I mean the sentence in itself is an odd thing to say.
Made me suspect that the opposite must be true, if she's going to such an extent to convince both him and herself.
She's in denial. She knows something isn't right and doesn't want to admit it.
Maybe he has something about him, some fits, or memory loss, or did something very bad at his old school? That no one could prove? Or that he genuinely couldn't remember. Like a split personality.
Maybe severe anger problems. Like in a fit, and then can't remember anything about it?
