I'm not familiar with the story, but the trailers for it look awesome.

I can't see anything with both Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in, as well as Olivia Colman being bad, can you?

But I guessed the drivers of the trucks knew what was coming and scarpered?

GypsyFl0ss · 28/03/2016 11:19

Frisky with the very short hair was the one that got shot. The one walking to the van was the big bear of a bloke who got called down to collect the non existent parcel.

Panic me too. The Canada thing threw me slightly though!

recyclingbag · 28/03/2016 11:26

Oh OK, that makes a lot more sense about the papers.

PanyMcPanface · 28/03/2016 11:31

They are not "henchmen". They are "support operatives".

lorelei9here · 28/03/2016 11:39

Pany - are you Roper? Grin

bakeoffcake · 28/03/2016 12:01

Can I ask about the people who got into the van? I presumed they were the people he owed £300m to?

Why would his own "support operatives" have gotten into the van?

CoffeeAndOranges · 28/03/2016 12:06

Just caught up with this- highly watchable, a bit daft in places.

Loved Hugh Laurie, didn't think he'd be all that good at being bad but he was so sinister by the end he gave me the creeps. Brilliant acting. Agree that Hiddles struggled with showing a range of expressions, or maybe that was just him holding his cover and never being able to relax.

And where did Jed's awful cuts and bruises go at the end? She took quite a beating but by the end there was no trace of it, or did I miss it? Thought she was so glam but again, only a few expressions.

I think it's been left wide open for another series, possibly with the arms dealer guys pursuing Hiddles for the money - where did it go?

MissBattleaxe · 28/03/2016 12:17

I don't want a second series. I liked how this one was all wrapped up. All the second one would do would be to string it out again. It would be cat and mouse and the only satisfactory ending would be Roper getting his come uppance again. Leave it as a stand alone.

I think Tree keeps the money and I like to think he and Jed stay together and everything is lovely. Roper probably gets beaten to death or something. Oh well.

This had me on the edge of my seat. Stunning drama! Hugh Laurie was Exec Producer too and was instrumental is bringing it to the screen. He is such a versatile actor. I shall have to watch Blackadder Three to stop myself getting nightmares about him.

bakeoffcake · 28/03/2016 12:20

I agree that Hiddles' acting is a little one dimensional. I thought that about Jed too.

I don't think he'd make a great JB. Not menacing enough. Grin

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/03/2016 12:54

Re. the money: I assume it would be somehow commandeered and put wherever other ill-gotten gains and proceeds from crime go - but there was no indication that this would happen, so maybe Pine does keep the cash. But if he's such an honourable character, surely he wouldn't want it? And if Jed hated Roper and what he did so much she wouldn't want the proceeds of his heinous activities?

CheeseGerm · 28/03/2016 12:59

Roper is making Stuart Little waaaaay more tense than it should be!

CaveMum · 28/03/2016 14:24

Ireallydontseewhy I assumed the certificate hat Dromgoole's signature or something on it, signing it off as an MOD consignment and therefore imp,I aging himself in the whole shebang,

witsender · 28/03/2016 16:04

The more I think about it the more unsatisfying that ending was. Too neat, too 'BBC mini series' for a LeCarre. Hiddles was pretty but shallow...no depth, no development of character, completely unbelievable as a bad guy, ridiculously gallant relationships with one night stands etc.

Enjoyable watching as a program, but just a bit shallow. Hugh Laurie, Tom Hollander and Jed's hair were the best bits for me.

NeverEverAnythingEver · 28/03/2016 17:33

I'd keep £300m, ill-gotten or otherwise. Easter Wink

Ireallydontseewhy · 28/03/2016 17:43

Thanks cavemum! I went back and had another look - couldn't see an obvious dromgoole signature but maybe it was illegible! Also though didn't dromgoole manage the previous time to produce some fake authorisation, so it's odd that this certificate was going to destroy him? Still, whatever it was, it worked....

Madbengalmum · 28/03/2016 19:20

How did Burr manage to get a flight to eygpt when she was so pregnant?

lorelei9here · 28/03/2016 19:26

I expect it was private - but I've seen more heavily pregnant women on planes. I spent a whole transatlantic flight next to one wondering how much hot water we could get from the kitchen...

Madbengalmum · 28/03/2016 19:30

Ahhh, i see, thanks lorelei!

lavenderhoney · 28/03/2016 19:37

Roper would wriggle his way out as would sandy. Money talks, they have plenty of leverage and they'd be sipping martinis as the private jet whizzed them off somewhere a few hours later.

Pine would spend the rest of his days working in a hotel again, jed would keep in touch but find herself a new v rich squeeze and just have an ea with pine, because much as she likes him, she likes money more.

The book is way better. I wish they'd make a film of " the unknown solder" by le Carre - that is just as fiddly and sinister:)

HermioneWeasley · 28/03/2016 19:41

I loved that Angela got to confront him at the end! It wasn't at all realistic but it was very satisfying

NeverEverAnythingEver · 28/03/2016 19:51

( What's hot water for when women are having babies? I've wondered that since I watched Gone with the Wind when I was little, and having had two babies I still don't know... > )

NecklessMumster · 28/03/2016 19:54

I actually had a nightmare last night after watching this...I was in Ropers clutches!

NeverEverAnythingEver · 28/03/2016 21:10

Over on itv now it's blackadder messing with our heads, after the prince regent. Grin

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 28/03/2016 21:25

NeverEverAnythingEver · 28/03/2016 21:34
