Is this going to be our new Revenge/Desparate Housewives fix? www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/feb/17/big-little-lies-nicole-kidman-and-reese-witherspoon-shine-in-masterful-twist-on-desperate-housewives

Hmm on Googling it seems the rights are for the newest one. The Husband's Secret and What Alice Forgot are being made into films.

DispatchReady · 25/04/2017 08:44

Just watched - really great finale, I was getting really tense watching. It was a really good build up with Bonnie watching Celeste and Perry and the penny dropping for her that something wasn't right...and the look on Jane and then Madeleine's faces when realisation dawned...it was done so well! I think they should leave it there though, no more seasons! But would like other adaptations of her books.

papayasareyum · 25/04/2017 11:16

What a brilliant finale.
My overwhelming feeling at the end was utter relief that Perry was dead.
It was the only way for Celeste to be truly free of him.
If she'd left him, he'd have made her life a living hell, trying to get her back, trying to get custody of the boys, continuing to attack her. He also fits the profile of a man who, when finally abandoned by long suffering and abused wife, kills them all before killing himself.
Bonnie saved her from that.
I loved the ending.
I would've liked to know more about Madeleine and Ed and find out whether they stay together

Oblomov17 · 25/04/2017 11:47

Have watched last nights episode again. Enjoyed it just as much. It was very tense though, wasn't it, not exactly easy watching! I like that. I like how it ended and actually wouldn't want a 2nd series.

Howaboutthisone · 25/04/2017 11:51

I'd love them to do adaptations of the husbands secret and especially of what Alice forgot. Agree that a second series of this wouldn't really work as it was all tied up and it would feel like they were dragging it out.

FlipFlopFlappy · 25/04/2017 12:51

Just watched it. Brilliant! When he told her about the phone call my heart sank.

macnab · 25/04/2017 13:42

So glad I stuck with it, the finale was brilliant!

I was on the edge of my seat when Celeste & Perry were leaving for the party and she knew that he knew about the apartment Shock and the DV scenes last night were pretty hard to watch.

It all came together at the end, but I do feel it was a bit too rushed - was it the same in the book?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/04/2017 17:45

Really enjoyed / if can say that about a programme with dv :(

I was s but confysed when watching but thread confirmed it

So bonnie killed perry by pushing him

Not sure what the other woman were doing while all fighting

The flashing second clips made it hard to follow

So all woman are friends now

PlectrumElectrum · 25/04/2017 19:30

Loved this. I guessed the link between perry & ziggy earlier but avoided spoilers so it wasn't confirmed for the last episode.

I think my favourite in the whole thing was reese Witherspoon' character. She played it brilliantly, but Nicole Kidman was a v close 2nd favourite. Laura Dern was supremely annoying but perfect for the character.

I wish it was a longer series now!

MrsMopper · 25/04/2017 19:31

Loved it and the end.

picklemepopcorn · 25/04/2017 19:37

Made me cry. That man was so big, when he was weaving down the red carpet he was taller than everyone. Three women unable to stop him beating her. Those poor boys...

PlectrumElectrum · 25/04/2017 19:42

He really was a 'right bad bastard' wasn't he? He would have killed her eventually I think. Scary when he lost it & just oozed hate when angry.

IhatchedaSnorlax · 25/04/2017 19:54

It was a brilliantly acted series - all the women were fantastic. I was one who doubted NK in the first episode (based on reading the book) but by the end, I thought she was perfect.

It was horrendous that 3 grown women couldn't stop him - thank goodness for Bonnie.

In the book the ending is explained more - as others have said, Bonnie watched her dad beat her mum & was filled with rage when she pushed Perry (although it was over a balcony because he was sitting on too high a stool) & I don't believe the attack was so bad in the first instance.

Also Celeste set up a trust fund for Ziggy (or something along those lines to ensure he was financially secure). The police also kept digging to get to the truth.

I think it ended perfectly but also would love a 2nd series as I loved the strong female cast, beautiful scenery & gorgeous houses!

Lianne Moriarty said on Facebook that rumours of a 2nd series are just that - nothing has been confirmed & she's not sure if she should write one & was asking for people's opinions.

I agree with pp about her other books - they're all great & would make excellent series for TV (or film).

PlectrumElectrum · 25/04/2017 21:07

Yup, just some continual driving scenes along the coast to visit the amazing houses would do me. I'm sure I'd tire of it eventually but it would take a while Grin

Honeyandfizz · 25/04/2017 21:15

I too thought it was brilliant. The music, the kids, the story, the setting just so well put together.

Howaboutthisone · 25/04/2017 21:43

I preferred the way they handled the daughter trying to sell her virginity on the tv series to the book. Doesn't she go ahead and try to sell in the book but Celeste buys it under a fake name?

IhatchedaSnorlax · 25/04/2017 22:10

I think you're right Howabout & I preferred the TV conclusion too.

hudyerwheesht · 27/04/2017 16:23

I read the book a while ago but I don't remember anything about Madeleine having an affair or the whole puppet show storyline, did that happen?

Also, I could have sworn it was Jane who pushed Perry to his death (off a balcony, as it was in the book) and I thought that was something else that was changed in the series until I started reading this thread.

One thing I didn't think worked as well in the series was Perry using a different name; in the book he uses his cousin's name so when Madeline Googles him and tells Celeste there's this whole storyline going for a bit about it possibly being Perry's cousin and how Celeste is going to prove it was him/confront Perry about him,etc - don't think it worked as well in the series in fact the false name wasn't even explained. I also think it made it so much more obvious that it was Perry.

I do think that it was much more of a whodunnit than the book which meant a lot of setting up of red herrings that meant plot lines that never happened in the book(Ed and Madelines ex constantly about to fight, Madelines affair, etc) but I guess that was necessary.

Also, didn't see Jane end up with nice not-gay barista, unlike the book, which I thought was a shame.

All that said, I loved it Grin

picklemepopcorn · 27/04/2017 18:59

Jane went to the dance with him...

It was discussed on women's hour today, if anyone is interested.

Howaboutthisone · 27/04/2017 21:30

She was starting a relationship with him at the end of the show I think.

Hatethegym · 28/04/2017 22:37

Can anyone tell me who Ed was looking at when singing the song? It was so dark and with everyone in costumes I couldn't work it out

Clawdy · 28/04/2017 23:13

He was singing it to Madeline, and looking for her in the crowd, but she got upset, realizing how much he loved her, and disappeared with the group of friends.

Missanneshirley · 28/04/2017 23:42

Just caught up on last episode - I thought it was so well done.
I googled as to why they introduced madelines affair and Reese w said it was basically to give her more to get her teeth into, playing a flawed character was better to her

Hatethegym · 29/04/2017 00:12

Thanks Clawdy. I did hink that but the camera kept panning to a woman with a white headband so I thought I was mistaken.

ChessieFL · 29/04/2017 03:38

Hate - the white headband woman was the wife/girlfriend of the theatre man that Madeleine had an affair with. Headband woman suspected the affair so kept watching Madeleine at the party.
