I dont think stone or reed found out til 2014. Sophie was ill so drilla went to reed who insisted she should go to hospital and probably threatened him with the police so Drilla killed him. The plan was that sophie would pretend to be alice, get treatment and return to drilla. She would lead the police to the dungeon in the woods and the butcher would get blamed. Job done. No one in germany even knew that there was a french girl called sophie missing. Lena was already dead so they would put her body in the shed to aid fake alices escape. The plan would have worked except that sophie gave her real name by mistake and then Baptiste got involved and it all became very complicated. Perhaps drilla told stone about sophie, that she had never been captured but was living with him as his partner. Sophie could have backed this up, after all stone knew nothing about the circumstances of sophie's disappearance and she is a grown woman now. Drilla could have spun a story about her father and how he was protecting her by keeping her hidden. Or perhaps he believes the girl is alice but that she wants to be with drilla, not her family. Again, she is a woman and can go where she wants. Stone wouldnt have been happy about it all but he had shot a civilian in Iraq and caused the death of a child and drilla was threatening him with exposure. In 2014 Stone's health is deteriorating and his retirement is close. He helps to keep the police off the case and allows the bucher to be framed. Maybe when sophie asked him how he could live with himself she was referring to him allowing the butcher to get blamed.

deadringer · 24/11/2016 10:34

God that was long, sorry!

NotPennysBoat · 24/11/2016 10:35

I think the Iraqi girl has to have been taken and raised as Eve's 'sister'. Why write a sister into the story unless there's a reason for her to be there? And what else could have happened to the Iraqi girl? Would be a pretty good blackmailing reason for the Brig to keep quiet about Drilla's secrets too.

I also think the transgender prostitute thing would be enough to silence Reed, especially in the army.

Elendon · 24/11/2016 10:36

Stone started the fire, after he shot the father. Reed had nothing to do with it.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 24/11/2016 10:39

Nowombattheinn - thanks. Do we know whose idea it was / who actually started it?

Nowombattheinn · 24/11/2016 10:39

Oh yes Elendon you're right it was Stone who was throwing petrol everywhere and started the fire but Reed was there - did he try and stop him or protest? He obviously felt guilty. So much happened in that episode!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 24/11/2016 10:40

Thanks, Elendon

TimeIhadaNameChange · 24/11/2016 10:45

That's great. So Reed was implicated in the cover-up but not actually in the murder of the girl. So he's still, basicaly, a good guy. His son won't know this, though, and may have thought him responsible for the fire and the murder, hence being sickened by his actions.

(Not that I'm saying that Reed didn't do anything wrong, but compared to the others I'm counting him as a good guy.

NotPennysBoat · 24/11/2016 10:46

Not only that let's be honest societies in general don't see too much of an issue with an adult male having sex with a thirteen year old girl - especially if she's from a unsettled home (father a drunk) and is rebellious. 'She looks/acts older'

Err, in what society is that? Shock

NotPennysBoat · 24/11/2016 10:48

Sorry that first para was a quote from a pp - not my opinion to be clear!!

Nowombattheinn · 24/11/2016 10:49

I agree Time that Reed seems a genuine guy who was caught up in a shit storm, and he had a conscience as he was sending money to the Iraqi brother. I'm not convinced it was suicide with him though, I think Drilla murdered him as he knew too much about the abducted/groomed girls.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 24/11/2016 10:55

I'm with you there, Nowombattheinn. I reckon Drilla thought he had enough to keep Reed quiet and could blackmail him re Iraq, which is why he dared go to him in the first place, but, being the type of guy Reed is it didn't work. Reed was the least bad guy out there, and even if Gerrick could persuade the Brig to pin the murder on him Reed would have fought his case / taken it the punishment.

ktel1 · 24/11/2016 10:56

I think that Stone was well aware of what Drilla was up to in Iraq with the young girl. He may have had some involvement in it.

He was the one that pushed Reid into rescuing Drilla , was sure he was in the house and was responsible for everything that happened there- killing the father, the fire ,killing the young girl.

I also think that the other Iraqi girl is Eve's sister.

Two comments he has made stand out. The comment about the beautiful girl with the alabaster skin and what he said to Sam when he found the scans. I think they relate to Eve's sister.

One of many key questions- what happened to Eve's mother?

LilMissVixen · 24/11/2016 11:04

Don't think the Iraqi girl will be Eve, Reed says "13's not much older than Eve".

Could be her sister. But wouldn't it be quite difficult to pull off suddenly having a 13 year old daughter? Especially in the army, where they must have records of family members etc. Not least for housing!

THE MISSING IS BACK - PART 3
Nowombattheinn · 24/11/2016 11:09

Yes how would they explain her turning up at 13 years old? Did Stone adopt her and bring her home? I don't think we've had any clue where Eve's Mother is.

Also, does Lucy even exist on paper, her birth can't have been registered anywhere can it? Would she have needed a passport or any sort of paperwork to travel to Switzerland (that's where the log cabin is isn't it?) from Germany?

BitOutOfPractice · 24/11/2016 11:10

And how did Reed's son find out about his father's past? When baptistr found him in Iraq, Reed's son said that when he found out what his father was, it made him sick to his stomach. Who talked to him about his father?

BitOutOfPractice · 24/11/2016 11:14

Now it's easy to cross land borders in a car in the eu without being stopped for passports. Not sure about Switzerland

TimeIhadaNameChange · 24/11/2016 11:14

Switzerland is part of the Schengen zone, so probably wouldn't need passports.

Had another thought that he may not be tracked by his credit card if he used Euros in the toy shop. Ok, would be more costly but would he have taken the risk?

NotPennysBoat · 24/11/2016 11:19

Bitoutofpractice I think Daniel Reed looked through his father's accounts and saw the payments to GaryfromOnlyFoolsandHorses. He tracked him down in Iraq and was told the story (far-fetched I know!).

TheSpottedZebra · 24/11/2016 11:20

Maybe someone (Drilla) told Reid's son that Reid was a child abuser (even though he wasn't), and it was his son who killed him? Hence fleeing to Iraq in the present day.

So Reid helped the hidden girls, then Drilla arranged for him to be killed.

ceeveebee · 24/11/2016 11:24

Do we know how old Eve's sister is supposed to be? Odd that Reed says "not much older than Eve" - you would think he'd say "your daughters" if Stone had two children, why only mention one?

ThisPasadenaHomemaker · 24/11/2016 11:26

Good episode and I'm loving this thread.

My main problem with this show is the fact that the actress playing Sophie (Abigail Hardingham) and the actress playing the real Alice (Chelsea Edge) look absolutely nothing alike. Not even a vague resemblance. Added to that the fact that Abigail has such incredibly unusual and distinctive features (huge eyes, large protruding top lip) and I just can't believe that Sam and Gemma even considered for one second that she was their daughter.

My DD is 8. I'm pretty damn certain I'd be able to remember her clearly enough to know when someone who looked nothing like her was pretending to be her.

Sorry to be a debbie downer but it's been annoying me since we first saw the rollercoaster photo.

On a different note, does anyone else really hate Sam and Eve for their affair and her pregnancy? I'm surprised at the strength of my negative feelings towards them. I feel so sad for Gemma that I've been in tears at times Blush. I think Keeley Hawes' buttoned down/woman on the verge performance is fantastic.

Nowombattheinn · 24/11/2016 11:27

Thanks Time and Bit

If Daniel Reed found out his Father was sending money to that Iraqi brother, perhaps Daniel Reed questioned him as to why and Iraqi brother told him about the shooting dead Father and fire story that happened in 1991?

LilMissVixen · 24/11/2016 11:43

MintChocChips
If the Brig fathered Alice's baby (Lucy), what relation would it make her to Sam and Eve's baby?

That's really hurting my mind trying to work out what relation they all would be to each other! Really hope that's not the case because my head might explode! Grin

ceeveebee I thought that when watching, but that was when I thought Eve & her sister were twins, but I don't think (could be wrong?) that's been confirmed on the show. I think that was speculation on this thread.

We don't know Eve or her sister's exact age, but if they were, say, 12 & 15 respectively in 1991 Reed might only mention Eve because she's the closest to Iraqi girl's age. Plus he's trying to pull on Stone's heartstrings a bit, so would maybe use his youngest daughter as the example. I'm guessing though.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/11/2016 11:47

You're right about how Reed Jr could've found out

pasadena I 100% agree on both of your points. In fact we have been discussing this a lot, the issue of people believing that Sophie was Alice because they look so alike. And Alice wasn't exactly a baby when she disappeared was she? I'm sure people would notice it wasn't her. Especially her parents.

Also I loathe Sam. When he said the pregnancy was an accident last night I wanted to smack him. And he's totally gas lighting Gemma. Vile!
