Is this going to be our new Revenge/Desparate Housewives fix? www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/feb/17/big-little-lies-nicole-kidman-and-reese-witherspoon-shine-in-masterful-twist-on-desperate-housewives

Watched it. Joins old gang, just like before on the Revenge threads!! Grin

I think someone classically beautiful (as described in the book) and a bit younger would have been a better fit for Celeste. Perhaps Charlize Theron.
Amber Heard would have been amazing.

TheFacilitator · 19/03/2017 20:18

I've joined mumsnet especially to post my suggestion as to who I think should play Celeste as Nicole Kidman isn't doing it for me.

I think Elizabeth Debicki from The Night Manager would have been great.

QuinoaKeen · 20/03/2017 00:55

Welcome @TheFacilitator. I hope you stick around.
I had to Google Elizabeth Debicki but I agree she is more Celestial (Smile) than Nicole Kidman.

tumpymummy · 20/03/2017 01:09

We read BLL in my book group recently and have all said NK isn't right as Celeste. So glad you all agree! Yes, Elizabeth Debicki would have been a better choice. But loving Reece Wetherspoon as Madeleine. Not sure about her hubby, Ed yet, but her daughters are well cast too. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode.

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/03/2017 11:22

Still enjoying it, but I have a couple of niggles.

Why did the teacher on the kids first day do that thing where she made Renata's (?) kid point out who hit her in front of all the other kids and all the parents? Not very good practice.

Secondly, how does the school system in America work? Do they have private schools like over here? I can't imagine people who can afford those massive beachfront houses would send their kids to the local primary equivalent.

JeepersBeepers · 20/03/2017 12:43

They've mentioned several times that it's like having a free private education because the town is populated by well heeled folks.

LouiseBrooks · 20/03/2017 12:45

Debicki is striking yes, but Celeste is meant to be stunningly beautiful so I wouldn't see her in that part at all. .

When I was reading the book I thought of her as looking like Grace Kelly (but I can't think of a modern actress who looks anything like that.)

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/03/2017 13:29

They've mentioned several times that it's like having a free private education because the town is populated by well heeled folks

I obviously missed that several times, I do apologise.

welshmist · 20/03/2017 14:05

When I read the book Celeste I imagined as a Stepford Wife she was so buttoned up for reasons that became apparent, so the wooden aspect of the character does make sense, I have not seen any episodes yet so am looking forward to it. I have a beautiful neighbour who lived this kind of life outwardly everything was good, a manor house, two beautiful daughters, a lovely dog, a silly amount of money, the reality was truly awful as it turned out. She was robotic in her behaviour.

Delatron · 20/03/2017 14:10

Diane Kruger? She has that kind of ethereal beauty?

Oblomov17 · 20/03/2017 16:01

Sorry for being dim, but why does the fact they are all loaded, explain the fact that the teacher disgracefully dealt with the issue in front of all the parents?

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/03/2017 16:23

ob I think that was more in reply to why they haven't sent their kids to private school rather than why the teacher did the public confession thing.

farfarawayfromhome · 20/03/2017 17:10

I absolutely loved the book, the denouement took my breathe away!

I'm loving the tv series so far.

FYI a mumsnetters recommended this website to me to watch tv and it's a game changer. Pay a small subscription fee but has more than Netflix. I carry the iPad round and watch everything on it. Can't wait for the next episode!

farfarawayfromhome · 20/03/2017 17:13

Oh and yes I'm also loving The Good Fight!

Chottie · 20/03/2017 17:16

I don't have these channels either :( is it on YouTube?

LouiseBrooks · 20/03/2017 20:07

The Good Fight starts on More 4 I think on 30 March.

welshmist · 20/03/2017 20:18

I am looking forward to The Good Fight, no annoying political stuff in it I did get fed up with that in The Good Wife.

EachandEveryone · 20/03/2017 21:29

I havent read the book but would January Jones suited the part?

OP posts:
GreenGinger2 · 20/03/2017 22:07

Reece Witherspoon is fantastic in this, didn't realise how good she is. Why hasn't she been in anything else recently?

TheHiphopopotamus · 20/03/2017 22:22

I love January Jones, she would have been fab as Celeste.

Reese Witherspoon is ace. I think she got a bit of a reputation as being 'difficult' which is why she hasn't been in much lately. Didn't she get arrested for drink driving (or something) and had a bit of a 'don't you know who I am?' moment with the police? Confused

EachandEveryone · 21/03/2017 02:13

I wouldnt have recognised Derek from Stepbrothers!

OP posts:
March01 · 21/03/2017 06:46

I think the driving force for why the "strangling" was dealt with so badly was because it was noticed at going home time and Renata saw the red mark and demanded immediate action. I think we are to believe that she forced the teacher's hand into the group reveal.

I haven't read the book but I am really enjoying this. I watched episode 4 this morning and it just gets better and better. I am really enjoying the music too.

Having been a slightly similar situation to Celeste I am finding NK believable.
