Is this going to be our new Revenge/Desparate Housewives fix? www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/feb/17/big-little-lies-nicole-kidman-and-reese-witherspoon-shine-in-masterful-twist-on-desperate-housewives

Just finished this and LOVED it. Thought the ending was great.

I do think they kept hinting at something between ed and madeline's daughter though..along with previous incidences of him staring at her pp have mentioned, in the last episode there's a lingering shot of him looking at her auction page then at the funeral he touches her and she pulls away. Very weird.

Clawdy · 29/04/2017 14:32

Didn't remotely see anything between Ed and step-daughter. In the book, Ed is a sweet, loving guy, which to me is exactly how he came over in the tv version. Sometimes people look too hard for unpleasant themes.

MdmeShoutalot · 29/04/2017 14:37

I thought there was something going on with Ed and his feelings for his stepdaughter in the book? Admittedly, it's been ages since I read the book so I could be confusing it with something else.

pogojojo · 29/04/2017 16:06

Er thanks but I really don't Grin.A lot of blogs have picked up on it too. And he also made a pervy comment to Bonnie, he certainly wasn't perfect in the TV version.

PenguinOfDoom · 29/04/2017 17:00

I finished it last week. It has to be one of my favourite series of all time. It was brilliantly filmed - I loved the silent sequences and the final one in the run up to the death was just superb. Watching realisation dawn on each of their faces said more than any words could have done.

The comment Ed made to Bonnie - I didn't see that as being deliberately pervy, it seemed to come across more that he opened his mouth without thinking and said something stupid.

picklemepopcorn · 29/04/2017 17:01

Yeah, he's really gauche. Foot in mouth kind of guy. We'll have to see.

yumyumpoppycat · 29/04/2017 17:13

I would agree that Ed is slightly off with Bonnie and his stepdaughter - not in a way where he would do anything but there is something not quite right. Actually that actor (Adam Scott) has been in a few things with sexual frustration as a theme - tv series tell me you love me he is in a couple at a relationship therapy, The overnight - a couple who end up almost having a foursome etc

MrsCobain · 29/04/2017 20:12

I haven't read the book and definitely picked up on something between Ed and the Step daughter a couple of times.

Howaboutthisone · 29/04/2017 22:26

Agree that in the book Ed was just genuinely lovely. I think there were extra elements to his character in the series anyway due to the added Madeleine affair which wasn't in the book. I thought that the lingering shots of him looking at Madeleine's eldest daughter were more about him knowing things that she hadn't confided in Madeleine as their relationship was so complex at that point. Maybe that's seeing it from the perspective of having read the book first where there was no hint at all of ed and stepdaughter issues though and I can see where people are coming from.

BuzzKillington · 09/05/2017 20:55

I have just binged watched this. Oh, I loved it!

I haven't read the book so had no pre-conceived ideas about what the characters should be like. I thought they were all brilliant, including Nicole Kidman.

It was so good.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 12/05/2017 17:59

I loved the book and I was so excited to watch the tv show. Loved that too! I liked how there were some differences but the main story was the same. I found the tv show ending excellent and better than the books ending.

I see that season 2 has been announced and I cannot wait!

EachandEveryone · 18/05/2017 17:50

You know we discussed Nicole Kidmans floaty hippy clothes in this and thought it was the character? Im just watching her on Ellen and shes much more fun than what we see her on our chat show. However! Shes wearing one of those floaty slashed frocks so maybe that is how she dresses in rl.

I'm so late to the party on this one, have wanted to watch it for ages, and just binged watched it on a flight!

3.5 hours there, 3.5 hours back, boom! Watched the final scenes on the beach as the plane was pulling into the gate. 😅

I was gripped from the off, and reading this thread was so surprised by how much everyone disliked Nicole Kidman, I thought she was incredible.

I read a spoiler some time ago, and was under the illusion that it all culminated in Perry killing Celeste - this was obviously completely wrong, but in a way it worked in my favour, as I couldn't figure out who the other murdered person was at trivia night, how the two story lines wove together, and it completely threw me off the scent of Perry as Jane's rapist. It was only Jane's horrified face that clued me in #slow

The therapist/Celeste story lines were so uncomfortable, but so compelling. It was almost like a hunter stalking a deer. One wrong move on the therapist's part, and Celeste would've fled.

Loved Reece - she is such a watchable actress (person?), no matter what part she plays. Madeline was fabulous and deeply annoying - very satisfying.

Ziggy was brilliant - you just knew that he was a nice boy. However, I found it really conflicting to feel sympathy for the Jane/Ziggy storyline over the Renata/Amabella storyline, given that Amabella clearly was being bullied. Renata's ostracising of an innocent child was cruel, even if you could understand her motives.

Loved Bonnie. Didn't realise her (RL) mother is Lisa Bonet from the Cosby Show. And her final move was such a cool twist. Loved her clocking what was going on, and moving in to help.

Going out to buy the book tomorrow.

franke · 24/07/2017 09:14

dowager snap! I binge watched the whole thing on a flight to Singapore. I don't think the theme song has left me for the last three weeks! I hadn't read anything about the storyline so everything came as a surprise - didn't expect any of the denouement. In fact I expected Emma Bella not to be bullied, but some how abused at home Confused - relieved I got that wrong. I watched the final episode again on the way back to pick up on details is missed. So, so powerful. The portrayal of Celeste and Perry's complex relationship was superb. Loved all the female characters especially Madeline and Jane. Can you tell I liked it? Smile

JessieMcJessie · 25/02/2018 15:22

I’ve only just watched this and it’s obviously a long time since anyone has posted but in the hope that it might pop up in someone’s “Threads I’m on”.....had Jane not been introduced to Perry in his capacity as Celeste’s husband before Audrey/Elvis night? I can imagine that he wasn’t the type to come along to casual dinners with friends and was always away working, so it’s perfectly believeable that she hadn’t. Or are we meant to think that she just hadn’t realised he was her rapist because she’d blocked out a lot of the memory and it was only seeing him become aggressive that gave her that clarity?

Parrothead · 25/02/2018 15:24

I’m not sure Jessie , but I think she hadn’t met him before. As you said be traveled a lot and wasn’t around much.

JessieMcJessie · 25/02/2018 15:27

Thanks Partothead! It was quite clever really because as a viewer I didn’t ever think of the possibility it could be Perry because we had seen so much of him that you just kind of imagined Jane had already met him too.

JessieMcJessie · 25/02/2018 15:28

Parrothead even!

iheartmichellemallon · 25/02/2018 15:32

They hadn't met - if you watch it back, even at school drop off, their paths didn't cross.

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/02/2018 17:29

Agree - they didn't meet - it wasn't like they did couple-y dinners or get-togethers, so the opportunity never arose.

Mrstumbletap · 25/02/2018 18:57

Yeah they didn't meet.

She has only just moved to town and Nicole did the drop offs mostly. They hadn't met until the costume party.

OhHolyJesus · 25/02/2018 18:59

Saw it on Now TV. Got a deal for two months subscription for the price of one. They are always doing deals. So worth it, it was brilliant and season two has M Streep in it! Xx

Bellini12 · 25/02/2018 20:48

There’s a season 2?!

I thought it was just based on a book with no sequel?

EachandEveryone · 25/02/2018 22:38

I dont know whether im please or not about that. Abit like the Handmaids Tale it feels like cashing in doesnt it?

OP posts:
JessieMcJessie · 26/02/2018 01:03

Thanks everyone for answering my question. I read that meryl Streep will play Perry’s mother in season 2. Maybe a bit cashing in but worth a try I think. I am also looking forward to more Handmaid’s tale too.
