GBBO - opinions?

What are people's opinions on the new Bake Off so far? And yes, I know we're only a few minutes in. IMO the new presenters feel a bit like they're trying a little too hard to be Mel and Sue.

Opinions?

Better than BBC.

Mel and Sue got up their own arses because they presented a baking show. No more shit history segment. Prue will hold no punches.

MusicToMyEars800 · 29/08/2017 21:29

I enjoyed it, I will be watching next week.
Hair You can watch some of the old episodes on Really (channel 17 on freeview) at 7pm, that's what I've been doing Grin

InsomniacAnonymous · 29/08/2017 21:30

I preferred it to the original, which I wasn't expecting at all. I like Sandi Toksvig, wasn't expecting to like Noel Fielding and Pru Leith, but both were absolutely fine. I was never a fan of Mel and Sue. They were a bit overpowering and sometimes even spoiled the things the contestants had made by being overly keen on touching and tasting things while the baking was going on.

Even the ad breaks were a positive to me, as I watched on the portable TV which I can't pause, so the ad breaks made it possible to nip out to the kitchen when I needed to, without missing anything. I hope it gets good reviews.

Found a few old episodes on DailyMotion (sounds like your toilet habits). Going to console myself with one of those I think.

I'm sure the shit history bits will be back when there are fewer bakers and more time to fill. There's never any of the extra gumph in the early shows as there are too many bakers.

Cherrypi · 29/08/2017 21:38

The problem with the ad breaks is it gave me a chance to rustle up some drop scones. I miss Mel and Sue. I like it when Sandi calls people darling though.

Cakeandmarshmallows

Repeated loads - one on the 2nd at 1600 on E4 Smile

redfragglebiker · 29/08/2017 21:39

I feel like I should hate it out of loyalty to Mary, Mel and Sue but I honestly thought it was okay! Those showstoppers were incredible for week one!!

GetOutOfMYGarden · 29/08/2017 21:43

LemonRedwood Ads are more important ;)

Dulra · 29/08/2017 21:46

I enjoyed it. Liked pru she was a good replacement for Mary. I think noel and sandi did well and I think they will settle in as they get to know the contestants better. My kids thought noel was hilarious. Ad breaks a pain so paused it got kids to bed and caught up by the end.

MissTify · 29/08/2017 21:48

For me, Noel and Sandi just aren't working. Noel seems nervous and uncomfortable and Sandi seems to lack enthusiasm. I'm wracking my brains trying to think of more suitable presenters. I actually think Sarah Cox would be really good, possibly paired with Claudia Winkleman. Apart from that, I can only think of Ant and Dec!

Pigeonpair1 · 29/08/2017 21:49

I thought it was great! Personally I couldn't stand Sue Perkins so happy she has gone. Prue Leith is a fantastic replacement for Mary Berry and she really knows her stuff. Sandy Toksvig and Noel Fielding were pretty unobtrusive and I would be happy for them to stay that way.

The only downside for me was the advert breaks!

NotJustThreeSmallWords · 29/08/2017 21:50

I liked it!
Wasn't the biggest fan of Mel and Sue, they were ok - but found Mary so smug. Would like to see a bit of banter between Paul and Noel once he stops acting like the office temp

crazyhorses3 · 29/08/2017 21:50

Don't like the pace of it. It's far too fast, cutting between scenes at high speed. It just feels garbled and irritating. There is no chemistry at all between Sandi and Noel. I don't like Sandi anyway, she grates on me. Noel is just a floppy nothing. Prue seems good but it is just too fast paced and isn't engaging me at all. The so called 'humour' is just painful and doesn't work. Really miss Mel and Sue.

InsomniacAnonymous · 29/08/2017 21:51

"I actually think Sarah Cox would be really good, possibly paired with Claudia Winkleman."

Good grief. I couldn't disagree more.

Heyx · 29/08/2017 21:51

Really liked it. Not sure about Noel and think he was an unusual choice.

PodgeBod · 29/08/2017 21:52

I actually prefer it. I'm not a Mel and Sue fan and I'm looking forward to Noel gaining a bit of confidence- not seen Sandi in anything before. Prue seems alright, again not seen her before.
But I really like the challenges! Things I've actually heard of and flavours I might actually order off of a menu. Loved the illusion cakes.
I recorded it so fast forwarded the adverts anyway. I don't watch the BBC much (apart from CBeebies) so adverts don't bother me.

Damia · 29/08/2017 21:52

That watermelon looked amazing

Timefortea99 · 29/08/2017 21:54

I was not going to watch it but my DH recorded it for me and I watched it half an hour later than it aired. Just zipped through the ads. I used to do the same for BBC version - zapped through the historical segments.

My verdict - I loved it. Felt the same but better. Preferred it to the BBC version which got a bit stale, no pun intended.

Mel and Sue got on my nerves the last few series so I am happy with Sandi and mischievous Noel. Judges work well too.

Mix of contestants is good, the standard is high, the challenges are hard. That last round, some of those cakes were mind blowing. I will be watching the rest of the series.

Finola1step · 29/08/2017 21:57

Really enjoyed it. By then I really like Sandi and Noel anyway.

cariadlet · 29/08/2017 21:57

Didn't like the new presenters as much as the old ones. I thought Pru was a bit cold. Mary's warmth used to be a good balance to Paul who can be a bit harsh.

But I did like that that the tent and the format were exactly the same - except for the bloody adverts. And some of the showstoppers were amazing.

missyB1 · 29/08/2017 22:00

Noel did better than I thought he would, Sandi just needs to relax a bit and be herself. Prue is ok but lacking personality. Paul his usual arrogant smug self.
Is it only me that cringes massively when he does that stupid handshake thing?

woodhill · 29/08/2017 22:00

I quite liked it minus the annoying adverts which I muted.

I got fed up with Sue's severe expression and silly voices tbh so preferred Noel

MoonPower · 29/08/2017 22:02

Love Noel. Prue is great too 👍🏼

MoonPower · 29/08/2017 22:03

Adverts = SO irritating 😠
