anyone else looking forward to the 3rd series? has been a great run up to Christmas for the past couple of years!

OP posts:

I agree it's lost the feel good factor it had at the beginning and has turned into East Enders, has the Archers scriptwriter taken over or something? That has become stupidly complex and dysfunctional as well. It all went tits up when they killed off Nigel.

Icimoi · 27/01/2015 22:50

Who was the bloke in the supermarket? He wasn't Gillian's ex toy boy, was he?

ZeroFunDame · 27/01/2015 23:11

No, this was a new ex.

I just love the look on her face every time she meets another man. It's so comical. You see all her plans for a perfect life flying out of the window. Grin

SoupDragon · 28/01/2015 07:29

I am astonished that so many people "don't like" Nichola Walker's portrayal of "Gillian" - I think sometimes people forget that these people are acting I think NW is a truly fab actor and I do sometimes forget she's acting!

I think the problem is that her acting always includes the same slightly shifty look as if she is avoiding eye contact (I've only seen her in this, Spooks and I think one other thing)

I'm not sure why you think the fact that some people don't like an actor's style means they've forgotten the actor is acting. It also doesn't mean the actor isn't good.

NanaNina · 28/01/2015 11:22

Apologies for my post - (part of which has been copied in the above post) I didn't phrase it very well and my comment about people forgetting these people are acting was because so many people just talked about the character, rather than the actor, but I can see on re-reading it, that I came across as a bit arrogant so sorry!

SoupDragon · 28/01/2015 11:25

I didn't think it was arrogant, I just didn't get it :)

SpanishFly · 28/01/2015 13:05

Ditto - I didnt get the point you were trying to make, thats all Grin

GatoradeMeBitch · 29/01/2015 20:36

I love Gillian too, she's my favourite character. She has 'something' (and I don't mean something she caught from one of her gentleman callers), she always has my attention during her scenes. The promiscuity is linked with her insecurity. I wonder what it will take to make her feel secure though.

By the way - she definitely DID murder her husband. She told Caroline when they were drunk. She didn't 'help him' die, she cracked him on the head with the log splitter herself, it wasn't suicide.

Also, Gillian says in series one (I've been binge watching so it's all fresh in my mind) that the farm is hers, it's nothing to do with her dad Alan. She said she always wanted to be a farmer, so she and her ex bought the place.

I haven't enjoyed Series 3 as much as the first two. There hasn't been much to enjoy about it! I hate that they killed off Kate. It was just so predictable - a nice person, lesbian, her only dream is to be a mother - of course she had to die, ooh so tragic! I also hate it when they keep the 'dead person' around in someones imagination. If you don't want to let the actor go, you shouldn't have bumped their character off. I think it shows a lack of confidence in the plot.

I really hope Series 4 goes back to the brilliance of the first series. But the way things are going we may be in for plane crashes and alien invasions. (But as long as they take mardybum Celia away with them I can live with that.)

ZeroFunDame · 29/01/2015 20:54

Series Four?

Goodness. That's going to be convoluted. Is it official?

GatoradeMeBitch · 29/01/2015 21:33

Oh, I don't know actually. I just assumed. Perhaps there won't be another one and that's why this series is so busy - they're having to stuff several series' of ideas into one! Grin

ZeroFunDame · 01/02/2015 17:01

Oh - it's Sunday!

Only just noticed.

flipchart · 01/02/2015 21:48

It's just to mad.

flipchart · 01/02/2015 21:56

I think it's odd that Gillian hasn't got any female friends. Indeed she has no obvious friends.

GatoradeMeBitch · 01/02/2015 22:21

Hmm. That all felt a bit anti-climactic. I'm surprised they chose the finale for the 'nothing much happens' episode. And it was Alan's turn to be an unreasonable arse. I can hardly bear Alan and Celia now.

And why was Kate killed off? So that Caroline's ex has an excuse to hang around a bit (he would have found another excuse) and so we can find out that Flora's Dad is nice?

MajesticWhine · 01/02/2015 22:27

I didn't really enjoy that. An hour of my life I will not get back. She shouldn't have married him, but I guess in real life people go through with marriages they know they shouldn't.

Icimoi · 01/02/2015 22:47

They're setting up for another series. Which will mostly revolve around the issue of when Gillian is going to break and Confess All, and how seen she'll get that divorce.

Izzy24 · 01/02/2015 22:51

Well I enjoyed it. Apart from having to replay when DH rustled paper during indistinct dialogue several times.

I think Gillian is excellent . I do keep expecting her to say 'my precious ' tho ......

pinkfrocks · 01/02/2015 23:05

I still find Gillian annoying. I hate the way she mumbles a lot of the time and avoids eye contact - such as when she was in the pub with John pre-fumble. I think she comes over as mentally deranged. I don't know if this is how the writer / director wants her to play it or if it's her way of acting because she mumbled and was similar in Spooks.

I am finding Sarah Lancashire annoying now because she is so 'reasonable' all the time and speaks in that quiet yet patronising tone. And God knows how she does her job as a Head with all this going on.

The last episode was a farce and I think they over did it- being sick during the wedding etc.

I like Celia the best- I know she is prejudiced and not PC but to be honest she's the only sane one there.

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/02/2015 23:08

I enjoyed it too.

Tis only a bit of fun. And the scenery is fab.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/02/2015 23:50

I enjoyed it, was nice to have an episode with not too many things going on for a change. I'm not surprised Gillian is so messed up with having had so many years of abuse from Eddie. As for her not having friends, she may well have lost all her childhood friends during her marriage and then found it hard to develop lasting friendships in the same way as she's struggled with romantic/sexual relationships. Running a farm, working in a supermarket and bringing up her son couldn't have left much free time either.

Could have done without Robbie being sick though.

SoupDragon · 02/02/2015 07:11

I agree - Gillian may not have many friends as she was isolated when Eddie was abusing her.

She makes me laugh though - she looked so embarrassed and sheepish when recounting all the reasons she couldn't marry Robbie.

I agree that Robbie throwing up at the ceremony was totally unnecessary and added nothing to the episode.

Ilovereadingbooks · 02/02/2015 10:10

The wedding cost 10k, yet they didn't splash out on a weddingcar for Gill and her dad? I know it was just a plot device to hold things up etc etc, but for so much money it all seemed a really boring do, not even any speeches!!
I thinks she made the wrong decision, the whole Eddie thing will always be there and I think she will still sleep around and have affairs too. Not judging her, but by getting married to 'flu' ridden Robbie will not sort out her head! Cecila was funny getting the measure of that young bloke straight away 'in what capacity do you know Gillian?' - priceless. nice to see Alan having a pissed off side to him and I feel sorry for Gary's wife too - splashing out thousands on strangers would upset me too If I am honest, he isn't even 100 percent Alan is his dad.. oh well, if there is a another series I hope they liven it up a bit ( not sure how though?)

girliefriend · 02/02/2015 10:19

I don't get why they killed off Kate Confused it lost a lot of credibility after that, it was just so unlikely.

SoupDragon · 02/02/2015 11:02

for so much money it all seemed a really boring do, not even any speeches!

Also, the ceremony was really short and I'm not convinced Robbie said his vows...

Or they might have edited it somewhat :o

Not having a wedding car was odd though.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/02/2015 11:13

I liked Gillian's dress.
