Because we can't wait until next year for season 3. Highbrow discussion of Jamie's knees, hair and anything else Outlander

I'll bookmark Black Sails for the next bout of droughtlander!

JuneFromBethesda · 30/09/2017 14:31

I agree 100% with your last (long) post AKA. I would add to that I think it's the only time I've seen sex scenes written from the female perspective, or at any rate an equal male/female perspective. That's true to DG's idea of subverting the tired idea of 'masterful man educates young female virgin'. They have so much earth-shattering sex in the books it makes me feel frankly a bit inadequate Grin but I do love the fact that it's about J pleasing C, every bit as much (if not more) as it is about her pleasing him.

Totally agree with your last post about Claire and Frank's marriage gamerwidow. I think Frank gets a hard time on this thread!

Welcome to the Lassies Toni Grin

And I will look out for Black Sails, thanks for the tip. I only stumbled onto Outlander when I was desperate for something to fill the Poldark gap - it will be nice to have something else to watch!

breadwidow · 30/09/2017 18:13

June, me too! Black sails sounds great too. And Aka I get what you mean without having read the books - I got hooked on the TV show this summer and bought the first outlander book to take on holiday and it was just a bit too romancey. Maybe I need to give it a chance, and it may be because I prefer clean paired down writing styles, but overall it felt less high quality than the books.

gamerwidow · 30/09/2017 18:29

The first book is arguably the worse DG has definitely improved as a writer over the years. If I hadn't seen the show I wouldn't have bothered reading the other 7 books but she hits her stride around about book 3 imo.

ToniMumsnet · 30/09/2017 19:45

Yes, I'd watched the 1st two seasons before I started reading the books. Currently working my way through Book 5. But I'm really tempted by the LJG books.

I should give Black Sails a go as it has Toby Stephens in it and I loved his Mr Rochester.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/09/2017 20:01

Toby Stephens Rochester was the best! Never imagined him with ginger hair but he totally won me over.

Gingers FTW Wink

breadwidow · 30/09/2017 20:30

Oh I luuuuurve Toby Stephens as Rochester, black sails sounds like a very good prospect

ToniMumsnet · 30/09/2017 20:42

Perhaps we need to start a box set club. Like a book club except we are watching box sets instead. Black Sails seems a good place to start.

LonelyOversharer · 30/09/2017 20:48

Oh it is. I have watched all 4 seasons twice ! The bloke who plays Billy Bones is also very tasty, but it's a great watch. Toby Stephens is brilliant in it all time crush

Tis nearly monday...

ToniMumsnet · 30/09/2017 20:55

Oh I know, I can't wait to get the kids to school on Monday and watch it.
Do you think we'll have to wait another week before they meet again.

AKAmyself · 01/10/2017 07:33

I adored Toby Stephens as Rochester and in general loved that adaptation (much better than the limp, pallid affair that was he Fassbender/wasikowska movie).

I don't have amazon prime where I live so will have to wait til it comes onto Netflix (and watching Outlander on iTunes where it only gets released on Tuesdays). I am becoming very good at waiting :)

Middleoftheroad · 01/10/2017 11:22

Just seen episode 4. Will keep quiet until others have.

Episode 5 trailer too.... 😁

JuneFromBethesda · 01/10/2017 11:51

Sorry Toni I think it's Episode 6 when they're reunited ...

I finished Voyager last night and to my surprise I found myself thinking that I really need the next book asap. Although I have enjoyed the books, they haven't always held my attention (I skim-read chunks of DIA and some of the Caribbean bits in Voyager) and I only really got Voyager so I could read the bit where they get back together Grin But somehow she's got me hooked and I have Drums in Autumn ordered - now I can find out why you all hate Brianna so much!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/10/2017 11:56

Drums of Autumn was my favourite one. Couldn’t get past the first few chapters of The Fiery Cross though (and believe me, I tried Confused) and eventually gave up.

shittyshitybangbang · 01/10/2017 13:04

what was the old man was talking about when he said the gold is cursed and how does he know about the white witch?

gamerwidow · 01/10/2017 13:26

It's revealed later. I know this is a spoiler thread but something's are better revealed as they are supposed to be.

AKAmyself · 01/10/2017 13:36

I think DoA is the best of the series

AKAmyself · 01/10/2017 14:05

middleoftheroad keep quiet about the content but HOW WAS IT?! and how come you'e already watched it?

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/10/2017 16:14

Episode 4 is on Kodi, if anyone watches it that way.

AKAmyself · 01/10/2017 16:57

Mmmhhh wondering what Kodi is and whether it's available in my country....

DryWhiteagainW · 01/10/2017 19:56

Very interesting all

I have to admit I loved Poldark ever since watching the first to adaptation as a girl, even w anted to call my DS Ross!!!!i didn't but Outlander has ruined it for me now, no chemistry between R and D compared to J and C and it's so pantomime like Sad. Although I love Aidan T and can't wait for the next series .

Ive watched all of Black Sails and enjoyed it a lot. Some of the characters the main female lead is crass but it's pretty good. Toby S is excellent and the tall ships cgi is fab.

Oh, and whatever you say about the books, I love them despite the twaddle.

breadwidow · 01/10/2017 20:17

Terrible typo in my post from 6pm ish yesterday - I mean the book seemed less high quality than the TV show.

What is kodi? Have to wait til tomorrow for amazon prime

LonelyOversharer · 02/10/2017 10:25

Right, that's the first one since Faith that's made me cry.

That is the best episode yet I think. How well done was it? I'm so glad I work at home on mondays.

Lessstressedhemum · 02/10/2017 10:34

Crying again.

gamerwidow · 02/10/2017 11:01

Beautifully done they even made Geneva more than just a spoilt madam.
Jamie's face at the end blub :(
