"I think Sophie pretended to be Alice so she could get her appendicitis fixed at the army hospital"

Two snags with this:

a) no way of planning that a girl in that condition would be found conscious (and indeed she wasn't) and an unknown casualty would be picked up by German paramedics (as she was) until identity established.

b) there are no British military hospitals in Germany any more (they were all closed down about 10 years ago) and all that left are medical reception stations (which are essentially little wards on back of medical centres used mainly for single soldiers with minor conditions who do not have anyone else to nurse them or whose accommodation is unsuitable during illness/convalescence)

And Baptiste of course went to the reception desk of a German hospital when he first attempted to visit 'Alice'

There's far too much to be covered in the last episode, unless it's going to go at a heck of a pace.

We need to know why and how Reid died, how that fitted the timing of the reappearance of 'Alice', what the original plan was, and how it changed when Sophie said her real name in the ambulance.

Also how far the brigadier was involved - the turtle story and the edge in his voice when he called a different girl 'Alice' indicate he must be, but we don't really know extent.

Why was Lena taken?

Why were the three of them trusted to be on the roller coaster? (though of course we have only Sophie's word about the circumstances of that visit). I did wonder if Lena was taken to be a replacement Alice if original Alice died some years ago, but that doesn't work as the three of them were in public together.

If he wanted more than two, why three? Or many?

Any other casualties? And will there be justice for the lovely policeman?

BitOutOfPractice · 24/11/2016 06:40

So who is the body in the shed? And how was she identified as having Sam's DNA?

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 24/11/2016 06:47

We don't know about what happened about the DNA test.

I posted a lot about how it would be an extensive plot to subvert an actual test (especially as it was within days of the reappearance over which German police had priority, and they were still much involved at that point). So a good answer to that one would be satisfying.

(Or it's 'Alice' in the boot).

Bolognaise · 24/11/2016 06:48

I suspect the body in the shed is faked dna where drilla altered the results

I half expected Sam to start grave digging!

youarenotkiddingme · 24/11/2016 06:56

Sarah I noticed she said that too and couldn't work out I'd I'd missed something or it was a clue she knew something.

lastqueenofscotland · 24/11/2016 07:11

DNA was an inside job and a cover up by Driller killer
If he gets Sophie to return and Alice and kills her off then then everyone will think that she and Sophie are dead and will stop looking.
I'm not sure about the little girl being Alice's

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 24/11/2016 07:22

I wonder if maybe Gertrick was grooming Alice before she disappeared. The was apparently going off the rails and had that tattoo done as well.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 24/11/2016 07:34

Maybe Sophie being Alice and dieing was punishment to real Alice- firstly Sophie got what Alice wanted most, to see her family, and then when she 'died' Drillas could say "now your family think you're dead and won't look for you anymore". Cruelty.

Marmitelover55 · 24/11/2016 07:37

Does anyone else think there will be a fire in the Swiss hut next week? Don't know how I'm going to wait another week to find out what happens!

shinynewusername · 24/11/2016 07:40

I wonder if maybe Gertrick was grooming Alice before she disappeared

That's an interesting idea, because we don't actually know that Alice was abducted: all we saw was her walking down the road, then the camper van speeding off. But what if it was pre-arranged - she bunked off school to meet Drilla?

Bolognaise · 24/11/2016 07:42

I definitely think the girls were groomed by him

Fiderer · 24/11/2016 07:43

When Eve told Gemma about the DNA she said she'd had a call. Didn't say from whom. Can't have been Gettrick who called and lied as surely whoever ran the tests would have noticed the Army press release "Confirmed as Alice" and said, no, there was no match.

Suppose it depends what they took as DNA. I think it's Lena but that doesn't explain why her glasses were in the front of the van. Surely he'd have just chucked them in a bin.

After Sophie returned she and Lucy were in that upstairs bedroom, perhaps as a reward for having successfully pulled off the Alice impersonation.

Why didn't Baptiste and Gemma see the door all full of locks? Even if Gettrick got his drill out again (alas poor LovelyJorn), there'd be signs of them. Suppose with Lucy being so pliable he could have removed all the traces.

weareliverpool90 · 24/11/2016 07:58

I think Sam was also in Iraq and at the grave he had pieced together everything about gettrick and why he actually got beat up like he did.

MillieMoodle · 24/11/2016 08:20

Yes I agree. I think Sam realised at the grave that Baptiste may be right and so left the grave to go to his house.

0hCrepe · 24/11/2016 08:23

How come Lena's family haven't followed up Jorn'a phone call with the police? You would wouldn't you? And they'd say Jorn was asking questions about gettrick, what's happened? And they'd go oh yea he and his car have been missing for ages! And baptiste was working with him too and he's not tried to contact him. Surely more would come from a policeman going missing and a phone call to a missing girl's family??

IsItNotTimeThatIDid · 24/11/2016 08:28

I think that in Iraq they thought the girl was older, and both of them thought Drilla thought she was older too. So they freed him - they would keep quite because they were British soldiers who killed a man in peace time as well as burning a child to death. Not only that let's be honest societies in general don't see too much of an issue with an adult male having sex with a thirteen year old girl - especially if she's from a unsettled home (father a drunk) and is rebellious. 'She looks/acts older'

I wonder if Reed was only called upon when Sophie fell ill, Drilla may have got him involed as he had Iraq and the transsexual prostituture as leverage. Reed can't take that he freed Driila to allow him to do what he did (plus guilt of Iraq) and kills himself.

No explanation of Stone and the 'how can you live with yourself' comment and the turtle story. Stone seems a bit sinister to me

Reed and Aldi both think are innocent but disturbed.

Fiderer · 24/11/2016 08:31

I suppose if Lena's mum did call back she'd be told the officer she spoke to was off sick. The text said for a few days.

Wonder how long it'd be before a body was evidently decomposing in a car boot?

I rather liked the look of the younger Brig, he did a good impersonation of RA.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 24/11/2016 08:31

The room with the girls bed in wasn't the room with the locks on the door. Lucy was locked in the other room in the day, but maybe slept unlocked in there on her own?

I am annoyed at Baptiste for tipping off Drilla that he was onto him and allowing him to escape. That was a really stupid thing to do!!

Ruhrpott · 24/11/2016 08:32

Since Drilla had Alice he could have swooped the blood to hers for the DNA tests

Ruhrpott · 24/11/2016 08:32

Swopped not swooped!

Charley50 · 24/11/2016 08:39

Following on from what OhCrepe said, how come Drilla could just text a colleague of Jorn's as Jorn and just say 'oh can you cover me for a few days?' Yeah sure. And what sort of policeman goes round a suspected child killer abductors murderer's house, without telling a soul he is going there? I love the Missing but I hate how they string out the drama using massive procedural errors when the premise is the detectives are brilliant.

Charley50 · 24/11/2016 08:44

Yes Burn.. Why did Baptiste tip Drilla off? Couldn't they just have had Drilla moving as planned anyway? I know it's just to move the plot forward but it really annoys. Those poor girls could be free by now if Baptiste was the great detective we are told he is.

Dulra · 24/11/2016 08:53

Haven't time to read back so maybe repeating. I think it is too coincidental that reed dies just before Sophie's return. So I think Sophie was really ill with appendicitis gettrick panicking about knows reed is a medical and that he covered up for him with what happened in Iraq so approaches him to help Sophie but reed obviously appalled threatens to go to police so is obviously killed so they need to concoct sophie/ Alice charade to get Sophie medical help. I don't think Sophie is a bad one you can see how repulsed she is by get tricks touch she's playing along until she can rescue her lucy and possibly Alice

0hCrepe · 24/11/2016 09:02

If only baptiste had been nicer to Sophie when she came back as Alice. He might have gained her trust as someone not connected with the army. He's very impulsive.
I agree Sophie hates gettrick, and said how can you live with yourself to brig. Was the turtle story a way of telling her to escape and not look back? But how could she with the daughter?

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 24/11/2016 09:03

"Since Drilla had Alice he could have swooped the blood to hers for the DNA tests"

Unlikely, they were seeking a viable sample from a heavily burned body. Advanced techniques required. Also, as body does not appear to have been repatriated to UK at any time, the samples would have to have been taken by German medics, or someone specially flown out from UK (and if the latter, I doubt procedures would have been lax enough to permit interference and anyhow Reid was dead by then). I suppose Gettrick could have fiddled with the paperwork (though I can't see how) or just lied audaciously, but I don't see how it could have been done with the samples, which would have been taken by medics and sent straight to lab (probably with routine chain of evidence procedures).

Driller may well have been making a planned move, as he mentioned his pension point being in a fortnight.

But Baptiste has himself said he makes mistakes (the investigation of Sophie's father as a suspect, leading to mother's suicide). So are there any others?
