WARNING: HERE BE DRAGONS (probably) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 5 "EASTWATCH"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 14th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. Only three more episodes to go this season!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

Sorry I wasn't very clear, I'm interested in tyrions relationship with the dragons (not Dany) and the fact he is the only other person to get close to them. Getting close to them is unusual and impressive, we think Jon can because of his targ blood, so why can tyrion?

Puffpaw · 15/08/2017 23:05

middle but I'd have nightmares after a visit to the natural history museum!

HolyShmoly · 15/08/2017 23:07

Ah I forgot that it was Jon Connington wot got the grayscale.

I meant that all the maesters are fecking idiots. Maester Broadbent seems to have some wits, but they are definitely not what they once were. Nothing is in Westeros.

Puffpaw · 15/08/2017 23:08

Interesting article Margot (also interested to hear about Tom, poor Geoffrey)

Middleoftheroad · 15/08/2017 23:18

Sam's suggestion that the arch maesters could let all the other maesters have access to the writings from the Citadel about the long night (or something like that) so they could defeat the WW once and for all was simple and genius. Poor Sam, he thought the Citadel would be so different. Tle learned scholars, supposed to have all the answers, and they seem like a bunch of closed minded sanctmonious old cretins. Hmmm reminds me of another seat of power.....

Then again, Sam didn't listen to Gilly!

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 15/08/2017 23:46

Puffpaw there's always the possibility that Tyrion has Targaryen blood too. If I remember rightly, his mother was once a favourite of the mad king's. And Tywin always did really hate him. This episode took great pains to remind us of that with Tyrion's emphatic lament, hammering home that he "hated me for being what I am...as if I chose to be born this way" or words to that effect.
Tywin himself once said that he only accepted Tyrion as his son because he couldn't prove that he wasn't. At the time, it seemed he was just being his ruthless, cruel self and blaming Tyrion for being less than perfect. But now I wonder if he meant that literally...and he really had reason to believe that Tyrion wasn't his...?

If I remember correctly from the books there are references to the wedding night bedding ceremony of Tyrions mother and rumours that the Mad King took liberties because he was infatuated with her.
Also , the dragon has 3 heads (Targaryen sigil) Dany has 3 dragons and wonders herself who the riders will be.

Straycatblue · 16/08/2017 01:51

Sorry should have added, that there were other rumours about the Mad King pursuing Joanna (Tyrions mum) later on as well that could match the timeline of Tyrions conception as obviously her wedding night was years before Tyrion was born.

JAPAB · 16/08/2017 02:18

Probably been mentioned, but shouldn't Jon be immune to fire?

CaptainWarbeck · 16/08/2017 02:33

Jon's half Stark though. Daenerys is full Targaryen. Wonder if that makes a difference?

TizzyDongue · 16/08/2017 07:18

If Cersie is pregnant I wonder if the baby will be a dwarf like his or her uncle and so Cersie will refuse to recognise the baby as hers (Ok slightly unusual move for a woman but there was that talk from Tyrion to Jamie about his being born a dwarf and not accepted by his father and there has been a lot of talk about Dany not being like her father so by contrast Cersei is like hers) no clue what this may mean to the plot but it will mean the prophercy is still correct with the whole 3 for you bit. Maybe.

Also wondering here if Olenna is actisllu dead - only because we need to see actualy death to know they are dead (then even then we can't be sure)

Also not sure what significance that'd have, her being alive, as I feel like I'm constantly chasing my tail with GoT!! It's only this thread and summaries that keep me half aware who's who only use really cottoned on Dickon was Samwell's brother just and who knows who, and what has happened in the lesser plots and often main plot

The boom Samwel gave little Sam did that contain the text Gilly was reading? Do like she'll be the one to recall either way (the "That's the number of steps not shits" has shown that whilst her reading is still not marvellous she's an ability to recall well).

WestleyAndButtockUp · 16/08/2017 07:18

Tyrian's turned into a bit of a boring bastard. Where's all the spark that made him such an attractive character?

Ditto Jamie.

Jon Snow always was dull.

TizzyDongue · 16/08/2017 07:19

Yes JAPAB - this will be the way Dany will cotton on he's Targaryan same way she was

AryaUnderfoot · 16/08/2017 07:20

There is a history of non-Targaryan dragon-riders though. During the Dance of the Dragons there were non-Targaryans recruited to fight for Rhaenyra.

In the books Dany notices that her dragons 'like' the sellsword commander Brown Ben Pllumm, who later goes on to betray Dany when it looks like she's losing (although he has Targ blood in a distant ancestor).

I think Tyrion is Lannister through and through. That doesn't mean he won't ride a dragon.

TizzyDongue · 16/08/2017 07:35

The maesters to me jusy came across as arrogant - really unable to accept anyone could know anything unless they were as super intelligent as they were. They assume read a lot (but evidently not everything) up with intelligence. They don't accept (or want to accept) that knowledge can come from elsewhere such as outside the citadel walls and also from a non learned person.

3EyedRaven · 16/08/2017 08:06

GRRM has explicitly stated that Targ blood is not requisite for riding a dragon.
Though rare, non targs have ridden dragons in the past. Being able to ride dragons is common, but not exclusive to Valyrians, so whilst being a common Valyrian trait there are plenty of Valyrians who couldn't, and a few non-Valyrians who could.
I think if Tyrion does transpire to be a dragon rider he'll be one of the rare exceptions.
I'd hate for him to be a secret Targ to be honest, I think his whole story will have lost a lot of its poignancy, and Tywin and Cersei will be vindicated in their treatment of him.

I also don't like how for a house that's been 'ruined' (destroyed) there's potentially the same amount of them as the starks!

QueenoftheAndals · 16/08/2017 08:33

If JS is son of Raegar and Lyanna does that make him heir to both thrones?

Not if being King in the North depends on being the son of Ned Stark. In which case it passes to Bran but given he's in no position to rule, it'd be Sansa. She and Arya would make a formidable ruling team if they could just set aside their differences.

maxiflump1 · 16/08/2017 09:14

This made me chuckle today. Shows the speed that Jon is moving at compared to the undead!!

I'm starting to think Arya's wee speech to Sansa was to make her hate her a bit so that she can implement whatever plan she has. I really don't think Arya is that petty or maybe Sansa is that person and Arya sees right through her. As you can see I have no clue lol.

I just think Arya has a bigger picture in mind than just calling her sister spoiled and entitled. Plus there is no way she has become that stupid just because she is reunited with her sister.

Wtf does Bran not get them together and tell them wtf is going on though. He is failing them.

Mustang27 · 16/08/2017 09:18

@maxiflump1 oh god cringe that map is just embarrassing Confused love it though.

Trills · 16/08/2017 09:30

Everyone who's not a product of incest is half something.
Maybe that's why the Targs loved incest.

Tywin and Cersei will be vindicated in their treatment of him
Only if you believe that it's "right" to mistreat someone because of their ancestry.

Oblomov17 · 16/08/2017 10:41

My question re who Jon Snow should sleep with, re the fact he is so God damn sexy, was not a spoiler. It was just a general question based on watching last few episodes.

Aren't we allowed to discuss these type of frivolous things here?

I haven't read the books. I haven't seen any spoilers, and don't want to read any spoiler threads.

I was just suggesting, a general discussion, based on current episodes watched: who do we want him to sleep with. Can't he fall in love/produce a son, with someone sexy .........
