I have just cried my fucking eyes out several times. I didn't expect it to be this good. Maybe it's me not RTFT but the timeline is confusing me. I thought Claire was going back through the stones at the end of S#2 and now she's on a plane to Boston?

ToniMumsnet · 02/10/2017 11:21

I've just watched it and it really was something else. A bit of me really wishes I had waited until they were all out so I could have binge-watched the whole thing.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/10/2017 11:22

Really enjoyed that episode but overriding thought was that that kid looks even less like SH than Brianna does. How lucky was it that he didn’t get Jamie’s red hair though, eh? 🙄

Liked the Lady Isobel character and even Geneva grew on me. I cannot wait for J&C’s reunion though.

SeamusMacDubh · 02/10/2017 14:44

Just finished watching, OMG!!! It's such a good episode and feels so jam packed with things happening.

To the PP confused about the time line, end of series 2, Claire goes back through the stones to the "present" just before Jamie goes off to fight in the battle of Culloden. Now, we're ~20 years ahead, we're following Jamie and Claire's separate lives running parallel but 203 years apart.

FridgeCut · 02/10/2017 14:47

At the end of Series 2 when they first arrived back for the funeral I thought she was going to go through then, I am a bit confused why she didn't.

It was very good, I haven't read any of the books but enjoying it as it comes.

SenecaFalls · 02/10/2017 14:58

She went back through the stones to 1948 (or thereabouts) Scotland and then to Boston with Frank. Twenty years pass and then she takes Brianna to Scotland. It's 1968 when they are on the plane returning to Boston.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/10/2017 14:59

Can’t remember exactly but I think they saw Geilis go through the stones so realised that Claire might be able to go back. But they had to find out if Jamie was still alive after Culloden first otherwise there wouldn’t have been any point.

I’m probably wrong, I haven’t rewatched S2 but I’m sure someone will be along to correct me Grin

LonelyOversharer · 02/10/2017 16:24

Yy courtney you're quite right. You still need to rewatch s2 though I'm one of the only ones who likes s2 just, because! I have started from scratch, on s1ep5 just now (obviously I watched the new episode early doors, actually just on the second watch).

Geneva was very good. And that's just how I read the book, I hadn't ever considered it was rape. (But if you apply 2017's standards to it...) I loved it when he dropped her in the mud too. You just would, wouldn't you? Isobel is cast well, quiet plainer (but much nicer) sister. And it was lovely that she was 'in' on Jamie being the dad, in the book I'm not sure she knew, and felt sorry for her doesn't she conveniently kick the bucket?

Can we agree that Bree is very much nicer in the series? I really like the character. RR is just the sweetest thing.

SenecaFalls · 02/10/2017 16:48

Geneva looked just more than a little bit like Claire.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/10/2017 16:56

Yes to all this! I really like series Bree even with the dodgy accent which isn’t any dodgier than LJG, tbh. I thought he was English at first but it seemed like his accent slipped a couple times this episode? And I love RR ❤️

Also agree that Geneva looked very much like Claire.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/10/2017 17:06

And I think the reason why I’ve warmed to Bree is that I can’t hear Claire’s inner monologue telling is how amazing and fabulous B is Confused

JuneFromBethesda · 02/10/2017 17:07

A bit of me really wishes I had waited until they were all out so I could have binge-watched the whole thing.

I've had that thought too Toni but I know no-one in real life who watches it, and I need someone to talk to about it - so if I don't watch each episode as it comes out I can't join in here either!

SenecaFalls · 02/10/2017 17:22

Speaking of accents, I think that Roger's is a bit OTT. I know it's a version of the actor's own accent, but at the time, and based on his social and education level, I think he would have a more toned down accent. It's broader than Rev. Wakefield's for example, who raised him.

SenecaFalls · 02/10/2017 17:23

Bree's accent seems to have improved somewhat, but it certainly isn't anything close to a Boston accent.

ToniMumsnet · 02/10/2017 19:08

Am I the only one who can clearly see that it's not Boston, but permanently a wet autumn day in Glasgow.
Does Boston even have anything like the Glasgow tenements? But this is me being far too picky.

I also have no friends who watch this (or read it) . So I am so glad I have found you all.

GreatWhites · 02/10/2017 19:24

but permanently a wet autumn day in Glasgow.
'Boston' actually resembles a wet autumn, winter, spring AND summer day in Glasgow Wink

I think that Roger's is a bit OTT
I agree. I think all of the Scottish cast do at times, although I'm never sure if it's because I genuinely don't watch many Scottish things so I'm not used to hearing the accent on TV.

Liked the puddle Grin Jamie was gorgeous as a groom. May take up horse riding.

ToniMumsnet · 02/10/2017 19:36

I've spent a lot of time in Glasgow, but not Boston.

I don't find the accents too bad, but I spend a lot of time in Scotland.

The puddle was an excellent touch.
I'm really interested to see how the adult Fergus looks.

RaininSummer · 02/10/2017 20:13

That was a fabulous episode. Geneva looks a lot like Claire I agree and I thought she seemed quite sweet once they were in the bedroom despite the fact that she issued dire threats to get him there.

John Grey was really lovely.

I always come in from work monday and watch it immediately. Going to watch the whole lot again once complete. Am thrilled that I have got my mum and daughter into it now.

Waytoogo · 02/10/2017 20:22

I'm going against the grain, I didn't like episode 4 as much as the earlier 3. I thought SH was very wooden in a lot of the scenes - just sticking your ever so nice square jaw out is not acting! When Geneva propositioned him he didn't look more than mildly surprised, he was much more expressive in S1 when Claire suggested sharing a room! Again in the bed scene, riding away at the end. Not sure why as he's a superb actor and reduced me to a soggy mess in episode 2.

I thought Geneva looked a lot like Claire and that Isabella was excellently cast. CB's acting - so yearning and brittle but resigned- was amazing.

Can't wait for next week, hope the reunion lives up to expectation and that SH gets his jaw under control!

ToniMumsnet · 02/10/2017 20:35

I know what you mean about SH's jaw. Even I noticed that in this last episode.

LonelyOversharer · 02/10/2017 20:42

I might have watched them all far far too many times, but SH sometimes sounds Welsh to me!

Was he doing "tight lipped servant"? His hair was way too scruffy too. Perhaps to contrast Geneva's rich spoilt upper class. I guess it's hard not to make SH look good.

Claire was looking almost too scared to actually find Jamie, so cleverly done. Can't wait for her to ditch that awful hair-do and get some curls.

GreatWhites · 02/10/2017 20:44

Claire's hair must have been superglued together Confused

alfagirl73 · 02/10/2017 20:45

I'm loving season 3... but can't wait for Claire and Jamie to be reunited!

Glad it's not just me who looked at the 'Boston' location and immediately thought "that's not Boston, that's Glasgow!"... but then I suppose if George Square can get passed off for Philadelphia in World War Z, Outlander can get away with passing off Glasgow as Boston! LOL!

susurration · 02/10/2017 20:50

I really thought this was a beautiful episode. When J realises he has a son, the little look on his face was lovely, and the very end when he has to just style it out. So heartbreaking!

I'm a bigger J fan than I am a C fan, so i'm not too bothered about her scenes but I really like RR's Roger. I think the only way C will improve is once she is back with J, but her stupidity and pig-headedness always has annoyed me. She is best when she is listening IMO.

SeveredPixieBits · 02/10/2017 21:09

Omg, that was good! My favourite so far. I was a mess as he rode away from Willie.
