Because we can't wait until next year for season 3. Highbrow discussion of Jamie's knees, hair and anything else Outlander

And I loved all his scenes with LJG 😍

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/10/2017 21:22

Had Diana Gabaldon ever been to the UK or even Scotland before she wrote Outlander? The names of some of the characters are a dead giveaway that she’s not British.

No British writer would’ve nicknamed a major character ‘Wee/Little Willie’ or ‘Brian/Brianna’. Or even ‘James Alexander MALCOLM McKenzie Fraser’.

SenecaFalls · 02/10/2017 21:33

Just an observation from a purely aesthetic point of view, you understand, but those close up shots of Jamie and Lord John . . .

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 02/10/2017 21:38

Book 1 (Outlander/Cross-stitch) was written as a "practice writing a novel by writing a novel" - DG had previously been writing tech stuff I seem to remember. So, yes there are mistakes, which she fully admits (and which drive me bonkers!). There's a companion book (called Outlandish I think) where she talks about how Outlander came about, which is moderately interesting.

TempusFuckit · 02/10/2017 21:57

And - breathe. Loved that one - montages are usually naff as fuck but that one had me sobbing. And I don't even like Dylan that much.

Love LJG, but he clearly shares a dialect coach with Tyrion Lannister.

And so glad they ditched the rapiness. Agreed that she seemed quite sweet once she was out of her comfort zone.

So will they do the creepy skull scene with Joe Abernathy next week do you think?

shittyshitybangbang · 02/10/2017 22:07

Love the Scene where Jamie is asking john to look after his son.Grin

DryWhiteagainW · 02/10/2017 22:13

Loved it.
Hate Bob Dylan.
Thought Willie would have more auburn hair....sweet though.
Never believed that Jamie would offer himself to LJG....

LJG, Tyrion Lannister and Gellis Duncan........but I don't even care about accents anymore, it's brilliant.

was SH wearing a wig again?

DryWhiteagainW · 02/10/2017 22:25

And meant to add........a new woman at work mentioned that she was watching "this show called Outlander" Shock Outlander and work have never crossed I said I loved it, she's on season 1, said it was "a bit slow"........I nearly punched her!

snozzlemaid · 02/10/2017 22:25

Loved it, loved it ,loved it.
I love the way LJG always almost has tears in his eyes whenever he looks at Jamie. You can see he adores him.
Story with Geneva was handled well. The scenes with Jamie and Willie were great and heartbreaking when he gave him the wooden snake he carved for him.
I don't like Claire much in the 60s. She needs to get back to Jamie.
I'm undecided about Brianna but I love Roger. RR is perfect for the part.
If the reunion isn't until ep 6 I'm trying to remember what else happens that will fill next week's episode?

snozzlemaid · 02/10/2017 22:27

Dry. That's sort of why I've not recommended it to anyone. I'd be gutted if they didn't like it.

DryWhiteagainW · 02/10/2017 22:38

Anyone know which stately homes they used for Hellwater and Geneva's husband's home ?

pixieg1rl · 02/10/2017 22:41

Ahh, lovely Roger with his chunky turtle necks, beard and bashful manner. So lovely.

I wonder if next week will spoiler show J & L or we’ll find out with Claire?

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/10/2017 22:44

I was wondering that pixie If they show it in detail, rather than have J telling Claire what happened, it might go some way to explaining why he did it.

TempusFuckit · 02/10/2017 22:46

Oh god, irl people's reactions. Everyone I've persuaded to watch it has politely told me "it's not really my thing", i.e. it's a bit shit but I don't want to be rude.

It's like musket shot through my heart!

Belindaboom · 02/10/2017 22:46

The closing song, music doesn't really get me anymore but it was beautiful (I know it's a cover, but their voices just worked)

TempusFuckit · 02/10/2017 22:49

I can't see them showing L&J in real time - there's no way they'd squander the shock value of M walking in on J&C at Lallybroch?

snozzlemaid · 02/10/2017 22:49

Aah yes we've got the J & L storyline to come. How could I have forgotten that?!

AngeloMysterioso · 02/10/2017 23:00

I'm more than a little bit in love with LJG. Such a pity he's in love with Jamie, no fun sex scenes with him to look forward to Sad

pixieg1rl · 02/10/2017 23:25

Didn’t Jamie give him a bit of a snog in the book? or is that my wishful thinking?

jollyjester · 02/10/2017 23:35

Jamie got his bum out! Grin

And lots of other lovely things! I'm really enjoying this season but I don't like 1960s Claire. I want her to go back.

Njordsgrrrl · 02/10/2017 23:53

Thank you for the timeline answers. I think I was confused because at the end of S2 she's saying "I can go back" knowing he's alive, and I sort of expected her to rush straight through (I would've)

From what she's got with her in the books she's a bit more organised and less impulsive than me Grin

SenecaFalls · 03/10/2017 01:52

Anyone know which stately homes they used for Hellwater and Geneva's husband's home ?

Gosford House was Helwater and Hopetoun House was Ellesmere's estate. Both are near Edinburgh.

gamerwidow · 03/10/2017 07:27

Pixiegrl yes Jamie did give him a snog in the book GrinI was wondering if they were going to be brave enough to show it all the way through that scene.

Lessstressedhemum · 03/10/2017 10:08

There's no way they were going to be brave enough to show that snog! They would lose so many of their American fans who hate John just because he is gay and then hate him more because he touched Jamie's hand.

DD and I were talking about roger's accent yesterday. It's like RR and other cast members have broadened their accents to try to make themselves sound more like how Americans imagine Scots sound. I find it hilarious when HH folk repeatedly ask if anyone knows what x person said because they can't understand even with subtitles onGrin

Sam's face when he left Willie broke my heart, yesterday. Now he has lost 3 children.

DG has never been to Scotland. Her Scottish geography is absolutely hilarious.

mateysmum · 03/10/2017 13:54

Is there room at Lallybroch for one more wee lassie?

I am watching S1 on freeview, so am a bit behind the curve TV wise, but though I thought some of S1 is a bit unconvincing, I liked the ideas enough to start on the books. Just finished DIA this morning and promptly downloaded Voyager. My domestic chores are being seriously neglected. At 900-1000 pages per book, it's a full time job!
