I think they've tried to pull together lots of threads from the books. One of the later books has Claire telling Jamie she's taken an oath to heal as a doctor (also, kind of shows she's still mentally in the 20th century - if a bit silly), and doesn't she put a hole in someone's head too, is it LJG? I forget. I really, really hope that next week's is less cringy than the book...

MoNigheanDonn · 30/10/2017 13:36

Neither of them seemed at all happy this episode. No way of have been trying to save my would be rapist that's for sure!

LonelyOversharer · 30/10/2017 13:40

Right, I have watched it twice already, oddly woke at 0520. Claire really annoyed me! First time ever she's annoyed me for just being stupid. Man tries to kill her, oopsy almost killed him, I know, I'll just try to fix him up, bugger the consequences. How tolerant Jamie is.

He was great, she was just annoying! And she pulled the parenting shit too. Well, she'll get hers next week. I wonder if I'll be feeling sorry for her once she knows. If they play her as having a tantrum and storming off then I doubt it. Very well done of the writers I think.

And we're obviously going to get the odd voodoo stuff, hopefully not the murders and religious righteousness, as he's a charlatan not a priest (the brother).

And a second nod to the wedding episode, no one had told young Ian that we don't all shag like horses either. Lovely scene though, and the barmaid/tart was young and pretty which was nice.

Am I weird that I've started counting how many times Jamie calls Claie Sassenach? Is it because he can't quite believe its her yet, or so the crazies will buy more sassenach tartan crap?

JuneFromBethesda · 30/10/2017 14:00

Am I weird that I've started counting how many times Jamie calls Claie Sassenach?

I've only watched a sneaky 5 minutes of Ep.7 so far (when I should have been tidying up the breakfast things Blush ) and I thought that too - Sassenach this, Sassenach that ...

Piffpaffpoff · 30/10/2017 14:49

I noted the overuse of Sassenach too...

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 30/10/2017 15:42

Over several episodes, I've been noticing Jamie's frequent use of "and I'm grateful..."
I guess it reflects a more religious viewpoint of the time

TwilightToniMumsnet · 30/10/2017 17:44

Mr Willoughby seems a much more likeable character in the series. He's a really silly in the books with the foot obsession and being fairly unhelpful. I'm glad they missed the whole smuggling bit.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/10/2017 17:52

Agree. He was more or less a cartoon in the book. I’ve started re-reading a bit of Voyager and at one point he’s described as doing a succession of backward flips like a flea or something.

And the less said about the foot fetish, the better.

Lessstressedhemum · 30/10/2017 17:55

Claire is such a self righteous bitch. Imagine pulling the parent card on Jamie Angry and she is as unreasonable as ever. I don't know how he puts up with her.
Isn't Fergus fabulous? Loved the "mon fils", very touching. Very emotional at the end, Jamie watching his life go up in flames. I haven't seen what the HH make of it yet. They will likely be furious that it departed quite a lot from the book.

Claire was a raging harpy in this episode and I usually like her. Sheesh.

Young Ian is not how I pictured him.

LonelyOversharer · 30/10/2017 19:02

Yy greatwhites I've always liked Claire, even reading her endless musings is ok. But she was just damned silly in this episode. I think the writers will twist us so we are rooting for her again next week!

GreatWhites · 30/10/2017 19:15

Who was it who predicted the worst UTI the morning after? Is the only explanation! Grin

Waytoogo · 30/10/2017 19:45

I loved this episode. I thought Old Ian's acting was superb, he is the first one who actually looked like he'd seen a ghost when he saw Claire. I found him quite uneventful in the last two series so was surprised he pulled such a great performance out of the bag. Although Ian is supposed to be a similar age to Jamie but has apparently aged at twice the rate.

I also enjoyed seeing some of Jamie's old sparkle and resourcefulness. And most importantly his hair seemed to have regained some of its old colour and texture!

Agree with earlier posters that Claire came across as pretty unlikeable and priggish. The parenting comment was pretty vicious in the circumstances!

Can't wait for next week to see how Claire deals with the news of Laoghaire.

SeveredPixieBits · 30/10/2017 20:09

So looking forward to next week!

Claire was unbelievably awful this week. I think I've got muscle strain from all the eye rolling I did.

I really like Young Ian's portrayal, and of course Fergus is lovely. (I still miss little Fergus though). Totally missed mons fils so will have to watch it again tomorrow.

DryWhiteagainW · 30/10/2017 21:03

Well we will have to replace the "Mark me" drinking game with "sassernach" .....agree it's a bit much.

Love Ypung Ian and Fergus, great double act. Think Fergus is adorable and the actor will do very very well, there's a gap for sexy young Frenchman.

The "mon fils" reminded me of "I love you like a son" just before Culloden.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/10/2017 21:11

Young Ian definitely grew on me this episode although talk of his ‘fivehead’ on the reddit Outlander forum had me lolling this morning.

Old Ian was great and yes to whoever said he’s aged more appropriately than C&J. Also love Fergus which is great as I didn’t really take to Older Fergus in the book.

Don’t know why the writing has been so repetitive this season though. I cringed every time Jamie said ‘Christ!’ last episode as well (he must have said it about 50 times). Surely the actors are noticing this stuff as they’re saying it?

GreatWhites · 30/10/2017 21:19

Old(er) Fergus just looks as though he'd be the life and soul of the Christmas party. He has that sort of face Grin

SeveredPixieBits · 30/10/2017 21:58

Courtney I felt that older book Fergus was lacking too. He has the potential to be such a great character, and he should be so close to Jamie and Claire but he feels really disconnected compared to Young Ian.

snozzlemaid · 30/10/2017 22:26

Hmmm. Not sure what I think about that episode. On first watch not all that keen.
Far too many Sassenachs from Jamie and J&C not exactly getting on too well.
I’ve not really liked Claire at all this season so far. Thought she might improve when back with Jamie but nope not happened yet.
I’m really liking Fergus and Young Ian and loved seeing Ian again. Looking forward to Lallybroch next week.
Don’t think I had any moments in this episode that moved me.
I need to rewatch and see if it improves for me.

Lessstressedhemum · 30/10/2017 22:48

I think adult Fergus is another character that DG doesn't like very much. She could have done so much with him but has never really developed him at all. I like this Fergus much better so far.
Claire has always annoyed me, tbh. It was just worse this episode than usual. She was even more of a Harridan than book Claire.

I think that there is more than a bit of ageism in the way that both the books and the series age Jamie and Claire. They don't look much older than they did in series one and two, yet Claire is at least 50 and Jamie s in his mid-late 40s. I think the DG and the creators assume that not many people want to watch actual older-looking people as romantic figures. And, sadly, they are probably right.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 31/10/2017 01:37

They don’t look any older than 30s at a push —especially since Claire dyed her hair—

I fancy the pants off old Ian and I’m not ashamed to admit it Grin

SenecaFalls · 31/10/2017 01:43

I fancy the pants off old Ian and I’m not ashamed to admit it

A sentiment I share if truth be told. Smile

AngeloMysterioso · 31/10/2017 04:18

Blimey, we’ve known young Ian less than 24 hours and already we’re watching him lose his virginity!

MoNigheanDonn · 31/10/2017 06:07

Haha Angelo

Does anyone have the DVD box sets? I have season 1 & 2 digitally so don't have any of the extras and just wondered if worth getting the dvds?
