It's just not true that the accents are broad to appeal to American audiences. The series does appear to make an attempt to use authentic accents. They don't always succeed, but when they do, the result is not what most Americans who are not familiar with Scottish accents would think of it as a standard Scottish accent. For example, Jamie's accent is a Highland one with its characteristic lilt and Ned Gowan's is pure upper middle-class Edinburgh.

Diana Gabaldon had not been to Scotland when she wrote the first book but she has been there many times since.

Lessstressedhemum · 03/10/2017 17:32

Yes, she's been now, but her geography is mental. I don't know why Roger's accent is so broad, if not for a foreign audience, then, because it is much thicker than RR'S normal accent. my stupid acrylic nails are hampering, y typing, so excuse any random errors. Sam's accent is very good, Bill Patterson's is flawless, but a lot of the other ones are quite dodgy, mostly not comedy territory, but not terribly convincing Highland accents either.

As far as Roger goes, he would have definitely muted his accent, not thickened it, because highlanders were kind of looked down on ad being tumshies and it would have marked him out at Oxford, the same with the gaelic, that wasn't really for educated folk, either.

GreatWhites · 03/10/2017 18:05

I think a lot of the actors are Weegies and West coasters putting on Highland accents. The dialogue doesn't always help them either, admittedly. All those fashes, dinnas and verras Grin

The only person I know who came from the Highlands and went down south for uni had an English accent...

Lessstressedhemum · 03/10/2017 18:43

Yes,a lot of them are weegies or from around here. Even most of the highlanders at Edinburgh uni when I went there in the late 80s affected a pseudo English accent. Better than being a tumshie or a teuchter. I on the other hand spent four years being ridiculed and "misunderstood" because of, y Ayrshire accent. Much more dinnae/cannae than dinna.

SenecaFalls · 03/10/2017 19:58

Bill Paterson is a Weegie, but he does a perfect posh Edinburgh.

DryWhiteagainW · 03/10/2017 20:50

Less are US fans so odd? How could they not adore LJG? I just don't get the ridiculous small minded hyper fan Confused

watching ep4 for 3rd time just to make sureGrin

LonelyOversharer · 03/10/2017 20:59

I take it the super fans and DG herself it seems only love Jamie and SH. Everyone else is just getting in the way of Jamie meeting them and falling in love with the weird superfan, and thus are evil.

I am going to watch all 4 episodes in a binge tonight, as I've lots of work to do (and I can't resist it)!

AKAmyself · 03/10/2017 21:06

omg. I'm in tears. so incredibly powerful, the last scene with the bob dylan song broke my heart in a million little pieces!

SenecaFalls · 03/10/2017 21:14

are US fans so odd?

I hope not, being one myself and all.

AKAmyself · 03/10/2017 21:28

right. I have composed myself after the sobfest that was episode 4 (aka "the one when Geneva was all of us") some random thoughts in no particular order.

the Geneva thing was verra well done. Geneva herself was great, a convincing wee little bitch but also spirited and attractive, and you know what I much prefer thinking that Jamie had a good shag with a nice lady who probably smelled lovely rather than the whole rapey thing with a whiney aristocrat. And honestly who can blame her? I want to see one person here who didn't wish she'd given her maidenhead to Jamie Fraser Grin
Sex scene was amazing

Loved Isobel even though I thought the whole set up with the whole mega aristocratic family running around the stables and talking openly about adultery beggared belief. I think I would have preferred them to be a bit more authentically stiff.

LJG is a darling. The look on his face when he said "I shall probably want you till the day I die!". I feel cheated of the snog truth be told, I'd have quite liked to watch!

Agreed with whoever said SH's acting not as mind-blowing as in previous episodes. I think I've said before that he is a very physical actor (NOT THAT WAY YOU FILTHY MINDED LASSIES), and there is something about him being confined in fine clothes and plush interiors which just doesn't work (same problem as the whole French period). Having said that I ached for him at the humiliation of being in service, him laird Broch Tuarach and all that. And I adored the stinking papist scene.

He had to let his jaw and his ass do all the work and whoever did his hair this episode needs to have a good honest conversation with herself, it was not good!

Brianna - Mark me, they will come to regret casting SS in that role. She is terrible, zero impact, zero charisma, she is just eaten up whole by anyone she shares the screen with.

Roger - LOVE!

Claire - not much to say. She's a husk of a woman in her matronly beige knitwear.

The Bob Dylan song at the end played me.

Is it next sunday yet?

oops sorry, posted twice, not sure what happened!

DryWhiteagainW · 03/10/2017 21:42

You seem entirely normal Seneca Grin

AKAmy great summary. Excellent point about SH being a physical actor. I also think he is much better hen he's talking. Silent, sad Jamie isn't right.

I didn't mind SS.

And love the analysis of Scottish accents. No clue, English here, but I love a fash, verra etc, that made me laugh.

JuneFromBethesda · 03/10/2017 21:49

Right, I've caught up now.

Really enjoyed that episode but overriding thought was that that kid looks even less like SH than Brianna does. How lucky was it that he didn’t get Jamie’s red hair though, eh?

I completely agree with this - I didn't find it that emotional watching Jamie with Willie because the boy looked nothing like him. Could they not at least have dyed his hair or something!? Given that the whole reason for Jamie having to leave was that 'anyone with half an eye' could see that he was W's father, you'd think they'd have found a child who did look vaguely Heughan-ish.

I think the sex scene with Geneva should have been more awkward, and she should - at the crunch point - have been more nervous. She is in the book as I recall. And in the book he's a bit: right, better get it over with. They both seemed to be enjoying a bit too much. I thought. But maybe I'm just jealous Grin

I loved Lady Isobel, what a sweetheart. She and LJG make a nice couple Smile

Only one more episode before the great reunion ....!!!

JuneFromBethesda · 03/10/2017 21:51

Oh and welcome mateysmum. Always room for more Smile

SenecaFalls · 03/10/2017 22:03

You seem entirely normal Seneca Thanks. Comes from having been partly educated in the UK, no doubt. Smile

I agree that the actor playing Willie looked nothing like SH. I read something to the effect that they cast him because he was the best actor who auditioned for the role, rather than looks. But they would have been departing from the books to a large extent to make him a redhead. Much is made of the fact that he looks just like Jamie, except for his hair. If memory serves, it has plot reverberations in the later books. But I think the episode, as good as it was, would have been better had he looked more like Jamie.

As to SH's acting, I thought it was fine in the episode, especially the little nuanced looks at baby William. That's when my heart melted.

I loved the performance of Heather James as Geneva. I watched it a second time just for that. She's American, by the way.

snozzlemaid · 03/10/2017 22:25

I've just read that there's going to be a week with no new episode after the next one. So we have ep 5 next Monday then nothing for a week and then finally ep 6 (two weeks after 5) which I believe is the print shop.
Very cruel to make us wait an extra week. It's bad enough having to wait one week between episodes.

AKAmyself · 03/10/2017 22:26

I just re-watched the wedding episode, purely for research purposes you understand. I wanted to reassure myself that much as Jamie seemed to enjoy shagging Geneva, that was just it - a nice shag.

Lassies - I can safely say, it was nothing like making love to Claire although he still has such a fine ass.

Made me a little sad though that we lost the fun, lighthearted, impulsive young Jamie. The actors are doing such a fantastic job of ageing their characters through acting rather than cheesy makeup.

I can go to bed happy now.

LonelyOversharer · 03/10/2017 22:37

Hang on, so we get ep5, which I recon will end with Claire going "it's not Geordie" or whatever she says in the print shop, and then wait two weeks ... why! That's really not playing by the rules.

aka I watched 5,6 and 7 of season1 today in my 'start from scratch' fest. They SH are doing a great job of ageing, he looks so young and, um, ripe in the first few episodes. I think on balance I prefer him playing a bit older!

Lessstressedhemum · 03/10/2017 22:39

Seneca seems completely normalGrin but some of them are totally off their heads. They can't cope with even the smallest change from the books and they don't like John grey because he is gay and loves Jamie. I think they are so invested in Jamie and Claire that they can't countenance anything else.

One of the women on one of the groups that I am in claims to not have read anything non Outlander related for over ten years and this is apparently something to be admired.

I thought that the wee lad who played William was very cute, he also had the makings of very strong bones, you could imagine that he would look more like Jamie as he grew. The thing is, where are they going g to find another outrageous hottie who looks like Sam to play full grown William?

snozzlemaid · 03/10/2017 22:43

Aka I rewatched the sex with Geneva scene too for that reason. You're right, there was no chemistry and it was a purely physical act. Nothing like when he is with Claire.

DryWhiteagainW · 03/10/2017 22:56

Geneva actor is American Shock and she seemed so sane !!!Grin bloody good accent what!

A WEEK offShock that's totally out of order and mean.......

SenecaFalls · 03/10/2017 23:05

I have heard about some of the goings-on that people on some of the US-based online groups get up to so I only participate in this one on MN. Mind-boggling to contemplate not having read anything non-Outlander related for years. And I think that on the whole the series is better than the books.

AKAmyself · 04/10/2017 06:05

I go on Reddit from time to time though I don't participate. People seem v sane and funny
