I'm not familiar with the story, but the trailers for it look awesome.

I can't see anything with both Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in, as well as Olivia Colman being bad, can you?

Gypsy "Ok , when he hugged Burr he was less bland"

ah, see, I knew it wasn't just me having a sentimental moment.

Tom Hollander was brilliant, I was really sorry when Corky died because of it!

Trills · 27/03/2016 22:56

I am not feeling very convinced with the ending.

Pine and Jed don't know each other.

They should not "get together".

And Burr is STILL PREGNANT.

Thethingswedoforlove · 27/03/2016 23:00

Jed and pine won't stay together is my opinion. I think he rescued her coz he let Sophie down.....

Trills · 27/03/2016 23:02

They absolutely will not.

wowfudge · 27/03/2016 23:03

That was the most tense thing I have watched in ages. Really, really good drama. No need to have a second series: why not just enjoy it as a stand alone drama series?

Pantah630 · 27/03/2016 23:05

Roper knew something was up as there was no package at reception, he changed the safe code to catch her, and Pine, out.

Brilliant programme, need to read the book now, have really enjoyed it. Great acting all round, especially Tom Hollander and Olivia Coleman, loved Corky.

BossWitch · 27/03/2016 23:06

Yeah I'm hoping they just leave it as a one off, I feel like a second series would ruin it.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/03/2016 23:08

I enjoyed it but did think the final episode went rather too smoothly. Everything went off without a hitch, and parts where I thought the game must be up (like Burr's leaving the curtain covering the safe open and Pine's wet clothes) were conveniently ignored.
Still, don't know what I'll do on Sunday nights now!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/03/2016 00:05

It's very hot in Cairo even at night and his trousers were very expensive cotton and probably dried very quickly. Confused

So did he get to keep the £300m that he moved from the account then?

BossWitch · 28/03/2016 00:17

I'm willing to allow that his trousers may have dried, but the shoes?!

Surely he is too moral to have kept the £? Since a lot of his motivation was about a deep sense of right and wrong, it would seem out of keeping with his character development for him to pocket money created off the back of a lot of suffering.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 28/03/2016 00:24

Yes that was a£300m hole in the plot, for me.
And why did Burr only shoot the henchman in the leg, being all proper and doing the right thing, then laugh as Roper was driven off to be on the receiving end of rough justice?

MissBattleaxe · 28/03/2016 00:34

But if he didn't have the 300m either Roper or evil arms dealers would have it.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/03/2016 00:35

I said to Dh I wouldn't have shot him in the leg, I'd have popped him straight in the head so he couldn't bloody well get up again. No mercy, me.

BossWitch · 28/03/2016 00:37

I guess because killing someone yourself is harder than standing back and failing to stop someone else doing it? That bit is OK by me. What I have just remembered is the bit near the start, in the committee meeting when they were questioning Burr, and Burr points out that it was Rex (?) who signed off the authorisation for the raid, not her. The woman running the committee responded with something along the lines of "yes, on his last day". Love that! In a highly sensitive political role? Held accountable for the decisions which affect the lives of people around the world? Yeah, but fuck it, it's my last day!

Given that le carre worked in these circles, I'd love to think that is really how it happens!

Drinksforeveryone · 28/03/2016 08:53

Great ending.

I was scared to watch in case it got too grisly.

Gripping story all along.

fussychica · 28/03/2016 09:06

Total hokum.

Panicmode1 · 28/03/2016 09:36

I am about half way through the book and it's SO much better. I really wish that there were more television programmes gave the audiences credit for having intelligence and actually wanting to think about things....the signposting of everything, just in case we haven't grasped something drives me potty!

Tom Hiddleston looks nice but has the acting range of a piece of fruit - Olivia Colman, Hugh Laurie, Tom Hollander made the series for me. I can't imagine watching a second series though!

recyclingbag · 28/03/2016 10:08

Have only just found this thread but slightly bereft that it's ended.

I can buy the suit drying. It's Egypt, it's a very dry climate and could still have been a bit damp without anyone noticing.

Can someone explain the safe thing though. Why did Olivia Colman need to take the papers away?

Surely she could have photographed them or concealed one of those portable scanners in that massive bag.

TheSpottedZebra · 28/03/2016 10:18

But the suit remained perfectly pressed! That would not have happened.

recyclingbag · 28/03/2016 10:22

Yes you're probably right.

Also, I know it's immaterial by the time he was discovered, but I'm not sure I would have drowned him in his suit either. Far more convincing that he got undressed and 'decided to go for a swim'

Ireallydontseewhy · 28/03/2016 10:26

Recycling i think oc needed to give tom hiddlestone the papers so that he could show them to the guard, in order to get his van into the base where the trucks were. He needed the original to look realistic. That was what he picked up from reception.

Does anyone know why that certificate was enough to 'bust' dromgoole - why did that make him agree not to take roper's calls?

And, won't roper now say to the clients - it's jonathan you need if you want the money back - i think he'd better go on witness protection immediately!

jellycake · 28/03/2016 10:35

he needed the papers to get into the base and rig the trucks with the bombs. I guess a photocopy wouldn't do.

lorelei9here · 28/03/2016 10:44

Sho "And why did Burr only shoot the henchman in the leg, being all proper and doing the right thing, then laugh as Roper was driven off to be on the receiving end of rough justice?"

I thought the Burr mission was to bring them all to justice so she shot him in the leg to make sure he could face charges. One thing's got nothing to do with the other?

Also Roper being on the end of rough justice isn't the same as if she'd killed someone. He'll get roughed up, sure, but they want their money back so I imagine they won't kill him.

Re the trousers, I am a bit confused. When did we first see him after the killing? Did he have time to get changed?

ChippyMinton · 28/03/2016 10:48

Confused about the henchmen - one was arrested at the end and was walked out to the police vans. Was it the other one that OC shot in the leg?

NeverEverAnythingEver · 28/03/2016 10:49

The swimming pool thing - I would have just drowned him on the edge. He was drugged up to his eyeballs, slipped and drown himself. No wet feet needed. Easter Wink
