In the last episode, when Sophie was trying to persuade Drilla to flee did she talk about starting again somewhere else "just the three of us"? Or have I imagined that in retrospect?

If so, it has new significance now. What did she intend for Alice?

KittyRainbow · 23/11/2016 23:37

I think that Stone and Reid know about Sophie but have no idea that she's Sophie.

So DK introduces her as his pregnant 'girlfriend' presuming she had Lucy when she was around 16, so they know he's got a too young girlfriend, but not that she's an abducted child. Maybe Reid delivers Lucy.

DK makes them keep quiet about it by blackmailing them with the death if the iraqi child/transgender prostitute etc

Perhaps Reid then discovers the truth when she gets Appendicitis. And is murdered.

Sophie knows they killed a child in Iraq (but not why) hence comments to Stone. Stone knows she's not Alice but doesn't realise she's Sophie until she returns and with Reid being murdered by DK and knowing that no one will believe he didn't know about the abductions agrees to keep quiet and help frame the butcher to get back at Nadia.

The end.

Oatsinajar · 23/11/2016 23:39

What an episode!

I guessed right last week that real Alice was in the basement.

I also think the child is Alice's, not Sophie's. Alice's mum found it hard to believe that her daughter was compliant, as she was by nature, quite fiesty.

I have a feeling Sophie is going to kill Driller before baptise and co get to him. I just hope Alice and the little child remain alive - her mum deserves some happiness. It'd be really cruel to kill her off after all that.

AnnieNoMouse · 23/11/2016 23:40

These are my thoughts and questions.
Well done everyone who guessed Alice wads in the boot!

Lucy could be Alice's baby. The video of Sophie shortly before her abduction made her look pregnant - that could be the pregnancy that was spotted when she returned as Alice. We still don't know what went on between Julien and Sophie's dad.

Why did Sophie return as Alice? Maybe because they were held in Germany near site of Alice's abduction, the return of Sophie nearby would have established a clear link between the 2 abductions, and that might have yielded more clues (e.g. looking at who was in Germany and France at the relevant times for the 2 abductions) .so it was better that everyone thought she was Alice. Also, disposing of Lena and giving closure to the Websters would have been bonuses in Gettrick's mind.

But then why did Sophie say her name in ambulance? That was a definite mistake from Gettrick's point of view, I bet he was very angry about that.

When did Stone and Reed find out about the abductions? I think that was in 2014, not before. Sophie, or one of the others, got ill and Gettrick decide to enlist his help, blackmailing him with what happened in Iraq and his knowledge about Reed's visits to prostitutes. Then G decided to kill Reed, because he couldn't rely on Reed's silence.
Gettrick also needed Stone's help to mess with evidence and to keep the German civilian police off the case.
Gettrick was taking a risk with telling Stone and Reed but probably felt he had no choice, Stone had been the one who set fire to the house, and Reed was implicated by association. Both had careers they would not want to lose.

Why was Aldi shacked up with a butcher in the town she had previously been stationed? I'm sure in an earlier episode she said she met him online, but it must have been deliberate on her part to seek out a partner in Eckhaiusen. Otherwise its a massive coincidence. Or did I misunderstand, and she met butcher while she was stationed there?

Oatsinajar · 23/11/2016 23:41

I think Sophie wants Alice out of that way, as she wants to pretend the little girl is hers.

Manumission · 23/11/2016 23:43

Okay, have just watched the first 10 minutes again.

Stone took Reed straight to the correct house saying that Adam had shown it to him when they were on patrol as the home of "the girl he was seeing".

The father of the girl revealed her age to them on the doorstep.

When Reed and Stone then discussed this in the car, Reed was really shocked at the news of her age. Stone said he hadn't known her age, but was almost more focused on the possibility that Adam had been taken in revenge.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 23/11/2016 23:43

Brilliant episode. Best drama I've watched for ages. I can't wait until next week. I bet Henry delivered Lucy and that's why he was killed.

shinynewusername · 23/11/2016 23:47

Why did Sophie return as Alice?

That is a really excellent question. Why did she return as anyone in particular and not just give a false name and pretend to be a French tourist who'd lost her passport?

Returning as Alice has to have been planned before the appendicitis - they wouldn't have had time to cook up the whole thing after Sophie became ill - so what purpose did it serve? There was an obvious risk of being rumbled and it seems an overly complicated way of disposing of Lena's body.

Oatsinajar · 23/11/2016 23:58

Why did Sophie return as Alice?

Maybe Reed told his girlfriend about Alice (but he didnt know about Sophie), and that's why Sophie had to pretend to be Alice and die, so it'd put an end to that story. Or maybe Briggs didn't know about Sophie either, and thought Sophie was really Alice. Once Alice died in the fire, then Briggs would be off Driller's back?

Bolognaise · 24/11/2016 00:23

I suspect she returned as Alice as she escaped but he got to her before she could be Sophie and decided she needed to play at being Alice to stop him being found out and put people off looking for either girl

Bolognaise · 24/11/2016 00:25

Or maybe she didn't escape maybe she fell ill while going about her business somewhat trusted rather than released or escaping and they cooked it all up together to hide her "Sophie" slip up

Oatsinajar · 24/11/2016 00:25

Maybe Sophie had always planned to return back as Alice as she realised she only had a dad to return to (who may have abhsed her)

Bolognaise · 24/11/2016 00:28

I need to go to bed!!! This is so addictive

But at one point the girls were trusted for days out and they didn't try to escape. 3 girls on a roller coaster and they didn't think to slip a note, leave a mark, leave clues for anyone "when she used to behave" maybe there was a time they were all pretty compliant and allowed some normality

shinynewusername · 24/11/2016 00:28

But surely Drilla must have colluded in her "escape" or how did she end up in the middle of a forest? She was so sick, she couldn't have made her own way out there. He must have taken her there and also planted the receipt to frame the butcher in the bunker where she had supposedly been kept.

Bolognaise · 24/11/2016 00:31

I wonder what baptise thought about Sophie's dad, maybe there was evidence of her being in a relationship with an older man, do drilla and Sophie's dad look alike at all?? I can't remember Sophie's dad, what did he used to be or do too? That was relevant wasn't it? That he could only get a job in the warehouse after baptiste accused him of being involved. Could he have known Drilla?

Bolognaise · 24/11/2016 00:34

My appendicitis came on pretty suddenly IIRC... Did we see her walk the woods sick or did she just say that?

shinynewusername · 24/11/2016 00:48

We saw her walking through the woods in 2014 at the start of episode 1. It was interspersed with shots of the younger Alice walking through woods just before her abduction.

Im0gen · 24/11/2016 01:02

I think Sophie has a baby who died during labour or soon after. . So when Alice was pregnant, drilla couldn't risk her delivering without medical help so he enlisted Reed. But I can't work out why reed stayed quiet for years , then suddenly became a threat so drilla had to kill him.

Maybe drilla asked reed to help Sophie when she has appendicitis and reed said that she needed surgery and he couldn't do it and said she had go to hospital .

S1lentAllTheseYears · 24/11/2016 01:49

I think Sophie pretended to be Alice so she could get her appendicitis fixed at the army hospital and then return to drilla. If she'd been reunited with her own father, she'd have been taken back to France which would have made it much more difficult.

Drilla dropped her off in the woods so she wouldn't be traced back to his house. Lena had died/been killed so they came up with the shed plan in order for Sophie to be able to go back to drilla and not be missed/searched for.

ewanthedreamsheep · 24/11/2016 05:48

Some significant event happened after the rollercoaster. You don't go from having "happy" days out, to being locked in a basement in rags, without something serious triggering it. I still believe Sophie's baby died and that is what triggered the change. Sophie became jealous of Alice for still having Lucy. She began to manipulate Driller, so that she was seen as being good and Alice as trouble who needed locking away in the basement.
Obviously Sophie is still a victim in all this, but the death of her baby changed her profoundly and she will do whatever it takes to keep Lucy, who she has "stolen" from Alice.
