The New Doctor?

Or just the trailer for the 50th anniversary episode?

Or something else entirely?

She did mrs jay!

mrsjay · 05/08/2013 09:33

Why the angst about accents?

no angst just chatting bogey

FadedSapphire · 05/08/2013 09:36

I think an older doctor will be great. Have enjoyed younger ones but now time for a bit of gravitas. Also pleased that the doctor is older than me!

SoupDragon · 05/08/2013 09:38

I could hear the Scottish in his accent when I knew it was there and was listening for it but not before. It was only when they had the letter from him aged "15 from Glasgow" that I twigged he was from Scotland. Hadn't given his "origin" any thought at all before then.

mrsjay · 05/08/2013 09:40

She did mrs jay!

Aww I can see the resemblence (sp) sort of

FreedomOfTheTess · 05/08/2013 09:42

I think there's something rather attractive about Peter Capaldi.

Pan · 05/08/2013 09:42

Yes people change their accents as parts demand. It's called..um...acting?

Expat's outburst indicates a belief that people shouldn't act when being actors. Or change clothes for example.Grin. And if they do they are sell-outs. Really?

mrsjay · 05/08/2013 09:43

IS clara staying or did her getting blown into the time thingy mean she wont be back ? least if clara is with him there wont be any of that will they wont they romance nonsense

SoupDragon · 05/08/2013 09:45

I think Nicholas Briggs puts on a different accent when filming Doctor Who too.

SoupDragon · 05/08/2013 09:46

The doctor retrieved Clara.

mrsjay · 05/08/2013 09:47

Oh yes so he did I forgot

AnneEyhtMeyer · 05/08/2013 09:53

I think he is a good choice - MS was hopeless at acting.

However, I think the real worry is that Moffat is still in charge. He has over-extended himself and the storylines and scripts have suffered. I think they need someone new, with proper writing experience and talent to take the helm. Unless they do that Dr Who will continue to be unwatchable whoever plays the Doctor.

mrsjay · 05/08/2013 10:00

I liked MS but hated the last series it was just rubbish

SoupDragon · 05/08/2013 10:03

I think the last series was "rubbish" because it has been so bitty. They should have shown it all at once like a normal series.

mrsjay · 05/08/2013 10:04

I think so it was off for too long and I just couldnt get into it,

BalloonSlayer · 05/08/2013 10:05

Very pleased it is Peter Capaldi. I also got an inkling when I saw his hand.

Although I did say earlier in the thread it wouldn't be him as he is too well-known. AND I said to DH earlier yesterday that they wouldn't cast him because all the little 8 and 9 year old fans would be looking him up on YouTube to see what else he has done, and running into the playground in September shouting "Ah'm the new Docterrrrr . . . you shower of CUNTS" etc

Pan · 05/08/2013 10:06

Anne - do you mean the plots have become overly twisted and incomprehensible? If so I'd agree. It becomes a bit difficult to attach to a plot when anything and everything can suddenly blow your understanding sky high, over a detail that you couldn't possibly have known before. I followed the early parts of the first Amy Pond series, but then became uncoupled from it.

RustyBear · 05/08/2013 10:17

Not entirely sure where you get the idea that Moffatt doesn't have 'proper writing experience and talent'. Have you never seen Blink,to name just one of Moffat's episodes?

I think the problem with the last series wasn't Moffat's writing, it was his script editing. Only the first and last episodes of each section of the main 7th series were written by Moffat and they were fine, but I suspect that Moffat isn't keeping such a firm hand on other people's writing as RTD used to. RTD frequently rewrote other people's scripts, in some cases radically - in fact he has said that the only writer he didn't rewrite to some extent was Moffat.

Moffat is/was a/the Sherlock writer as well.

Would still like the plots to be 'realistic'. Within the bounds of time travel of course.Grin

Fiderer · 05/08/2013 10:33

Well that cheered me up. Landed back in forrin land last night after a wonderful 2 weeks in the UK and was all glum and deflated.

Agree with hopefully any end to daft mooning. Tension yes, but FidGirl & I watched the 1st Martha episode late last night "Jedoon on the Moon" and it struck me that the Doctor took to her because she was clever and brave. The mooning came after the genetic transfer kiss and weakened the Martha series imo.

teejwood · 05/08/2013 10:58

Balloon that's exactly what I had said to DH re Capaldi being cast - the kids would all be on YouTube looking him up and getting versed in Tucker-isms - yikes!!

Some people hate DT for not being Sean Connery and acting every part in the same accent. I know which actor I would rather watch. Anyone expecting Capaldi to deliver the Doctor in a thick Glasgow accent is likely to be disappointed, too. The US market even struggled with Amy iirc. And I say that as someone who has a non-English accent!!!

2rebecca · 05/08/2013 11:00

Agree re recent plots. they have tried to fit too much plot into too short a time and made the plots too complex so everything is sorted out at the last minute with a jargon filled incomprehensible explanation. They need to either have 2 or 3 episodes per storyline or simplify the plots.

2rebecca · 05/08/2013 11:02

I also think there has been too much relience on understanding previous episodes to understand the current one. it's becoming more like the Archers than a kids sci fi series.

teejwood · 05/08/2013 11:06

Re Moffat - imho in Who he has very ambitious ideas for the storylines but realistically they would need double or triple the air time to flesh them out properly. So instead he jams in as much as possible and the result ends up disjointed or rushed. Also, too much snogging - it's Doctor Who not Coupling ffs.

Moffat is a great writer, but I think RTD was more disciplined about editing his episodes/arcs.

Re Martha - I always think of that as a poor series, but in reality it has some of my favourite ever Who episodes (Blink, Family of Blood 2-parter). So it really was the unrequited love gak that put me off.
