Thank you for the new thread. In S1 did we get clues that Joe Miller did it through the series or was it a complete surprise at the end? Because in this series it is either one of the too-obvious ones, or not obvious at all (band member, caterer...) Except - there have been a few subtle clues to it being the party venue owner - he conveniently found a sock (false evidence?) and tidied up the grounds after the party. It is also possible that he is only there part of the year.

We normally watch Broadchurch on the Tuesday after it goes out (DH works till about 8:30 on Monday evenings, gets in about 8:45 then potters about doing 'stuff'). We're definitely watching the last one As It Happens otherwise some blert will post spoilers / text with 'ooh I didn't think it was X'.

Just caught up with the latest episode.

I'm not sure why people keep saying it's 'Broadchurch style' for the killer to be someone we are not expecting. Yes Joe Miller was unexpected, but in series 2 it was the two most obvious guys who did it - fence guy and the little girls dad.

I think Katie has been raped before, although not necessarily by Aaron - i think that is why maybe she joined the police? She has already come out with several rape myths at the beginning, maybe even though it had happened to her, she really believed them (and had been blaming herself) and that's why she didn't report iyswim?

There has been a lot of rape myth busting in this series - a little ham fisted at times, but unfortunately i think it has to be made really explicit for people to get it Sad

I thought cath's 'of all the women at that party, why would anyone want to rape you' was brill - showing that people think that rape is all about sexual attraction when it really isn't. I think JH has been cast really well as Trish.

I think Trish might be a sex worker too.

There is no way that it will turn out that Trish is lying. No way.

I thought that when Leo's girlfriend said he owed her for lying and she said 'it will be expensive' and he said 'ooooh I'm up for anything' that maybe he is giving her money or gifts in exchange for sex? There is definitely some sort of controlling element there.

I think the light is a camera phone - i thought maybe Clive raped Trish and made his son film it, maybe that's why the son hates him so much?

The thing is, with the whole violent porn/50 shades abusive crap becoming so popular, it's possible that footage of a woman being tied up and gagged and then someone having sex with her could just count as regular porn, especially in the eyes of younger people who are bombarded with that shit all the time and are viewing the footage out of context Sad

Tested out a few of your theories on dh- he has no sleuthing ability whatsoever, and watches BC with the same enthusiasm he watches LocationLocation (ie. Watches it rather than taking an active role in solving the crime Grin)

Did what? Confused I thought S2 was all about Joe Miller's court case. Was there another crime as well?

Yes Confused there was a 19yr old babysitter and the little girl who saw her being killed iirc.

There were two murders anyway, of the little girl and the babysitter in Sandbrook that had happened before Danny Latimer was murdered but were unsolved. Series 2 was mainly about that - i had actually mostly forgotten about Joe's court case!

Yes, the failings of that investigation were alluded to throughout series 1 and were the reason hardy moved to broadchurch. So it stands to reason that series 3 is also linked in some way?

I think someone said on the last thread that the three series were written as a trilogy. So def reasonable to have a link in this series if that's true.

Wasn't hardy having some kind of relationship with the Welsh woman with the long hair? The necklace was one of the missing girls' and the Welsh woman stole it from hardy? It turned out that her partner had been having an affair with the babysitter I think and had killed (or accidentally killed) her and the Welsh lady had covered it up?
After series 3 is done I'm going to binge watch 1&2, I can't do it now because I'll get so confused!

Just rewatched S1 E1, both Joe and Tom Miller had a muted response to the news of Danny's death. Feels like they've had more time to process what has happened than other residents of BC. Joe asks Ellie if the police know what has happened and if we need to be concerned for our children. Tom asks if Danny's parents know.
Am liking PP theories that this is a trilogy story arc across the series and that Joe/Tom/Danny has not been fully explained yet

There was a case I know of.
A dad was convicted but I often wonder if a son was the real culprit as the wife stuck by her husband and most women wouldn't.
I won't write anything else about it due to libel laws. So please don't ask me.

I think I need to binge watch series 1, it's been so long that I can't remember completely what happened and how they found out it was joe or was it
