The New Doctor?

Or just the trailer for the 50th anniversary episode?

Or something else entirely?

Dh is adamant it will be Roy Kinnear.
I liked guessing from the clues last time but the game was spoilt by being a vaguely unknown. I wanted Russell Tovey.

Who are guesses at the moment?

Apart from Chris O'Dowd, I've heard that Peter Capaldi is a favourite too.

There was a story yesterday that betting had increased on Peter Capaldi. He'd be ace! Not as the sweary character from The Thick of It, but he was superb in The Hour.

alpha I just googled Roy Kinnear and got very confused! Confused
Dh thinks it'll be Rory Kinnear. :)

I would squee with fan girl excitement of it was Nathan Fillion but I know that is rather unlikely.

I'm not sure about Peter Capaldi. The doctor has a certain warmth and I can't shake Malcolm Tucker from my mind!

Peter Capaldi was in a series of Torchwood - Children of Earth, was it called? Think I've blocked it as it really really upset me! Anyway, he was excellent in that (very warm and morally torn and tortured) and that also gives him a Who-ish connection - though would a big previous role in Torchwood write him off as a possible Doctor??

Hmm, suddenly wishing I had a TV license, just to watch this on Sunday.

Ooh! I'd forgotten about the Capaldi/Torchwood link! He was really good in that.

Hasn't Peter Capaldi already been in Doctor Who? Wasn't he a Roman in the one about Pompei?

Rory Kinnear is already filming something next month (Lucan miniseries for ITV), which is right when the Christmas Special is filmed so chances are it's not him. I'd quite like it though, he's a good actor. Capaldi would be absolutely lush, but he's not only been in Torchwood, but he's already been in Who too (Fires of Pompeii).

Yes, he was in The Fires of Pompeii. But Colin Baker was in it as a Panopticon guard before he became the Doctor so it's not a complete no-no.

Freema Agyaman was in a previous episode before becoming a companion.

Eve Myles was a Welsh housemaid called Gwyneth in the Dickens / Zombie apocalypse episode (Ecclestone series) before being cast in Torchwood as Gwen. Imaginative names for a Welsh girl eh?

Being in Dr Who before doesn't stop someone being a main character.

ReadytoOrderSir · 02/08/2013 10:33

Karen Gillan was in Fires of Pompeii too.

Freema Agyeman was a minor character in the one with the Daleks in Canary Wharf.

I would love to see a peter Capaldi in the role, been a fan of his ever since Local Hero back n about 1982. I think he is an amazing actor.

Others I wouldn't mind seeing are:

Michael Sheen (was in Twilight...I know, I know) amazing actor, Welsh too but suspect he is tied to the US. Got a feeling he has a child over there who he remains in lots of contact with so guessing long periods n the UK are out of the question.

Rupert Grint is being speculated on as well....don't know if this is a giggle or if he is truly in the running, funnily enough I think he would do a great job.

All the talk of magic and whodini (!) made me consider "Paul Daniels and the lovely Debbie McGee" Grin. - somehow I suspect NOT!

Nathan Fillion

I really enjoyed Matt Smith in the role, he had a tough act to follow but I think he did well.

IIRC, Freema was retconned as being the cousin of the original character she played, and similar with Eve Myles (Gwen was a distant relative of Gwyneth) Companions are different from the Doctor, things can get handwaved and explained. Colin Baker was a different era, less scrutiny of previous episodes (because of the lack of Youtube and the internet, DVDs or even videos at that time) I think recycling someone as the Doctor would be more problematical now, but obviously that doesn't mean they won't Smile
