Not even a hint of a whisper of a spoiler please - we're going with UK time, so Sunday night.

Christmas is feeling like a minor interruption on the road to the season finale. I want it over with so we're closer to seeing just how sensible Carrie was when she went alone down a sarin-loaded train tunnel, and the total number of injuries Quinn can sustain in a single season. I predict he'll leave hospital and there will be some freak injury involving currywurst.

They could have taken her back to Berlin, humiliated her & interrogated her, confiscated her heels & made her wear shapeless clothes & foul shoes with velcro straps. Shredded her handbags. Ran loops of videos of Banana Joe's Bar day & night ...

Then just as she believed her sentence back in the USA would be reduced as she'd given them lots of intel, pushed her off platform whatevernumber it was into the path of an oncoming train.

Yes agree about Saul's motivation- definitely his wounded masculine pride influencing him.
Agree the Saul -Ivan conversation had shades of Smiley and Haydon and also Smiley and Karla - specially given the Berlin setting.

TheOldestCat · 03/01/2016 19:53

Oh Fiderer, my fave thing ever: 'Jackson Hole is where, in The West Wing, President Bartlet rode Leo's bike into a tree. Or as Leo put it "came to a sudden arboreal stop."'

Thanks for reminding me - had no idea it was the same place. Grin

Namechanger2015 · 03/01/2016 20:00

Are we now morphing into a Deutschland 83 thread?

Can I confess that I am only planning to watch it if I can natter to you lot about it afterwards?

Cocolepew · 03/01/2016 20:07

No I am too Grin

Whycantweallgetalong · 03/01/2016 20:10

I haven't read the whole thread, but desperately want Carrie and Quinn to get it together. All that male hotness CANNOT go to waste. Do they?

Hassled · 03/01/2016 20:18

I'm up for Deutschland 83 - DS3 says as long as they talk a lot about directions to places, pets and hobbies then he can help on the translation front if I inadvertently look away. I told him pets and hobbies were pretty much all the Cold War spies talked about, so we should be good.

Fiderer - I love you even more now you've managed to get West Wing and Le Carre references into a single post on a Homeland thread :o

Gosh, Hassled Blush

GypsyFl0ss · 03/01/2016 20:55

Grin Fiderer nothing beats WW!

I'd like to be watching but I'm in bed so I'll catch up tomorrow and see what you all think of our new Sunday night viewing.

Cocolepew · 03/01/2016 20:59

I'm reporting for duty .
I used to live in Germany when I was 8 and went to a military school I'll probably not need the subtitles.

Cocolepew · 03/01/2016 21:11

Nope. Need the subtitles.

butteredbarmbrack · 03/01/2016 21:22

I spent a year in Germany as a student but they're speaking too fast for me to catch everything without the subtitles! Maybe we'll tune in better after a couple of episodes, coco, or they'll get to the bit about pets and directions to the train station and we can all catch up alongside Hassled and her DH......

Fiderer · 03/01/2016 21:31

I've only been back in Germany since last night. Wasn't planning on watching D83 but cannot abandon my fellow Homeland posters.

Will catch up in the morning.

Cocolepew · 03/01/2016 21:33

I'm pretty much bilingual when it comes to swearing..

Fiderer · 03/01/2016 21:39

My 3 are bilingual but only swear in English. It has a better range apparently Hmm

Cocolepew · 03/01/2016 22:03

I quite enjoyed that, particularly Lenoras perm and ployester dresses.

Hassled · 03/01/2016 22:12

I liked that a lot - was horribly tense at times. I reckon Martin will fall for Yvonne the Wannabee Soul Singing Sister and forget all about Annet. Could you even have just picked up the phone and called East Germany in those days? It seems unlikely. And would he not have had an East German accent?

Not nearly enough requests for directions to the train station or accounts of how many cats people have though.

Namechanger2015 · 03/01/2016 22:14

Hmmm.. Got distracted from watching the subtitles and wandered off to do something else. Made me realise how little I actually look at the screen when I am 'watching' tv. Will try again tomorrow night.....

Cocolepew · 03/01/2016 22:21

Probably making it easy for us for the first eposide Hassled. I predict the next few episodes will feature lots of cats trying to catch a train to Berlin.

Hassled · 03/01/2016 22:22

:o

GypsyFl0ss · 04/01/2016 20:43

I haven't been able to find it on catchup on the TV but I have managed to set it to record for next Sunday. I know fuck all german but hey they're suggesting that we all learn a new language in 2016! Given it's taken me 10 years to have a decent smattering of portuguese I'm not holding out much hope to be alive by the time I grasp German Grin

Fiderer · 05/01/2016 11:45

Didn't expect to enjoy that half as much as I did. Good pace, era v nostalgic. Nice change from digital tracking, drone killings & jihadis with sarin gas.

Blimey though, the nostalgia. I was in and out of East Europe & the Soviet Union studying and working from 86 - 91. Shame I didn't learn German then but didn't know I'd end up living here. Berlin was a transit point & oasis of food and drink - the scene in the supermarket was v true.

Buying western coffee and cigarettes with hard currency to bribe hard-nosed receptionists and officials.

S2 wandered past as I was watching & said "Good Lord Mum, what are you watching in German?" Haven't for the last 10 years. When I gave him a brief explanation he was Shock literally open-mouthed. Don't think they learn about East/West in school at all. Ancient history Hmm

Stuffofawesome · 05/01/2016 11:52

I'm all in for this. Distracted by stylish lamps and furniture.

MuddlingMackem · 05/01/2016 14:56

Literally just watched it on Sky+. Enjoyed it, very tense in places.

Only ever did two years of German at school, back at the time this was set actually ('82-'84) come to think of it, but it seems I can pick out the odd word. Grin

I, too, thought it odd he could dial East Germany direct.

Anyone else think the end title music is very reminiscent of 'Spiral'/Engranges? Grin And then there was the trailer for a French political drama, Spin, on More 4 on Fridays. So I've set the Sky+ to record that too. :)
