WARNING: HERE BE DRAGONS (probably) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 5 "EASTWATCH"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 14th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. Only three more episodes to go this season!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

Only just watched episode 5 this evening (we've been away).

"I thought you might still be rowing" Grin

JAPAB · 18/08/2017 23:20

"I thought you might still be rowing"

I wonder if someone would someone explain that reference?

I found it interesting that Sam mentioned in being years since he helped Bran. I had wondered how much time has passed since the start, but would have thought it more like a year perhaps.

JAPAB · 19/08/2017 01:48

Ah, so its a fan joke.

On another note I was amused by an exchange in South Park where someone explained what a Direwolf was "They'd like wolves...only dire".

JAPAB · 19/08/2017 01:49

"They're like wolves...only dire"

Mustang27 · 19/08/2017 09:21

Love south park (hangs head in shame) I'm

Aridane · 19/08/2017 19:44

Is there a thread for episode 6?

AryaUnderfoot · 19/08/2017 19:58

This is a threa for people who have already seen it (as it was leaked on Tuesday evening).

An 'official' thread will be created on Sunday.

Aridane · 19/08/2017 20:53

Thanks!

Oddlookingeyes · 19/08/2017 22:54

Adding my theory on gendry...scanned thread and no one mentioned it yet ! I think he will turn out to be the one smith who can work / create valerian steel. He was in the forge in kings landing when Ned was there...so probably there when Neds big broadsword ice was split into 2 swords after he was killed...one of the new ones was widows wail (the one Joffrey had), not sure who got the others.

PonderLand · 19/08/2017 23:24

JAPAB I looked up the rowing comment and it was made because the last time gendry was on the show he was rowing away. I think the actor made a reference to 'still rowing' on twitter when season 4 came out too.

AryaUnderfoot · 20/08/2017 08:01

Oddlookingeyes

Gendry was long gone from KL when Ice was re-forged. He left with Yoren and Arya after Ned's beheading. Tywin organised the reforging of Ice after the Battle of the Blakwater and before Joffrey's wedding to Margery.

Widow's Wail is currently with Jaime. The other sword was Oathkeeper which he gave to Brienne when he sent her off to find the Stark sisters. She still has it.

Oddlookingeyes · 20/08/2017 08:08

So much for my musings then ayra. Thank you for the steely info 😃 Still think his smith skills will come into it somehow - besides wielding that massive hammer 😆

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 20/08/2017 09:00

Do we really need an official thread as well as the spoiler thread? We'll all be discussing the same episode after all. Can't the Sky viewers just filter onto the spoiled thread in the same way as people normally do who watch on Monday evening? Or is it full of spoiler details from episode 7 as well?

QuentinSummers · 20/08/2017 10:43

I think so too Odd. I feel somewhat like I'm not "in the gang" on these threads but last episode I mentioned I think that the dragonglass could be forged into Valyrian steel maybe with dragon fire - after this episode I thought Gendry might be the person to do it. Maybe he is going to figure out how on his trips beyond the wall
(PS I did Google this after last week but appear to be the only person thinking it apart from a random redditor- and have not read any leaks)

QuentinSummers · 20/08/2017 10:45

By "not in the gang" I mean noone responded to my amazing theory Grin I'm too needy for MN

maggiso · 20/08/2017 11:36

Talking of Neds sword Ice, surely the sword should have been returned to his family? Melting it down was mean. But then declaring him a traitor and chopping his head off was pretty mean.
Quentin, I agree, Gendry with his sword making skills may be significant. I also wonder what caused the doom of Valeria- and wether Westeross might be going the same way?

Puffpaw · 20/08/2017 12:22

quentin I had the same on an earlier thread, I may have posting under a different name, but in any event I agree with you and odd I also wondered if gendry was the pwwp as he could forge a sword. Maybe dany will turn out to be Nissa nissa.

AdalindSchade · 20/08/2017 12:49

Please can we have a new thread tonight? I don't want to join a conversation that has been going on for days.

OlennasWimple · 20/08/2017 17:08

New thread for the next episode here

Great stuff!. Not long now....

Trills · 20/08/2017 20:57

I think that the dragonglass could be forged into Valyrian steel maybe with dragon fire

Dragonglass (obsidian) already kills white walkers. There's no need for it to be turned into anything, you just need to put a handle on it.

Also insofar as physics matters here, you don't turn obsidian into any kind of steel.

AryaUnderfoot · 20/08/2017 21:21

I think Gendry could re-work Oathkeeper/Widow's Wail into some kind of 'Ice reborn' at the end of season 8, but I don't think he'll be mastering the art of forging new Valyrian Steel.

It is implied that Valyria Steel requires magic from some sort of fire-Mage to forge it, and possibly some sort of blood sacrifice. The art was lost in the Doom. I think the 'recipe' could turn up in the book series, but I don't think it would have anything to do with Gendry.

I have found the whole dragonglass killing wights storyline a bit jarring to be honest. It is fire that kills wights in the book series and dragonglass/Valyrian Steel kills White Walkers. Sam tries to kill a Wight with his obsidian blade in the books and it just shatters.

Mind you, that's just he least of my problems with this season...

Trills · 20/08/2017 21:27

Ice reborn is wasteful.

Two monster-killing swords are better than one.

AryaUnderfoot · 20/08/2017 21:31

I utterly agree that Ice reborn is wasteful, but I'm talking show not book. At he moment, I'd put nothing past D&D.

These are the people who have brought us Operation Grab-a-Wight to prove to Cersei the threat of the undead!

Puffpaw · 20/08/2017 21:40

Maybe gendry is busy forging a sword for Jon, then when melisandre rocks up gendrykills her with it, she combines with sword to be new light-bringer. Gendry has reason to fear melisandre and she is very magical and firey
