760s. Not keen on young Ian but maybe he will improve as he gets tougher. I found last night's episode rather boring sadly.

Lessstressedhemum · 31/10/2017 08:51

So, I am the same age as Claire and can, sadly, only dream of having such non saggy boobs. To be fair, I don't have any wrinkles and my hair is still mostly dark, but not as lustrous a brown as it once was. And Jamie is much, much hotter than any 45 year old men I know, but has a body similar to my 49 year old brother who works out with weights daily and practices MMA, so it is possible. BUT, it wouldn't have been then.

In the books, much is made of how young Claire looks and how she can't tell anyone her real age because folk would think she was a witch.

My DH is nearing 50 and is equally young looking as Jamie, by some witchcraft or another. I am 35 and easily look the same age as him the bastard.

Dunlurking · 31/10/2017 09:12

What PenguinDi said. Reassurance would be nice. I don't want to have to resort to reading the storyline on wikipedia.

SeveredPixieBits · 31/10/2017 09:15

Um. Well, I'm nearing the end of book six. There are happy moments, but on the whole, no. It generally lurches from one miserable catastrophe to another.

Lessstressedhemum · 31/10/2017 09:49

I haveread all the books many times, and as Pixie says, while there are happy times, poor Jamie and Claire go from one "challenge" to the next with only the power of their love to conquer all. I like Fiery Cross, I know lots of people find it a hard read though.

My dp is 60 but looks 40 something (my age)! Definitely witchcraft Wink. I think in the books they are trying to show that people aged more quickly in the 18th century, except Jamie, of course. A lot of women would have been worn out by many pregnancies and childbirth, combined with a pretty poor diet and lots of alcohol!

quirkychick · 31/10/2017 11:13

Severed by the end of Book 6, I really felt sorry for Claire. I thought DG had it in for her. I did really enjoy reading them as they lurch from one excitement to another, but got a bit lost with all the battles/skirmishes to do with the war of independence.

LonelyOversharer · 31/10/2017 13:24

I'm stalled 3/4 of the way through book 6. I want them to be happy, and live a quiet peaceful life. I think DG is frankly lazy with her characters. So much could be made out of Fergus and his brood, but they got packed off to a town, never to be heard of again. I managed book 5 ok, but it wasn't the galloping couldn't-put-it-down book that the drums of autumn was.

Okay, so Claires breasts. Agree they do not belong to a 50 year old, but did they belong to CB? Much bigger than in season 1, and she must have had prosthetics or body doubles for the pregnant nudie shots in s2. Clever make up (like Jamies back and scars) I think as they're not fake round implants, and she's certainly not put on weight. I imagine it's much easier to do nude scenes if you've got a load of prosthetic body on! Was hoping she'd have a few silvery old stretch marks! A stretch too far, maybe.

On a side note I've started to watch Hell on Wheels on prime. Seems ok so far. Anyone else watched it, shall I persist? There's 5 seasons of it.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/10/2017 13:40

I couldn’t get through The Fiery Cross. I’d rather think of J & C as happily living out the rest of their days, peacefully, surrounded by their family. They deserve it instead of lurching from one rape scene to the next Hmm

Book 4 would have been a natural ending and I have a feeling that that is where the show will leave them (but who knows? Everyone, including Gabaldon, wants to keep that money machine rollin’ Confused).

Lessstressedhemum · 31/10/2017 13:57

My DD mentioned the breasts thing straight away last week. They are much bigger than before and her tummy is a little softer looking, it might be prosthetics or maybe she put on some weight? In the books, Claire has stretch marks, I was really hoping that they gave her some on TV. Alas, that would probably a step to far.

I hope it doesn't end after season 4, but I think that all the complaining going on on fan sites etc. may actually backfire on folk and mean the show is not renewed.

OP posts:
quirkychick · 31/10/2017 14:10

I thought she had bigger breasts too, perhaps bigger chests = 20yrs older for both C&J Halloween Grin.

I hadn't realised Book 4 was the original end, but that makes sense. I could see that you could easily squish books 5-8 into less, so maybe not a season each? I did really enjoy reading the books, but the earlier ones do have more structure, I think. It would be a shame if they stopped just because fans are complaining it is not the word-for-word-exactly-the-same as the books, it doesn't depart anywhere near as far as, say, GOT. I think the scriptwriters are generally doing a pretty good job, rounding some characters out, streamlining the story, adding other pov...

SenecaFalls · 31/10/2017 14:25

In the books, much is made of how young Claire looks and how she can't tell anyone her real age because folk would think she was a witch.

But the women in the brothel clocked her as being older. That actually was a bit jarring because in the book everyone who doesn't know her thinks she is much younger than she is.

mateysmum · 31/10/2017 16:22

Hmm... I finished book 4 last night and having read the comments on this thread I'm unsure whether to leave it there as a natural and reasonably happy ending or to plough on, accepting that the next books are not the best and a bit of a misery fest.

Is it worth it?

quirkychick · 31/10/2017 16:25

Although the women in the brothel said "Madame" doesn't take them older than 25, so they maybe think she's older than that. But yes, 30 might be considered getting on a bit then and lots is made of how old some women look before their time.

Dunlurking · 31/10/2017 16:29

Thanks for the lowdown on how book 5 continues. I think the way Claire spends so much time fussing over babies and nappy changing in the first bit was off-putting to me for starters although I did enjoy her chucking Jamie a nappy and telling him to wash it!

Lessstressedhemum · 31/10/2017 17:01

Matey, I would definitely read the rest of the books. They could do with a firm editorial hand but the story is good and Jamie just keeps getting better.

JuneFromBethesda · 31/10/2017 18:25

I'm sure I spotted a brothel wench who looked older than 25 in this episode Hmm hard paper round perhaps.

Well, that happy reunion didn't last long, did it?? She's only been back 48 hours and she's already getting stroppy! Sheesh.

Old Ian was the highlight of this episode for me. Particularly when he said he and Jenny had grieved for Claire for years Sad

AKAmyself · 31/10/2017 21:31

just finished episode 7 and i think I'm done with Jamie! how delectable is Fergus?!?

MoNigheanDonn · 31/10/2017 21:44

AKA Fergus is gorgeous!

JuneFromBethesda · 31/10/2017 22:07

I agree - lucky Marsali Grin

LonelyOversharer · 31/10/2017 22:08

I haven't seen the girl playing Marsarli yet, I take it she's really gorgeous and they're going to make a stunning pair?

Poor Jamie. Batshit bossy 20c Claire or whiny tantrummy Leerie. Maybe he should of run off with LJG!
